Turning under-performance into awesomeness

661

I’m reliably informed Legia will not ‘park the bus’ on Wednesday.  Instead, with a three goal lead, they have enough legroom to play their normal game, attempt to compete in the middle of the park, and expose holes at the back, as they did last week.  What’s more, they’re unsure they would be able to park the bus successfully for an extended period.

Set aside the debacle what was our defensive performance for a moment.  The period of last week’s match Ronny Deila should initially concern himself with is the opening 25 minutes, when Celtic largely bossed the game.  We then have to consider the 40 minutes we looked comfortable with 10 men; not an insignificant achievement away from home in Europe.

In short, Legia are a team which for large periods of the game we looked to have the measure of, despite the anomalies of playing a debutant, an inexperienced youth and with a left back who was left out.  We should do far better at Murrayfield.

Legia believe they are going through.  They unquestionably have the upper hand but the Celtic collapse in the final minutes, when we appeared to be too busy picking fights than sticking to plan, distorted the perceived difference between the teams.  Celtic didn’t just underachieve, they did so on an epic scale.  What Legia don’t know, is what a highly-functional Celtic team looks like.

We need to transform that epic failure into the kind of performance we are capable of in Europe.  The defence needs to find the form which broke so many records last season.  Ronny needs to find some of his awesomeness.

The reality is, despite last week’s debacle, we’re still in this tie – and should plan to go through.

I’ll back you on Ledley, mate and throw in Sammi too. Forrest has his knockers but I’d take him at 80% fit also.

McGregor must play. He’s on form and scoring goals. While we need to be controlled and patient McGregor and Commons should be told to shoot on site with Stokes alert for the scraps.

Just noted Stefan proclaiming that “we are better than Legia”…..pointless and counter-productive.

  2. when is our club going to get its backside in gear and put the money on the table

for Armstrong and May….are they waiting until they are bought by English clubs?

then we moan about losing out for the next 10 years.

there are another 2 maybe 3 players in the top league that would do a job but we

drag our heels waiting, waiting…for what?

this nonsense gets trotted out every year about waiting to qualify for CL before signing, then we sign no-one remotely CL quality.

lets buy up the best about in Scotland tell some of our dross derk, pukki, balde etc its time to go find another club then sign 2 or 3 experienced (28-30 year old) guys from the continent to add a bit of technical ability.

isn’t it this easy?…shouldn’t it be?

  3. TBB

It is looking more like his remit is to pick the aquisitions and force them on the manager.

Of all the players purchased last year how many do you believe were Neil Lennon’s choice of player. I don’t see one player on that list that NL would have had as his player of choice.

So much wool pulled over the eyes in here now-a-days I sometimes wonder if I am on an Aberdeen fans site. (that is not a dig at you BTW. just the general malaise of this dear green place at times).

JJ, fans paying money have every right to blame who they wish. Employees earning money have to earn it and if they under perform accept that blame while they do their jobs. I will blame those whom i believe to be a fault until they prove themselves otherwise.

PL and the board are going for cheap options and prospective profit when employing players and just cheap for cheap option managers. They are solely to blame if the downsizing affects the teams standards. Not the cheap option manager or players who cannot hold to the potential the scouting system thinks they may have and fail on the cheap.

I think it is an valid request to have the breakdown of all directors bonus made public.

a comparison between this year and last year and a full breakdown of the increase or decrease for that particular Directors bonus, this can also be done in options too, totalling to a total figure for the board in monetary and share option terms.

I agree with you on your point about us having confidence in the reward system used by the club, and ensuring that bonus’s are questioned and a bigger communication gap than the one that exists at the moment between fan and board is not made wider,

  6. Was opposed to Ronny’s appointment but he is there now and must be given a fair chance, he should get at least a season. My only caveat would be in the unlikely event that we are struggling in the SPFL, then I would be screaming for an immediate change but apart from that he should be given a season to make his mark.

Thanks for that. Guess that money won’t be spent on one player who can effortlessly put the ball in the net.

The feeling I have just now is that we have fallen away quite badly. Mainly I think because I don’t feel we have the quality of players up front who are likely to score against better European teams.

Hope I am proved completely wrong.

  9. Mwd – fair comment. But I don’t agree. I am somewhere on the spectrum that says the strategy is broadly right but beginning to wonder if we have the right people delivering it in different depts of the club.

Madmitch – if I’d thought for a moment I would have recalled mcgeouch playing senior football already. That said I hope I am wrong but I am not convinced about him.

Like you I don’t know about Henderson.

NFL signed all of the players, until he says otherwise? – that’s why bumping his gums about lack of investment could be viewed as disingenuous.

He was happy lifting his salary in his fully committed stay at Celtic where it’s totally unlikely he went to Portugal to watch Amido Balde came home hated him, but signed him anyway, because PL told him to.

Even if transfers aren’t always handpicked by the manager the signing policy at Celtic is unlikely to be different to any other club where the hierarchy, and scouts are included in deciding who comes in, and out of the revolving door.

I don’t subscribe to your description of John Park’s remit, although I have to say, if that is what it is, it would go some way to explaining recent underperformance.

Our transfer policy of ignoring Scotland’s finest talent that plays week in week out right in front of our noses, and instead going into Europe and buying up expensive DUDS, yeah whats that about, has me completely flummoxed, anyone suggesting it as a plan would be run out of town, but we as a support, me included, just seem to accept it placidly as if its perfectly natural. Weird.

Interesting article in yesterday’s Sunday Times magazine, by AA Gill.

He writes about Scotland’s history and it’s relationship with England.

Armstrong, McGinn, Mackay Steven & May would be better signings than Balde, Pukki, Boerrigter and the procession of frees and loanees we’ve had over the last few years.

We should be buying up the best of the young talent in our own league to supplement our own home produced talent before taking a chance on sub standard player from abroad.

Players like Victor are the exception, not the rule and the sooner our scouts stop collecting airmiles and start looking closer to home the better.

  26. The Battered Bunnet on

I’m all for Celtic signing the best youngsters in Scotland, provided they’re good enough. Very few are.

I like Armstrong at Utd, but along with GMS he didn’t show up in the Cup Final, and that was disappointing. folk mention Stevie May, and I have a huge amount of respect for the work he puts into his game, something Tony Watt could have done with, but I’m not convinced he’ll become the player others are suggesting. Rotherham think he’s worth a punt, having recently been promoted from the 3rd tier of English football.

I did want us to sign Johnny Russell, figuring £750K was decent value for a younger, faster, more skilful Tony Stokes.

The only one we ought to have signed in the past 5 years was McCarthy, a cracking young player then, and a better one now. He was at Celtic Park, thought a deal was done, but it wasn’t.

Unfortunately the manager at the time didn’t rate him ahead of Fortuné, N’Guemo, Fox or Zheng Zhi, and he went to Wigan for £1M or thereabouts.

I note (from my extensive research on the matter…) that Paul Slane was signed from Motherwell at the same time. Paul was considered one of the top prospects at U19 in Scotland at the time. He made his debut on Saturday for Lowland League newcomers Broomhill Sports Club.

    Funny old game.

  27. A moral boosting competent win with 2 good wins in the Europa play off to cement out place in that competition is about the best we can hope for.

I can’t see a 3-0, you can’t play as badly as we did away from home at this level and hope to go through.

  28. One plus since the game at Legia. We’ve talked almost nothing but Celtic and football for days now.

  29. I’ve just spoken to a source at Celtic.

    It’s official.

Neil signed all the successful signings. Peter Lawell and John Park signed all the diddies against Neil’s wishes.

Peter picked the team against Ross County and also against Utrecht which were definitely much more embarrassing defeats than losing to the champions of Poland.

Neil didn’t really lose to Sion on the park and we really qualified through the front door for the group stages of the Europa league.

Some people on here have short memories.
