Turning under-performance into awesomeness

661

I’m reliably informed Legia will not ‘park the bus’ on Wednesday.  Instead, with a three goal lead, they have enough legroom to play their normal game, attempt to compete in the middle of the park, and expose holes at the back, as they did last week.  What’s more, they’re unsure they would be able to park the bus successfully for an extended period.

Set aside the debacle what was our defensive performance for a moment.  The period of last week’s match Ronny Deila should initially concern himself with is the opening 25 minutes, when Celtic largely bossed the game.  We then have to consider the 40 minutes we looked comfortable with 10 men; not an insignificant achievement away from home in Europe.

In short, Legia are a team which for large periods of the game we looked to have the measure of, despite the anomalies of playing a debutant, an inexperienced youth and with a left back who was left out.  We should do far better at Murrayfield.

Legia believe they are going through.  They unquestionably have the upper hand but the Celtic collapse in the final minutes, when we appeared to be too busy picking fights than sticking to plan, distorted the perceived difference between the teams.  Celtic didn’t just underachieve, they did so on an epic scale.  What Legia don’t know, is what a highly-functional Celtic team looks like.

We need to transform that epic failure into the kind of performance we are capable of in Europe.  The defence needs to find the form which broke so many records last season.  Ronny needs to find some of his awesomeness.

The reality is, despite last week’s debacle, we’re still in this tie – and should plan to go through.

    Yep.So why pick on Haig.

    The indisputable fact.

    Haig was a winner.

Totally agree squire, Roy the boy deserves our utmost respect but he was no Danny, Kenny etc but by god he was very important to us in a time of decline. TB is rated a great but Roy in that period was probably the second most important player after mcstay until the kok…maybe lamberto

In the SFTB post I read I was picking up on his point about on what basis PL gets rewarded.

From similar debates in previous years it looks like the bonuses are based on what is easier to measure than what is important to measure.

Without know the basis for measurement we do not know what PL is being rewarded for.

If it’s for taking the flack he’s earning the money. ;)

One unit of measurement could be that ST sales do not fall below £xm for example but say there is a recession. How is that factored in if a drop is not the fault of the CEO? My point is what is an important but fair unit of measurement and that is not to defend any CEO buy to get the right system in place.

  17. Gordon I checked Polish websites again but could not find reports. Pity, some Polish idiots could do such things. Not sure if it’s only coincidence but I read articles that were translations from Scottish press. Scottish press was talking about Green Brigade plans for comming to Warsaw with Che Guevara and Antifa banners and provoking Legia Ultras. Celtic therefore was labelled as left wingers, friends to red and anarchist St. Pauli. Stupid articles in the Scottish press. I don’t know if you have seen Che Guevara erasured banner on Ultras stand? I have seen it. Communism symbols are hated here, in country that survived paying highest prices for freedom.

  20. My team for Wednesday:

    Stokes Griffiths

    Commons

    Izaguirre Johansen Biton McGregor

    Mulgrew VVD Lustig

3-5-2 – Back 3 staying narrow to limit space around 18 yard area where they picked a few passes with ease last week, with Johansen & Biton sitting deep and moving out to cover space left by Izzy & McGregor when they push forward. I’ve taken Mulgrew & Lustig over Izzy & Matthews in the back three simply as I feel they are better defenders.

Izzy where he is purely for his ability to deliver from last third, which I see as his biggest strength without him having as much pressure to defend (I’m not sure if Forrest is fit or he would get this spot). We know what McGregor can do.

For me LG is the best striker we have at making runs and finishing. Stokes and KC are cute enough to feed him and both can score. More importantly, all of them will shoot on-site which is what I always want from a striker, but definitely what we need on Wednesday.

Can’t afford any passengers, but lose a goal & it’s over. For this reason I would make the jobs of Johansen & Biton the key to making it work. They must work there socks off.

Let’s go for it. Bang 2 in before half time, get the crowd going & I can see this mob collapsing. They’re not bad, but they’re not Pep’s Barca either. Let’s see how they react when it’s squeaky bum time.
