TURNBULL TORMENT

DAVID TURNBULL welcomed back Brendan Rodgers to his second stint as Celtic manager by scoring the first goal of the 2023/24 Premiership season.

The cultured midfielder slotted away a penalty-kick against Ross County and added another before half-time as the hosts won 4-2 to get the ball rolling on what would become the club’s third successive title triumph.

That must seem a lifetime away for Turnbull who has just suffered relegation with Cardiff City after they plunged into the English League’s third-tier.

HAPPIER TIMES…David Turnbull celebrates a Celtic goal.

The 25-year-old Scotland international, who was signed by Neil Lennon from Motherwell for £3.25million in August 2019, won six major honours at Parkhead, but, with his contract running down, was sold to the Welsh club for £2million in late January 2024.

Turnbull hoped to relaunch his career in the English Championship, but the switch has turned into a nightmare.

Injury has blighted his stay at Cardiff and his long-term hamstring problem restricted him to just 18 appearances and a solitary goal in a season of misery for the club that was complete with their relegation at the weekend.

Turnbull is under contract until June 2027, but there must now be doubts about the gifted playmaker continuing his career in EFL League One.
