Turning under-performance into awesomeness

661

I’m reliably informed Legia will not ‘park the bus’ on Wednesday.  Instead, with a three goal lead, they have enough legroom to play their normal game, attempt to compete in the middle of the park, and expose holes at the back, as they did last week.  What’s more, they’re unsure they would be able to park the bus successfully for an extended period.

Set aside the debacle what was our defensive performance for a moment.  The period of last week’s match Ronny Deila should initially concern himself with is the opening 25 minutes, when Celtic largely bossed the game.  We then have to consider the 40 minutes we looked comfortable with 10 men; not an insignificant achievement away from home in Europe.

In short, Legia are a team which for large periods of the game we looked to have the measure of, despite the anomalies of playing a debutant, an inexperienced youth and with a left back who was left out.  We should do far better at Murrayfield.

Legia believe they are going through.  They unquestionably have the upper hand but the Celtic collapse in the final minutes, when we appeared to be too busy picking fights than sticking to plan, distorted the perceived difference between the teams.  Celtic didn’t just underachieve, they did so on an epic scale.  What Legia don’t know, is what a highly-functional Celtic team looks like.

We need to transform that epic failure into the kind of performance we are capable of in Europe.  The defence needs to find the form which broke so many records last season.  Ronny needs to find some of his awesomeness.

The reality is, despite last week’s debacle, we’re still in this tie – and should plan to go through.

We can forget being credible in Europe again unless and until there is a rebalancing of football economics from the big leagues. Never going to happen, too many powerful, selfish interests. As Lineker said today, football is rotten to the core. We’ll need to content ourselves with ten-in-a-row and the continuing miseries and preferably final demise of (imitation) THEM. A dire SPFL without even Hibs and Hearts, no CL, no Forster, Van Dijk, Matthews and possibly others is a tough watch for the faithful and a tough sell for PL and the Board. I love the EPL and Liga as much as the next guy, but it’s killing clubs like ours.

We may well not have won the double in the Centenary year were it not for Big Roy.

I remember a interview with the Maestro when he gushed , in the best possible way, about how big Roy’s desire to win had driven them on to win both the semis final and final of the Scottish cup in 90 minutes when lesser men would have settled for extra time.

His influence at Love street in1986 shouldn’t be underestimated either.

  12. Have to say I liked Big Roy as a player

Lost a lot of respect for him, when I read the story about him walking along a street dropping £20 notes , to annoy someone though, which he and a few other players thought hilarious ?

SFTB is well able to explain his post with regard to PL’S pay arrangements and probably already has, but the point he is making is not a defense of PL and the inability of posters to spot the difference between systemic, organisational or internal cultural differences that beset Celtic and the simplistic happy clapper/ mineshafter perspective that clings to PL as the source of all Celtic’s ills prevents examination of the point being made and is simply counter productive.

SFTB put his finger on exactly what makes Celtic less efficient as a business than it could be. Making sure good results are clearly defined in priority then rewarded

Where PL could be criticised is in not turning Celtic into a much more supporter responsive business than it has been but that does not mean he does not want to or is unaware of the need.

I got talking to Tony Hamilton a couple of years ago about a TV idea for the old and infirm. Over the couple of meetings Tony ‘ s attitude became less defensive as he realised I was not there to criticise but to contribute.

His defensiveness can be explained by the fact Celtic (in the year of Honest Mistakes) were under attack from the fans. When you attack folk they naturally become defensive.

There were good reasons why the TV idea could not be realised but over the meetings things became much more relaxed and I suggested to TH that metaphorically he should get out more.

At the time Twitter was just getting out its nest but first through Facebook then Twitter, Tony became much more accessible and so supporter responsive.

That change in behaviour is working it’s way through the club, the creation of the SLO post and the latest fact finding exercise to find out how supporters can feel they are appreciated is a sign of that change.

So can we maybe look at what we all can do to change the relationship between club and support by being positively responsive when Celtic try responding to us?

Sorry to address this to you D. You are a good man and a good Tim, but your post is an opportunity to get a general point across that we (custodians and support) are all in this together.

    Soooo….

We have a list of occasions which it is being argued that RA’s presence was a crucial factor in a Celtic victory

    In chronological order….

1986 at Love St. – a certain Maestro springs to mind

    1988 SF

1988 SCF – in both occasions the lesser men as described by TLWIO would have had the extra 30′ to win the game and not risked losing a game they’d had on both occasions had to work hard to equalise

1989 SCF – give you the stolen throwin but – as argued above – the vital factor that day was RA played at RM, Whyte & McCarthy played CB

I think people are picking me up wrong.

Roy Aitken was a fine servant of the club. However let’s not portray him as an all time great which he clearly wasn’t.

As a central defensive midfielder in his heyday he would be a welcome addition to the current side…..

I can’t work my way through the Celtic accounts, that’s your job, and they are there for people that can scrutinise them.

I don’t know either how we square ‘undisclosed transfer fees’, maybe it’s my ignorance being bliss but I’m pretty confident the money for the Victor Wanyama’s isn’t spirited away in the manner of Kenny Dalglish.

RD will spend as did MON, WGS, TM and NFL.

Whether it’s precise pound out, for pound in, is petty, and the overdraft, or loans facility can stay intact, whilst everything around Scottish football continues to shrink, Celtic prevail, as top dogs.

After Warsaw I’m much more concerned on how RD used or failed to, the resources he was left.

I’ll wait and see who he buys when he’s had time to prepare for the premature CL qualifiers, even as it may be after this years Europa attempt.

I spoke with some survivors of WW1 who had precisely that attitude. It was not unheard of but the guys I spoke to had the “lions led by donkeys” view of the conflict and hated Haig and the Poppy Fund. It was a small sample but their attitude was the same and they were not rebels.

My take on SFTB’s post was that he was pointing out that PL was deferring the bonus rather than giving it up. I am sure we all know that this means that this bonus will therefore be payable later when things are quiet or forgotten about.

Hardly a hardship or a grand gesture, I would suggest.

    Auldheid,

The creation of the Supporter Liaison Officer post is not indicative of a change of mindset within the club. It is a mandatory UEFA requirement.

If we did not appoint a SLO we would not be granted a licence to compete in UEFA competition so I cannot give the board any credit for appointing the SLO. It was not their idea and was not something they did of their own accord/ initiative.

Bada, our club have a bad history of taking advantage of the loyalty of players who were boyhood hoops fans then brought through the ranks and not paid the wages they should have been..

The treatment of Jimmy McGrory is one of worst instances of this., conning him about stopping off in London on the way to Lourdes then trying to flog him to Arsenal and tesbeing paid less than his team man. His quote ‘ McGrory of Arsenal doesn’t sound as good as McGrory of Celtic’ still fills me up with pride.

  27. the glorious balance sheet on

We need goals and plenty of them on Wednesday night.

The following players in our squad have scored in European competition before:-

    For Celtic:

Pukki – 2 (both v KR, CL qualifying)

van Dijk – 2 (both v KR, CL qualifying)

Stokes – 2 (both v Rennes in EL)

McGregor – 2 (both at CL qualifying stage)

Mulgrew – 2 (1 in EL qualifying, 1 in CL qualifying)

    Lustig – 1 (1 in CL qualifying)

    Ambrose – 1 (1 in CL qualifying)

    Kayal – 1 (1 in CL)

Commons – 4 (all in CL, 3 at qualifying stage)

    Prior to joining Celtic:

Pukki – 5 (all for HJK Helsinki, 2 in 10-0 CL qualifying win v Bangor City, 3 in EL qualifier v Schalke)

Berget – 3 (all for Molde, 1 in CL qualifying stage, 1 in EL qualifying, 1 in EL group stage)

Boerrigter – 2 CL group stage

That’s a total of 27 European goals scored amongst our squad who are fit for Wednesday, 17 of which were scored for Celtic. Only 7 of the goals have been scored in either the CL or EL group stages.

We`ve lost Samaras who had scored a total of 13 goals in Europe for Celtic plus 3 for Heerenveen. (The decision to let him go on a free seems even more idiotic to me now).

Of the goals scored a fair number come from set pieces (2 x van Dijk, 2 x Mulgrew, Lustig, Ambrose, 1 x Commons penalty) or from long range shots (Commons x 2, McGregor x 2, Kayal).

Some conclusions that I would take from this:-

    1. Set pieces will be crucial. We need to make the most of every set piece that we get.

    2. We`ve had some joy before from long shots. Well worth the best shots in the team – Commons, Griffiths and McGregor having cracks at goal if nothing else is on.

    3. We will struggle to score from open play.

    4. We could really be doing with Samaras for this game.

    5. If we make it into the Europa League group stages, never mind the Champions League, we will be desperately short of firepower without any better quality players being brought in in the attacking positions.
