Turnbull and the Euros

412

1998 was an era before the tier one clubs started to harvest vast numbers of players, so by some quirk of nature, Celtic had more players represented at the World Cup that year than any other club in the world.  11 in total left the newly crowned champions to travel to France: McNamara, Boyd, McKinlay, Burley, Jackson, Donnelly, Lambert, Gould, Rieper and Weighorst.

We were delighted for the players who took part in the tournament but it had consequences when practically an entire team missed out on a close season.  Legs tired in the spring of 1999.

It would be churlish for us to grudge James Forrest or Callum McGregor the chance to participate the Euros this summer.  They deserve it and will surely go.  David Turnbull is the one I am most keen on to stay home.  David will be a crucial player for Celtic next season and I want him fit and ready for the Champions League qualifiers.  Ryan Christie, in the final year of his contract, is likely to be around for at least a part of the qualification campaign but any late season tiredness is likely to someone else’s problem.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, most Celtic supporters are wondering when our players are gonna get fit enough for this season.

Much cringeworthy ego massaging of Alex McLeish on shortbread…

  6. Yeah but it’s a party political broadcast.

You save them up for this time of year.

  7. Go tell the Spartim on

I remember there was a healthy crowd in Dundee for a reserve game just to see Liam Brady line up in the hoops.

Some are saying that Celtic are indeed active behind the scenes, you mean like how they recruited NL?

It was quite interesting reading Derek Rae (there is indeed an eloquent Rae after all) on the German football model and how Celtic could follow it, though I suspect we won’t be anywhere near their model. Obv I can’t prejudge the new manager or whatever, but if I’m honest I’m expecting to be underwhelmed, I really have little faith in the plc.

  8. GO TELL THE SPARTIM

Listened last night to ss podcast, Derek Rae was talking to Gordon ? by phone and he sure came over well, very knowledgeable. You are right can’t see us fitting German model.

  9. watching the Arsenal game wondering how Olympiacos can have a better , more mobile and committed defense than we had going into a season chasing an unprecedented 10 in a row. Still furious that we never went into this season with 2-3 Almighty signings to demonstrate our intent.

Arrogance and ignorance of the unforgivable kind!

  10. How many penalties will the huns get tonight?

My bet is, as many as they need.

    Referees are bent.

I think luck has been more in evidence than bias in Europe. I expect Slavia Prague to qualify but I accept that desire might be influencing that expectation.

I think I’m expecting Clarke to be unveiled, whose not renowned for open expansive football, but that might be down to the tools at his disposal at the time, but principally given that they kept NL in position when they had opportunities to save the season (we may well have still failed to win the league) and they again will be deciding who gets the job (NL in the showers isn’t a nice image).

Personally I think we are along way from being as good as we could be, and have felt so for a while.

  14. To those who I criticized by saying Mourinho is an unrealistic target, I apologise.

He could be available tonight :/

  15. HOT SMOKED

I believe Dallas still has in fluence on referees in Europe.

Why do you think in Scotland the huns haven’t conceded a penalty or had a man sent of during a game or .been awarded a barrow load of penalties.

I believe the mibs do not wish to upset their masonic paymasters, lest it impact on the huge earnings.

  16. “Why do you think in Scotland the huns haven’t conceded a penalty or had a man sent of during a game or .been awarded a barrow load of penalties.”

Because the bias in Scotland is very much in favour of the Huns. I don`t think the same is true in Europe although I am sure Dallas would do what he could to help them if he could get away with it.

    Cheerio for now.

  17. BADABING

In 2014, was it deliberate misleading or another honest mistake when Brown, Darling and Brown assured us that best way to ensure a future in Europe was ro remain in the UK?

  18. My friends in Celtic,

Listen to Dave Cormack ( Aberdeen) getting interviewed on you tube.

He tells us that he has had quality applications from Scotland, England , Europe, USA and beyond. This is only the first week he tells us.

Now tell me why some of us set our bar so low.?

Think outside the box, aim for the best and see what happens. We must be inundated with quality applications outwith the usual suspects.
