Udinese 1-1 Celtic

436

Udinese were pushed all the way tonight but hold on for a point that was enough to get them through to the knock out round of the Europa League at Celtic’s expense.  Gary Hooper gave Celtic the lead but Antonio Di Natale equalised in time added on at the end of the first half.

The game was only six minutes old when Georgios Samaras extended his telescopic legs and moved beyond Benatia to the edge of the Udinese box but the defender dived in front of the Greek striker to con the referee into awarding a free kick.

Udinese should have taken the lead in 12 minutes when Scott Brown was careless with a cross-field pass which was intercepted.  The Celtic defence were caught moving forward and had left Di Natale in acres of space but his lob missed the target.

Gary Hooper was the next sinner 10 minutes later.  Udinese had no answer to the probing of Samaras and James Forrest.  The former beat two players and slid an inch perfect pass inside the full back for Hooper to collect 16 yards from goal.  Unfortunately he failed to find the target with what at that time looked like being the best chance of the game.

Celtic opened the scoring on 28 minutes when Samaras rampaged down the left and sent a dangerous cross between goalkeeper and defence.  Handanovic punched the ball against his own defender and was left stranded when it rolled to an unmarked Hooper three yards from goal.  The Englishman rolled the ball over the line to put Celtic ahead.

With 45 minutes already played Samaras again rampaged down the left but possession was lost as Celtic were reluctant to pour forward seconds before half time.  Udinese moved the ball quickly up field and a fortunate break of the ball allowed them to catch the Celtic defence flat footed.  Cha was wrong side of his player who crossed for Di Natale to finish.  It was an unfortunate break for Celtic who had the better of the first half.

Udinese stepped up the pace after half time and enjoyed their best period of the game.  Fraser Forster made three saves within as many minutes just after the hour mark.  Ten minutes later a sharp passing move provided Asamoa with a gilt edged chance from 10 yards but he turned the ball against the post with Forster stranded but this signalled the end of the home team’s pressure.

Celtic came close to taking the lead again on 74 minutes when Cha DuRi stretched to volley from outside the box.  His shot struck the post with Handanovic unable to reach it.  The ball rebounded off the goalkeeper, who landed on the ground, and spun back towards goal, but Handanovic recovered in time to catch it on the line.

Greek referee, Koukoulakis, did not have a good game, mistook Cha for Scott Brown and incorrectly booked the Korean.  18 minutes later he booked Cha again but had clearly received a message from an assistant informing him of his earlier mistake, leaving Cha bemused and relieved to survive his second yellow card.

Celtic were pressing for the goal but with 10 minutes remaining a slip by Daniel Majstorovic set Di Natale clear.  Fraser Forster then had the most impressive 6 seconds of his career.  The keeper made himself a big target and saved Di Natale’s shot but he had change direction quickly as the ball broke free on the right.  A cross was swiftly dropped onto the head of the unmarked Di Natale 8 yards from goal but Forster changed direction one more time to save again.

The match finished with Celtic camped inside the Udinese box.  The ball broke to Ki inside the six yard box from a Charlie Mulgrew corner but his shot was blocked.  Fraser Forster came forward for two further corners.  From one, Daniel Majstorovic flashed a header goalward but an Udinese defender raised his arm to the ball, however, the referee failed to award a penalty.

  1. To be honest I think the banner makes us look a bit ridiculous. It implies that UEFA somehow have it in for us. We are starting to sound more and more like Rangers.

    I agree that the punishment was at the very least excessive but if you were able to see it from UEFA’s perspective you would note that the ‘offence’ had been reported by the police of the club’s own country. In any other country on the planet you would be entitled to believe without further question that a significant offence had taken place and punish accordingly. It is simply too much to expect UEFA to have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of this new and warped legislation and the disgusting and blatant targeting of the GB by Strathclyde police. Our real enemies are all at home.

    Totally agree. The banner should have said “F*** Eddie Smith” or “F*** the SNP”. That would have been a more accurate description of where our anger should be directed…

    Should have refreshed before posting doh. Good morning from a snow covered gourock. Well done to the team for a great performance against one of the best teams in Europe at the moment.

  5. Morning CQNers. Although we didnt quite do it last night, I woke up this morning proud to be a tim. The performance against one of the best teams in Italy was immense, Forster and Samaras in particular impressing. There is a lot more to come from this young team, and I am convinced we will win the treble. Also for what its worth, I thought Ki had a good game last night, I see some people are slating him a bit. Unfair in my opinion.

  6. A banner saying ‘F*** UEFA’.

    Not doing ourselves any favours, that will be another needless black mark against the club.

    I can’t wait for Sunday.

    I’ve really enjoyed the European games this season. It’s been great watching a young Celtic team mature at a better level. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how young our squad is.

    These games should help us enormously when it comes to the Champions League qualifiers next season. We also seem to have hit form now after that woeful spell earlier in the campaign.

    Celtic just have to keep the winning run going in the league and business will take care of itself.

  8. Morning all from gay Paree, temps du jour: high winds and rain like “vaches qui pissent”.

    Well done last night for a very creditable result, and overall a very good performance in this year’s European campaign.

    The team, very seldom at full strength, is looking to gel and the team spirit and confidnce is there.

    Let’s go on now to get a domestic treble and bury the other lot.

    About the “banner”, an own goal due to it being the wrong target:

    UEFA, although the amount of the fine was harsh, couldn’t do much else after we were “cliped” by the the local plod.

    Morning,all.

    My take on the allegations against the support,and the charge levelled against the club,are tha someone has looked through the UEFA rulebook with a fine toothcomb.

    As we are aware,our songs are NOT sectarian,nor are they illegal,racist,or offensive,so they went down the “illicit ” route.

    Ths is a clause which is designed to prevent the over-politicisation of football,and is a catch-all without being specific. Think Breach of the Peace,if you will,where the cops decide they’re gonna do you,come what may,innocent or not.

    Having had the notification from a national police force that such chanting took place,UEFA were therefore duty-bound to punish us accordingly,as they can hardly ignore their own regulations.

    But equally,I’m sure that UEFA would rather not set a precedent over such a trivial matter.

    The verdict is therefore crying out to be appealed,as that would satisfy all parties.

    The appeal has to be on the grounds that the chants were not sufficiently widespread or frequent to breach the regulations-I was about five yards from The Green Brigade,and heard nothing untoward-followed by a clarification from UEFA on the type of chants which will fall foul.

    We can then move on with a clean slate and slapped wrists. And remember that revenge is a dish best served cold…….

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    BTW, “cream puff” might be a bit of an understatement…..
  10. bj mac – I hope you don’t mind that I used the main points from your email to the SNP yesterday to pen a similar one to my MSP, Colin Keir.
    I also added that if this country seriously wanted to tackle sectarianism, then it would outlaw Orange Walks which are quite simply official displays of anti-Catholic bigotry.
  13. Has to be said after our exit from Europa League we are a far better side now than when we played Sion.
    All credit to Neil and his staff, we look in good shape for the rest of the season.
  14. Laptop Loyal spewing at our performance last night!
    Grudgingly, reporting how well we played but making sure words like, ‘tumbled’, ‘crashed’ and ‘failed’ are used.
    Lets not forget the away record, got to mention that a few times.
    “There’s writing on the wall…”
  15. A good fighting performance against a top side, in which a bit of luck deserted us. Special mentions to Forster and Sammi.
    Sadly all the headlines in the papers are about the fans, I feel sorry for the majority who went and backed their team who were let down by a small minority of f***wits. I feel a massive fine and perhaps an away game ban coming.
    Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?   19. Good morning from MK where we’ve had a snow flurry.
    There were so many positives to be taken from last night’s game with more and more players producing eye-catching performances. Particularly impressive was Fraser Forster who I’ve got to admit frustrated me in the past with his timid displays but last night when it mattered he rose to the challenge.
    It was so important to keep the momentum going and last night’s performance added to it
    .
    Well done to everyone concerned except for the attention seeking clown with the banner who let the side down, his message was neither profound or humorous.
    It`s time for Celtic supporters who have no wish to stick their POLITICAL or RELIGIOUS views to our Club to expunge the cancer from our midst.
    In other words,Celtic supporters who don`t care about those preferences, because they`re irrelevant.
    In other words,decent inclusive people.
