Turnbull and the Euros

412

1998 was an era before the tier one clubs started to harvest vast numbers of players, so by some quirk of nature, Celtic had more players represented at the World Cup that year than any other club in the world.  11 in total left the newly crowned champions to travel to France: McNamara, Boyd, McKinlay, Burley, Jackson, Donnelly, Lambert, Gould, Rieper and Weighorst.

We were delighted for the players who took part in the tournament but it had consequences when practically an entire team missed out on a close season.  Legs tired in the spring of 1999.

It would be churlish for us to grudge James Forrest or Callum McGregor the chance to participate the Euros this summer.  They deserve it and will surely go.  David Turnbull is the one I am most keen on to stay home.  David will be a crucial player for Celtic next season and I want him fit and ready for the Champions League qualifiers.  Ryan Christie, in the final year of his contract, is likely to be around for at least a part of the qualification campaign but any late season tiredness is likely to someone else’s problem.

  1. Does anyone know why the Scottish Government is waiting until tomorrow to decide whether or not our game goes ahead on Sunday?

It seems too coincidental to me that Sevco play tonight and the announcement will be the day after.

If fireworks sammys turn up in numbers tonight it might force a decision from the gov.

Although I’m pretty sure it will go ahead…

  3. Was out in ML2 earlier visiting my mum there were huns hanging around wearing colours I assume they were heading to the den of shame.

Its hardly news to have huns hanging around in ML2 right enough.

  4. No matter how relatively poor we have been this season, we are still the team most likely to defeat the Huns. That is why I cannot rid myself of the feeling that the game will be cancelled.

As far as I know, Humza Yousaf, the Justice Secretary, would `decide`.

  6. Sorry if I’m misinterpreting you HS but it appears that you believe that the Justice Secretary will call off the game on Saturday on the grounds of safety ( I assume ) because he is worried that a team from which garners virtually no support would lose the match?

I’d definitely need a walk through on the logic of that.

How many on CQN want it to go ahead?

You can count me in. I want an opportunity to burst their bubble…and I hope Slavia stick it to them tonight…

  8. INCREDIBLE…but a very frustrating Day for me in so many ways…

There were SEVEN Races at Cheltenham Today and I had SIX WINNERS, but I just couldnt get any more than THREE on any one Line…..” Lucky 15 and Lucky 31″ Lines.

I am NOT a Heavy Punter, and also DESPITE having SIX Winners, I STILL couldnt get my Placepot or Quadpot UP either, as I was beaten on both those lines, by the same Horse NOT being Placed,

I was Correct this morning when I Posted that the very lovely Jockey Rachel Blackmore, could have at least another couple of Winners.

She did at Odds of 3/1 and 5/1. I had both horses at bigger Odds of.. 11/2 and 13/2.

My SIX Winners were… CHANTRY HOUSE @ 9/1, ALLAHO @ 9/2 and again 11/2.( Two separate lines), FLOORING PORTER @ 16/1 and 12/1 ( Two separate Lines), THE SHUNTER @ 7/2, TELEMESOMETHING GIRL @ 13/2 and finally MOUNT IDA @ 6/1 ( on two separate Lines).

The Winners above were all lower Prices Today, as I had taken EARLY Prices.

Ive managed to win just over a couple of HUNDRED Quid…but it SHOULD have been so much MORE , literally ” THOUSANDS” ?

But I didnt and thats my own Fault.

I will never have so many Winners on One Day at Cheltenham EVER again, so my chance of a MASSIVE Pay Out at Cheltenham is now gone I suppose…DOH !

I could EASILY have had 4 or 5 Winners on One Line, IF I had ” Mixed Up” my selections differently…..but sadly I didnt…..I am a CHUMP !

    HH.

  9. Does. It matter if Sunday’s game is on or not?

We have had enough self inflicted misery for one season.

I accept my feelings are without much in the way of logic !

My thinking is along the lines of The Establishment helping THEIR club as much as possible so, if they go through tonight, a wee rest would be beneficial.

Agreed, why should the huns be scared we’ve been garbage all season.

If I were a hun (I know) I’d want the game played, firstly they think they are much better than us and secondly they are desperate for Morelos to break his duck. Its a win win for them, only bad result for them is a heavy defeat and does anyone except the most one eyed Tim see that happening?

It will go ahead barring biblical weather events.

  12. HS, fair enough. If I were abused every time I was less than logical I’d be in trouble :-)

  13. Pumping tonight and a pumping Sunday would taste good and I’d love it, sadly it would be a very short term respite.

This is going to be a long summer I’m afraid.

I am not sure you are agreeing with what WBC said.

  15. I thought I was I want the game played and hoping with no real conviction that we pump them.

It would also allow me to get battered into the bevvy in the afternoon :-)

  16. We’re I approached to take the Celtic job I would seriously question how often, over twenty years, both as a player manager, NL was hung out to dry by DD and his acolytes.

Well, I am certainly in agreement with at least two parts of that !!

    Cheerio for now.

  18. Not sure you would be approached for the Celtic job Quonno.

    NL can look after himself.

Plenty of interest in the Celtic Job.

Who wouldn’t want to manage a magical club like ours? 🍀

  19. I imagine Celtic are busy in the background, they’ve set up business class type ST refunds due for unnused catering etc, due to the pandemic, no word on the plebs.

Next season there might be a game every week in Paradise, were they able to decide to incorporate the ‘B’ team for added ST value. Going to see ‘Celtic Reserves’ was for the die hard but it gave the original Greeting Brigade more scope for the players that never made it to the big Hoops. They were also able to berate those dropped from the first team, or trying to regain much forgotten ‘match fitness ‘ Another bonus was the Shamrock strip?

“Away ya mug, yer no even good enuff fur the reserves”

My senior Celtic friend recalls the time when as a very young Hoopster his old man said to him “there were two games they could go to on the Saturday “ Walk to Parkhead to see Celtic reserves or go an see the ‘wee Rainjurz ‘ in Cambuslang. Not surprisingly he chose the long walk, and has a ST to this day.

    A lifetime in Paradise CSC

Of course in common with thousands of others I would jump at the job,

But the questions still need asking and answering.

I had Allaho and Mount Ida, both early prices so better than SP’s, won on the day, onto tomorrow to skelp the bookies.
