Turnbull and the Euros

412

1998 was an era before the tier one clubs started to harvest vast numbers of players, so by some quirk of nature, Celtic had more players represented at the World Cup that year than any other club in the world.  11 in total left the newly crowned champions to travel to France: McNamara, Boyd, McKinlay, Burley, Jackson, Donnelly, Lambert, Gould, Rieper and Weighorst.

We were delighted for the players who took part in the tournament but it had consequences when practically an entire team missed out on a close season.  Legs tired in the spring of 1999.

It would be churlish for us to grudge James Forrest or Callum McGregor the chance to participate the Euros this summer.  They deserve it and will surely go.  David Turnbull is the one I am most keen on to stay home.  David will be a crucial player for Celtic next season and I want him fit and ready for the Champions League qualifiers.  Ryan Christie, in the final year of his contract, is likely to be around for at least a part of the qualification campaign but any late season tiredness is likely to someone else’s problem.

Excellent post mate I agree 100%, not got a bus pass yet though so I’ll vote Tory :-)

No they haven’t , and no they aren’t.

Someone somewhere is paying for them, either by paying more taxes, or by being denied goods and services they would otherwise have been entitled to.

And to save you wondering, the cult opted for the second option. Your ‘freebies’ are in effect being paid for those who can least afford it.

  3. The BBC online match report from last night leads with a photo of Roofe’s Bruce Lee kick.

In the report, Thomas Duncan says:

“Rangers were already down to 10 by then, Kemar Roofe having been sent off within six minutes of coming on for catching goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar in the face with his boot.”

    Catching????

Indeed and I believe it was Slavia who knocked Cluj out of the Champions League in the round after Cluj beat us – winning 1-0 home and away.

  5. The narrative is 100% on Kamara, and to move away completely from the actual football/result. The objective is clear = try and get the result null and voided. Hugely unlikely I’d say. Racism in ALL forms is despicable.

However, the very idea of Sevco adopting such a high handed position puts me in mind of the time ruthless mobster, Al Capone, chastised me for nicking a bar of chocolate. “That’s morally reprehensible”, he roared.

As to Roofe and the “no intent” brigade amongst the SMSM. He knew raising his boot 6 feet in the air carried risks but knowing the risks , went ahead and executed the act = reckless intent. No apology or concern expressed for the player at all.

  6. Ernie,

Please expand on your”Its the people who can least afford it who pay”.Another one of your convoluted answers.

Have you actually read that somewhere? The Sun’s back page is the Roofe ‘boot in the face’ incident, so not 100% on Kamara.

Aye us and happy to, even if theres has to be an increase in the taxes. Education Health the bottom line.

Remember the story, ‘They didn’t want us here, we couldn’t get jobs, so the route out was education!’

My father hated the SNP with a passion (no catholics need apply) but towards the end of his life, even he could see the only way out of westmonster gangsterism was independence by ANY MEANS!. Then we’ll decide who runs the country!

Were taxes raised to cover these measures?

You don’t live in Scotland and therefore you maybe don’t know the answer, so I’ll help you out. No they weren’t.

And if taxes weren’t raised to pay for them, spending had to be reallocated to pay for them.

Who lost out in that reallocation? The worst off and most in need.

    Who benefitted? Everyone else.

Populist pork barrel politics masquerading as progressive social justice. And people are daft enough to fall for it, because they’re quids in and having their egos stroked at the same time.

straight off denies racism- as our own BadaBing brilliantly pointed out they have been fighting racism since 9.45 last night 😊

straight off says what the player said – even tho the unsportsmanlike comment may bring some form of censure from uefa.

  11. Seems like forever since we played a game; hopefully we have been working on fitness/stamina in the meantime. I watched Man City the other night and their energy was outstanding – that doesn’t come from being a good player. Big priority for us next season is to be fit BEFORE we start playing games. The chasm in condition of our team in France last summer vs the huns was staggering. No more ‘it’s just games to get fit’ excuses please when fitter teams run over us.

We ‘should’ be in better shape on Sunday and if so, we should go for a 442 and get in the lead

    Problems –

who s the best second striker?

will we cross the ball or stick with cut backs?

I’d personally go with Griffiths for his early shooting ability as we won’t cross the ball in all likelyhood

Bain; Kenny Welsh Ajer Taylor(if fit); Christie Turnbull Soro McGregor; Griffiths Edouard

What is more likely to happen is a 4231 cautious approach to the hun 433

Bain; Kenny Welsh Ajer Taylor(if fit); Brown McGregor; Christie Turnbull Moi; Edouard

Either way, we have 5 subs so go for the jugular first half and get ahead this time and no cheap concessions. Bring on fresh legs from 60mins

Great pic….my mother and father (sadly gone) retired to Largs and had many a happy year. My Da’s local was a wee bar between the bus and the church steeple, called ‘Potters’, a dingy wee joint but he loved it. It’s still there. Sometimes me and the bros pop in for a pint to chat to some of his ol’ chinas.

I know you are not a Sevco apologist.

  25. Something doesn’t add up:

Police Scotland say they have received “no reports of criminality” from either club.

A spokesperson added: “Police Scotland has contacted club officials and assured them that should any allegation be received it will be investigated thoroughly.”

Why would they do that if ‘no re[ports of criminality’?

    or

In their statement, Slavia added that Kudela was reacting to one of the “brutal tackles” the team faced, citing a facial injury suffered by goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar that led to Kemar Roofe being sent off.

Rangers finished the game with nine men and Slavia have since confirmed that Kolar suffered a fracture to his face.

“Slavia players faced an unprecedentedly malicious play from their opponents. They have never experienced such play in any game they participated in the modern history of the European competitions,” read the statement.

“After the end of the game, the team was not allowed to enter the dressing room.

“Ondrej Kudela was assaulted by Kamara and hit with fists in the head with manager Steven Gerrard witnessing the incident,” the statement claimed.

“Even the Uefa representatives who were also present on the site of the incident were shocked by this behaviour.”

    or

A Uefa spokesperson said the governing body “is aware of an incident which occurred in the tunnel after the match and which involved some players of both teams.

“We are waiting to receive detailed reports of the match officials who were present at the game before commenting further.”

Uefa is also awaiting reports regarding the alleged racist abuse.
