Two faces of Sturgeon for Celtic/Aberdeen and Newco

281

Ask anyone at Celtic Park or Pittodrie what the consequences are when players at Scottish clubs are and they will tell you: games cancelled for two weeks by the Scottish Government, a “yellow card” issued by the First Minister herself.

At the time, Ms Sturgeon said, “We can’t have privileged football players just deciding that they are not going to bother.  This can’t go on.”

There was, however, no grandstanding from Sturgeon yesterday when two Newco players were caught by police breaking Covid rules.  Instead, the Scottish Government slipped out a statement COMMENDING Newco:

“Players maintain the sporting bubble by not compromising any of these things when away from the heavy regulated training or match environment, and we expect clubs and their staff and players to fulfil their responsibilities and apply all of these measures rigorously.

“We commend Rangers for taking such swift and decisive action in this instance, to protect the rest of their squad and wider public.”

One club is commended for doing that two others were punished for.  I know how things work in Scotland.  The SNP is far from popular among supporters at Ibrox, which remains an important political constituency, but turning a blind eye when the First Minister grabbed the opportunity to jump on Celtic is unworthy of the office.

“We played Killie on Sunday 9th August. On the 10th August the newspapers quote “After belatedly learning of the trip, furious Celtic bosses hauled Bolingoli in for a heated meeting at Parkhead on Monday”

They reported “On Monday night the defender – who has since tested negative for the virus – said: ‘I have made a huge mistake. I want to apologise to my manager, my team-mates, the supporters, everyone at Celtic and so many others for letting them down so badly.

‘I am guilty of a major error of judgement. I know what I did was wrong and I know that I must now deal with the consequences.’

The club has now launched an internal probe.

A spokesman said: ‘Celtic Football Club has taken its response to Covid-19 extremely seriously and we are pleased that, to date, we have recorded no positive tests.

‘Our staff have given so much in this area, working tirelessly to ensure that all players and other club personnel are safe, fully aware of their own responsibilities and familiar with all guidance and protocols.

‘Safety must always be our priority.

‘Clearly, a full investigation will now take place and the club will take all appropriate action.

‘Subsequent to the player’s return he has recorded two negative tests in the past week.’

The Celtic reaction time was just as quick as the Sevco reaction time. The only way Celtic could have acted quicker was to convene on the Sunday evening. It certainly did not take a week and I am surprised at our own putting out this false narrative.

On the Jones/Edmundsen issue , I lean more to TBB’ side of the argument. Rangers punished their players as soon as they heard about it ; so did celtic with Bolingoi. Both the SFA and the Celtic Board are bound by legal poicy on disciplinary procedures and, beyond the immediate suspension of hte player(s) cannot issue instant judgements until there has been an investigation with the player being present and/or represented.

It took the SFA until the 14th August to issue their citation to Bolingoli and it took until the 28th August for the governing body to ban Bolingoli for 5 games (compared to the 3 game ban suffered by the Aberdeen 8). It took them until the 21st September to issue a £30k fine to both Aberdeen and Celtic, though they on;y paid £8k each with the rest suspended.

Celtic’s prompt action and fining of Bolingoli and issuing their own citation of an investigation did not head off the wrath of the Scottish Govt, and it certainly did not solicit a letter of commendation. In the end both clubs meekly accepted their fines knowing that a wrathful Scottish government was inclined to be more vengeful shoul they have complained.

There are several subtle but telling differences in the Edmondson”Jones case.

    1) Someone did the Ibrox club a favour in telling them ahead of the press so they could be proactive. in contrast, Celtic were blindsided by the lies of Bolingoli and the delay of release of information by the press.

    2) Neither Edmundson or Jones contaminated any other player in their bubble; we cannot say the same of Bolingoli and the Aberdeen 8.

    3) The Government issued hostile noises towards Scottish football in general and that encouraged the SFA to be hard and seen to be hard on both clubs. In contrast, Sevco got a surprising letter of commendation.

The issues of actual Covid outbreaks at St. Mirren and Killie are red herrings. You cannot be fined or prosecuted for suffering Covid; only for breaking the Covid regulations, and neither club had done so.

So, while the letter of commendation is bizarre and inexcusable, the Scottish Govt. have not as yet done much wrong here in the way of punishment. We can fully expect that the SFA will take some timeto gather info from Sevco and , in due course, Sevco will fine and punish these two players. Later, the SFA will fine and punish both players and Sevco FC with a fine, most of it suspended, for the club and both players. They will issue a short playing ban to both players too.

I have no love of the SNP govt; but the only thing we have on them is their etter of commendation- “What’s that about?”

Before we go OTT on the matter- let it run its course- this is not over. And remember, Leigh Griffiths did not suffer any action from the government or the SFA for his house party being over numbers. They could have, though and they could have encouraged the League or SFA to do so .

So, let’s have a bit of balance/ Let us see if the SFA fail to punish Jones & Edmondson and Sevco. ANd let us see, then if the SNP makes any “populist” announcement either way.

We have crossed swords on many an occasion so accusing you of “fake news”, is something I’m loathed to do. Still, what you have written is incredulous – so I must put down to some serious mis-remembering.

Also avoiding the points I made while addressing your own!? Still, though nothing new there;)))

“…The only way Celtic could have acted quicker was to convene on the Sunday evening. It certainly did not take a week and I am surprised at our own putting out this false narrative.

Bolingoli went to Malaga on the 3rd August, the Kilmarnock game was on 9th August, Celtic announced the breach on the 10th August. That’s a week. Nothing false, dems the dates… re-check.

I’m also not sure what Celtic convening on a Sunday evening means!? If there is a Covid breach or positive test or whatever immediate action takes place, immediate.

It’s a 24//7 operation. Now are you saying Celtic were aware something was amiss on Sunday but thought, I’ve got better things to be doing, this can wait til tomorrow!? Viruses don’t work that way, they don’t do the sabbath.

“On the Jones/Edmundsen issue , I lean more to TBB’ side of the argument. Rangers punished their players as soon as they heard about it ; so did celtic with Bolingoi.

Once again wrong!! We had a lot of bluster from Lenny but very little of substance by the Club. In fact it got very embarrassing as presser after presser Lenny was asked about Bolingoli affair and had to waffle.

In fact it was the 12th September that Lenny confirmed Boligoli had been fined. After a long period of not very transparent investigation.

As far as the SFA investigation goes, this was actually the Joint Response Group, with the SPFL. The inestigation did take quite sometime and it was the SPFL and not the SFA that issued the fines and suspensions.

There is no reason to believe that a similar investigation won’t take place into the Rangers two. Celtic and Aberdeen weren’t exonerated during this process but as you state, the burden of the punishment was with the players and while the Joint Response Group said their protocols needed to be more “robust”, they said both Celtic and Aberdeen had worked hard to adhere to the rules, so although the protocols were breached, as you say, most of the fines to the Clubs were suspended.

We were only two weeks into the season and it had been headline after headline regarding Scottish Football Covid issues, red herrings or not, it was obvious neither the Clubs nor the Authorities had prepared sufficently, it was this that got the wrath of the Scottish people and Government.

It was simple… Scottish Football needed to get it’s act together or be locked down.

“1) Someone did the Ibrox club a favour in telling them ahead of the press so they could be proactive. in contrast, Celtic were blindsided by the lies of Bolingoli and the delay of release of information by the press.

Where do you start with this… seriously…

Someone did the Ibrox Club a favour, REALLY!! Didn’t see that one coming:)))) Was it a bigger favour than the Celtic Board did for the fledgling Club? I doubt it. Surely the 5 way agreement has an “Act of God” clause.

We have been saying for years that the ten would never be allowed and yet in the last three years we have downsized 30%. We were untouchable.

As for blindsided… the smartest ghuys in the room with the multi-million pound bonuses blindsided… Quelle surprise.

Yet to the point I originally made. Why does the CQN lead want from Sturgeon to act as she did in August when she issued a yellow card!? The next step is a Red Card, the only Club that benefits from that is the one at the top of the league with most points per game.

Maybe such an announcement would be populist (I don’t think it would), maybe politicians often make populist announcements, it’s in the blood.

As you know, I’m not short of criticism for the way Scottish Football is run, but after a very shaky start they responded well to the Covid threat, a minefield really…

Let me remind you what CQN said of Aberdeen and Dave Cormack, just before the Bolingoli thing was announced.

“The days of booze and betting sponsorships doesn’t really tie in with healthy living and being at the heart of our communities.

“Football can be a magnet for people, healthy living and mental health, so we need to be at the centre of the community.”

The words of Aberdeen chairman, Dave Cormack, spoken less than two weeks ago.  Yesterday, we discovered two of his players tested positive for Covid and a further six have been isolated as all eight attended the pub at the centre of the Aberdeen outbreak.

Mr Cormack, those are empty words.  Today, you are a poster boy for poor governance in healthy living, booze and the caring for the heart of your community.  Your primary task as a director of a football club is to direct the actions of those you control.  What happened?

Well I’ll tell you what happened; Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo – Malaga happened

You live and learn… well at least some of us do…

I’ll try to deal with your post one point at a time

Bolingoli went to Malaga on the 3rd August, the Kilmarnock game was on 9th August, Celtic announced the breach on the 10th August. That’s a week. Nothing false, dems the dates… re-check.

I’m also not sure what Celtic convening on a Sunday evening means!? If there is a Covid breach or positive test or whatever immediate action takes place, immediate.

You had asserted it took Celtic “a week to sort the mess”. Now, you jutify that as starting from the date that Bolingoli went to Malaga. Now for that date to be part of “Celtic’s mess”, they would need to have been aware that he was in Spain, a country that required the 14 day quarantine on return. Again, I don’t know how stupid you think our club is, but to fit your narrative, Celtic would need to have know n he was in Spain, colluded with him in the pretence that he was in Belgium, as that is what he told the club, and then risked him mixing with the squad at training and on match day, and further risked our reputation by playing him in the game, as an unnecessary sub for 3 minutes. Further, you would have to believe that all the anger afterwards from the club wasjust feigned bluster and that Bolingoli agreed to be shipped out to Turkey and kept quiet about the club’s collusion as he was left out to dry.

Alternatively, you believe what the club said. i.e. that they only found out after the game and acted as quickly as the huns did by getting their punishments and intentions published in the paper the next working day (That is what I mean by “the only way they could have been faster”) . As soon as they found out they arranged tests for Bolingoli and the squad and were able to quickly announce that no positive Covid test was returned by anybody. Thereafter our strict teasting regime ensured that any development of Covid would have been caught quicly and announced quickly to authorities.

So, while you are throwing out accusations of fake news…..

    What do you believe:-

    1) That Celtic knew for a week from the 3rd to the 9th that Bolingoli was in Spain and were cavalier in their treatment of their whole squad?

    2) That they should have known he was in Spain either through clairvoyance, lie detector screening or by constant tracking all players movements?

or 3) Celtic found out after the match and acted within a day to ensure the health of the rest of the squad and informed the authorities?

I will deal with the other points you raise once you reply to state what you actually think the week was that Celtic knew and acted upon.

  10. “Once again wrong!! We had a lot of bluster from Lenny but very little of substance by the Club. In fact it got very embarrassing as presser after presser Lenny was asked about Bolingoli affair and had to waffle.”

The papers knew on Monday that the club had launched an internal probe and were looking to take all possible actions open to them. The press probed Lenny at the Presser to give further details about this ( in a way that they are not probing the statement from Ibrox) and any “bluster” comes from the fact that Lenny cannot detail , ahead of a full and proper HR investigation, the full details of the outcome. If Lenny had let rip with his own opinion on the player, he would have jeopardised a procedure that needs to be watertight if the player is not to get away with his folly. At no time did the club or Lenny try to defend the behaviour or minimise it (as he had done with Griff’s family house party). There was no mistaking the club’s anger, the support’s anger or the general mood. The only toime the club became defensive was when pundits started touting forfeited points for a club that was, do you not agree, an innocent party in this offence.

  13. Astounded at the amount of posters siding with the huns on this issue, their players broke the rules, whether I agree with them is not the point, the rules were broken so they, the huns, like us and the sheep should be punished, but as usual the media are circling the wagons and again they can do what the eff that want with total impunity so.

  15. Someone did the Ibrox Club a favour, REALLY!! Didn’t see that one coming:)))) Was it a bigger favour than the Celtic Board did for the fledgling Club? I doubt it. Surely the 5 way agreement has an “Act of God” clause.

WTAF- this is a complete red herring. Do you not agree that the Ibrox club were advantaged in this story as they were informed(by a fan or the police) BEFORE these players turned up at training the next day? That was the favour! We did not get this favour because Bolingoli did not tell us until some time after the match. A newspaper allegedly knew hwere he had been but chose not to tell Celtic, preferring to blindside them with that after the match, or , alternatively, according to another story, a Celtic fan who had seen Bolingli in Spain was astounded to see him on the pitch and informed either celtic, the newspaper or the Authorities. Either way- are you still saying celtic knew before and ashoulf have acted before.

Introducing the 5 way agreement is a total red herring. We both agree that the club was culpable on that front. Being culpable on the 5 way agreement does not transalte into “they must be guilty of everything they are accused of”.

We have been saying for years that the ten would never be allowed and yet in the last three years we have downsized 30%. We were untouchable.

More and more red herrings, totally unrelated to the Boli story. It has no relevance in this.

As for blindsided… the smartest ghuys in the room with the multi-million pound bonuses blindsided… Quelle surprise.

Does being smart and well dressed automatically convey the gift of clairvoyance? They were blindsided by a player lying to them. At what salary level do you become responsible for another man’s lies?

Your final point about a CQN editorial directed at Dave Cormack is your last red herring. Why direct that to me. Those are not my words. Those are not my sentiments.

Are you going by the name of Gombeen Man on SC?

Gombeen man is pushing a very similar narrative.

Here’s a cracker from his post:-

“5) On 10th Aug NL is quoted about Griffiths and Leigh’s breach of Covid restrictions…(Evening Times)

“I’m not convinced it’s a big issue, so hopefully it’ll be resolved in a couple of days. He’s got a calf strain at the moment, so he’d of missed the game anyway.”

Now the story of Griff’s house party broke on the 7th August, before the Killie game. Neil had already commented upon it, trying to downplay it (Bad as it was, Leigh’s offence was the same as Jeremy Corbyn’s amd several others).

The ET story that Gombeen quotes on the 10th is just a re-hash of what was said about these matters. I cannot be alone in detecting either an intentional or unintentional hint hat Neil was downplaying the Bolingoli incident by moving his comments on Leigh to the 10th of August.

Leigh was not the story on that day and any attenpt to move his timeline is mischievious. We have enough enemies trying to hold us to a dfferent standard. Are you not angry that the Scottish government congratulated Sevco for their statement? Are you not angry that the press is so incurious in investigating what happened with Jones and Edmundson (and whoever else was there)?

Peter Lawwell is a very bad man on many counts but neither he nor Lenny created undue difficulty in dealing with the upshot of stories on Leigh’s (minor breach) and Bolingoli’s (hugely serious breach) breaches.

What would you have done differently in each case?

  20. The simple question is……… Did rangers players break the rules??…… Did wee nicola go off on one not only abut football players but also about house party’s in general?… Double whammy
