Two faces of Sturgeon for Celtic/Aberdeen and Newco

281

Ask anyone at Celtic Park or Pittodrie what the consequences are when players at Scottish clubs are and they will tell you: games cancelled for two weeks by the Scottish Government, a “yellow card” issued by the First Minister herself.

At the time, Ms Sturgeon said, “We can’t have privileged football players just deciding that they are not going to bother.  This can’t go on.”

There was, however, no grandstanding from Sturgeon yesterday when two Newco players were caught by police breaking Covid rules.  Instead, the Scottish Government slipped out a statement COMMENDING Newco:

“Players maintain the sporting bubble by not compromising any of these things when away from the heavy regulated training or match environment, and we expect clubs and their staff and players to fulfil their responsibilities and apply all of these measures rigorously.

“We commend Rangers for taking such swift and decisive action in this instance, to protect the rest of their squad and wider public.”

One club is commended for doing that two others were punished for.  I know how things work in Scotland.  The SNP is far from popular among supporters at Ibrox, which remains an important political constituency, but turning a blind eye when the First Minister grabbed the opportunity to jump on Celtic is unworthy of the office.

FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE FULL INITIATIVE FROM ADIDAS

adidas has now launched an initiative designed to help grassroots and amateur football teams across Europe with a provision of 150,000 free kits. The adidas Football Collective: For the Game experience will live through adidas.com and the adidas app.

In 2020, the future of football clubs across the world has been thrown into doubt more than at any other time in recent history. In Europe, whilst the top divisions at the elite level have largely returned to entertaining fans and playing in stadiums, there are significant challenges at lower levels of football.

Traditional revenue streams that maintain football have been severely affected and at the amateur level particularly, there is no safety net or support structure in place to keep clubs and teams going through this challenging time. One of the biggest financial considerations for a club or team at this level is the purchase of their kit, which not only has an important functional purpose but creates identity, belonging and connection.

To alleviate this concern for teams and clubs adidas have created the adidas Football Collective: For the Game initiative that will deliver 150,000 kits to over 10,000 teams across Europe throughout November with adult, women’s and youth sets being provided.

The largest ever support of its kind from the brand is live from today with teams or individuals being able to simply sign up to win a kit at adidas.com or the adidas app. The opportunity will close on November 9th at which point adidas will draw the winners at random and they will receive their kits latest mid-December.

The initiative will be amplified by adidas social channels, athletes and partners as well as by one of the world’s leading coaches, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who said; “The last few months have all been about bringing the professional game back, but let’s be honest – its football for a few. Without grassroots, there is no professional football. We have to support the amateur game as well. 150,000 football kits to 10,000 teams in Europe. That’s our pledge to amateur football.”

Christian Leiser, VP adidas Football Europe said; “Whilst it’s been amazing to see the game we love return to our screens, we know that football’s real power lies in its simplicity and universal appeal. Football kits are one of the few things you need to create a game and bring people together though sport. We hope that the adidas Football Collective: For the Game initiative will help footballers across Europe continue to enjoy the game they love.”

As well as provision of men’s, women’s and youth kits there will be a range of colourways and sizes available. The initiative will be open to footballers in the following countries; UK, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Poland, Hungary, and Czech Republic.

Simply visit http://www.adidas.com/footballcollective, go through the adidas app or connect with participating local teamwear retailers.

The For the Game initiative has been created under the banner of the recently launched adidas Football Collective – a new movement and unique cooperative of individuals, clubs and communities who are united by the belief that through football, a positive change can be created. Building on its own history of utilising the power of sport to change lives, and bringing together its past, current and future initiative, adidas have committed to continue to work together with local trailblazers to help evolve and develop city-specific initiatives under the adidas Football Collective badge.

    Hola

I never said I never encountered prejudice, because I did encounter it.

From not getting an apprenticeship in the yards (and a full told to me story of why ) to regulalry told I was a FB by works managers or group leaders or fellow “higher up” employees who thought it was ok to say these

things, A punch in the gub at a night out often had them with a different moodset come the next working shift.

I also didnt get picked in football games and believe it was motivated by prejudice. Bizarely thought the Port Rangers manager was my neighbour and asked me to play for them which was never going to happen.

For sure in my working life I had the support of many many experienced great men who told me to go get educated and overtake them that way, it happened.

However that was nearly 40 years ago, and in my lifetime as I advanced my own education, career and well stood up for myslef and others , I feel we got somewhere.

The youngers in my family, when I tell them these stroies, and the same of The troubles look at me and sometimes dont believe it, they think I make some of it up, because in modern Scotland they dont feel threatened at all. The days of the big walks and whole districts locked down well it really is in the past, mostly.

It might still happen, if it does people should call it out not just say “Scotland is sectarian”,

  6. Well done, you have done well.

For what it’s worth I’m in the “Call it out ” camp.

as an aside, maybe working for a multi-national, even in the port and greenock, they had to be fair, not seen to be anything in anyway other than fair, the executive clique in IBM were absolutely out to make the business work and reward for themselves, I got as hard a time from “catholic” managers , some celtic supporters, as I did from the others, althoug a couple for sure looked after me as well.

I encounter many heads of business in this era, it is always pleasant to hear a scottish voice, and more often than not they went to a Saints school, not only St Als.

It is a modern world, I dont fear the future for minorities (are we really that ?) in an independent scotland.

  9. Ivan Toney scores his 10th this season. Can’t help thinking we should have picked this lad up.

  10. Monchengladbach win 6-0 away against Shakhtar in Champions League, only their second ever away CL victory. Commentator has to mention of course that their only other one was against us.

  11. Cosy Corner Bhoy on

After independence Nicola will bail out! Cloud cuckoo land. Power corrupts absolute power corrupts absolutely! She shows no inclination to treat Catholics equally when the opportunity arises and on achieving the Promised Land will still expect to be in charge IMO.

Be careful what you wish for.

  12. I ask again,

in Scotland today, where are CATHOLICS not being treated the same as everybody else ?

A Columbian player, slapping out at Scott Brown & kicking out at Shane Duffy

An Aberdeen player, forearm smash on Albian Ajeti

Seen a message earlier from a Sheep fan

Well according to that guy who writes for the Herald (McKenna?), in the SNP. He seems to think that holding traditional Catholic values are not an aid to preferment. At least I think that’s what he’s saying, I don’t pay too much attention.

    ———————————

Did the last crime figures published in Scotland not state that as a Catholic you are 3 times more likely to be a victim of a religiously aggravated assualt than any other denomination/religion?

I’m pretty sure that was highlighted on here by someone?

    Happy to be corrected

  17. Tough call on the US elections tonight given that ninety million have already voted in advance. UK pollsters pretty much called the General Election last December just after the doors closed, but not sure how easy that will be in the USA. Maybe need a few key States, like FLA and PA (see what I did there) to actually announce the results before we get a clearer idea of what is happening. That said Joe Biden appears to have been in good shape in States some of which he needs to win, including the two mentioned above. I’ve witnessed a couple of disasters up close, not this time though, and I’m gonna go with Joe to win, and with a bit of luck the Democrats to take both the House and the Senate. Then again I’m an advocate of the Chicago School of Voting……

    Vote early! And Vote often!

    ………………………….

In business, the anti-Catholic sentiment is rife, I have been involved in it.

Football, if you can in all honesty tell me that Celtic, who are perceived as Catholic, are treated equally I will agree with you, otherwise, with respect, you really need to open your eyes.

I voted for independence… I did so knowing it wouldn’t happen.. I wanted to give a bloody nose… I’ve never voted snp…. If indy 2 comes up…. I’ll have deep reservations to vote yes again….
