Trimming the squad

209

Trimming the squad is maybe not the most important part of the transfer window but it is the easiest.  Following the permanent departure of Sead Haksabanovic to Malmo, Marco Tilio (22) returns to Melbourne City for a year-long loan.

Malmo and Melbourne have managed to get work done early in the window, but only for players regarded surplus to requirements at their club.  Suitors for wanted players, like Matt O’Riley, have not been able to move the dial.

Celtic are the only Premiership club yet to make a signing, but the players every other club have brought in fall into the Tilio/Haksabanovic category; signed without serious competition to a man.  If you want a player to enhance the champions next season, you need to be prepared to work in a different market environment.

Adam Idah falls between stools.  His perceived value at Celtic is probably higher than anywhere else, given he was an unqualified success here, but was a bit-part player at a club in the English Championship.  Suitors there will mark his value down.  Celtic need a serious option to Adam to get Norwich moving earlier than they absolutely need to.

  1. In: None.

Out: Sead Haksabanovic, forward (Malmo, undisclosed); Joe Hart, goalkeeper (retired); Magnus Mackenzie, defender (Queen’s Park); Benny-Jackson Luyeye, midfielder.

Loan ended: Adam Idah, forward (Norwich City); Paulo Bernardo, midfielder (Benfica).

Loan out: Marco Tilio, forward (Melbourne City, loan extension).

  2. 7 less than we had a seasons end, several others will now find out if they are going to be retained or not.

Hopefully we trim the squad by moving on a few players who have been tried and found wanting numerous times over the last four years rather than players who haven’t had a real chance.

  4. GGHS

who would you class as never having had a chance ?

I personally believe a lot of players have let themselves down by not forcing themselves into the managers plans when they have got on the pitch.

They often disappoint or make very little controbution.

Haksa falls into that category ofr me, two games at hampden v the huns, chances on goal he bottled it or made wrong choices.

Tillo is different, the bhoy just permanently injured,

once again though in a new narrative he was “not in rodgers” plans, well how could an injured player be in the plans.

that is the current narrative, trying to make rodgers somehow culpable for players not making it at celtic. hmm

  5. Happy 4th all.

Election Day in the UK but few comments – I assume that’s apathy, driven by poor options (ie same over here).

  6. A 22 year old player is no longer regarded as a young player. Peak age is only 3 years away.

Good afternoon all from the Victoria Bar, Blackpool. Still blowing a gale on the Fylde Coast. 🙄

    StStivs

I would say that both of the centre halves who came in would fall into that category when compared with Stephen Welsh and the number of occasions he has played since getting his first opportunity in the first team.

I would also think that Yang , Iwata, Kwon, Holm haven’t had the same opportunity as people like Mikey Johnston, particularly considering that they are young guys who have been in this country less than a year.

I am of the opinion that Siegrist is a better goalkeeper than Bain, although I would be the first to admit that I am not sure what his issues are.

I just think that players who haven’t been able to make an imapact in four years aren’t likely to change now, particularly given three years coaching under Ange and Brendan.

I also feel that 24 or 25 is young for a player. My general feeling is that if they haven’t made the breakthrough by then, they aren’t likely to do so now.

    Just my thoughts though.

I would also let McCarthy go for our sake and his, does he even train?

    —–‐—

Doesn’t even make the squad photograph.

  12. Good to get some unsuccessful signings off the books. Hopefully, frees up resources for more appropriate incomers.

Difficult not to conclude it’s a sign of our poor transfer strategy of late.

Would like to have seen a nod to this within the article

  13. But surely if our signing policy of recent times was as successful as some would have us believe we would not need to jettison a whole cohort of players, from the hopeful to the hopeless.

Here’s an idea, why don’t we sign players who at least look like they have played the game before?

Or are we still singing to the Big Pete Beat?

  14. !!Bada Bing!! on

Actually forgot about McCarthy, got told over a year ago,he’s going nowhere, turns up for training, goes home, gets paid.

  15. BIGRAILROADBLUES, before you retired, we’re you pubspy?

  17. I got an Email this morning to advise me that my VIAPLAY Account is Cancelled, without any explanation ?

Was this because there is NO DOMESTIC Fitba at the moment….If NOT, I do not see any reason for them to Cancel as I always paid by Direct Debit each month, so I never missed any payments ?

    Has VIAPLAY gone BUST ?

I will try and contact them.

A few won’t succeed for every one who does.

Even they are not bad players and will succeed elsewhere.

Lagerb or Kwon or Yang or Oh or Haska or Barkas may not work for us but may well work elsewhere.

Yes that terrible policy which has seen us have the most successful 21 year period in our history by a country mile.

There is a need for churn every year and the fans expect it too. Nobody is happy with being offered the same show as last year.

Some players retire from the game- Hart, Mooy

Some players who were strong contributors are let go because they no longer are- Rogic

    Some promising players don’t fulfil their promise- Haksabanovic, Bernabei etc;

Some promising players need game time to bridge the gap to Celtic regular- Kwon, Tilio, Ajer, Lawal

Some players may have fallen out with the current manager- Giakoumakkis

Some players are not rated by this manager- Lagerbielke, Nawrocki- maybe Holm

Some players are not rated by the support- Mikey Johnston, James Forrest

Some leave for political reasons- Abada

And loads of youngsters every year- join lower league clubs in Scotland & England – Carse, Vata, Deas,

I don’t know any player we have signed who was useless. The closest we came was with Amido Balde who was still learning some basics of the game in his mid 20’s- even Danny McGrain couldn’t work that miracle
