Uefa accounts submission Deadline Day

413

18 October has been in the diary for a while.  Today is the day teams in European competition have to submit their accounts for last season to Uefa.  If you are in European competition, your accounts must be ready to publish.  If they are ready and you have not published them, why?

Celtic’s accounts were published a month ago; Celtic have nothing to worry about or hide.  Newco have yet to let their fans know what the figures look like.  They will eventually be published, of course, when we will gain an insight into why they were unable to spend in the transfer market after qualifying for the Champions League.

I also expect to see the resolution of their dispute with Sports Direct International.  At the lower end, this could be a charge in the region of £2m, but at the punitive end, it could be as high as £8m.  It will also be interesting to read whether they could afford to settle this debt outright or had to commit to a long-term payment plan.   Knowing what a slick operation Newco are, I expect a punitive settlement that overreaches their immediate resources and a decade long mortage-type payment.

As in politics, money eventually outs you in football.  When we read club accounts we cannot get the thrill we get from a match result, but the consequences are far greater.

There is something incredibly endearing about Frank McGarvey.  He is out there, facing the illness no one likes talking about, without awkwardness or hushed tones.  Everyone has to find their own way to deal with illness, we are not all like Frank, but again, facing this hurdle, he has given us an example to admire.

Focus for today will be on performance tonight. And the result it will achieve for us. In Ange we trust.

  3. I don’t think the 1966 League Cup Final when we beat The old Currant Buns 1-0 scored by Bobby Lennox gets the praise and importance it played at the start of the Jock Stein era. Sure the ’65 Scottish Cup win gets the plaudits as being the one that sent us on our way, but, this was us finally beating them in a major final and they now knew we were a force to be reckoned with, and so did both sets of fans, as this game came hard on the heels of 0-4 thrashing of them at Ibrox in the Glasgow Cup, with Bobby scoring a Hat-Trick! Also, it was my first League Cup Final! :)))))) por cierto

  4. IMO, Greg taylor has been in excellent form this season…..then along comes Bernabei ! Ange`s piece (0n CQN) on the young Argentinian shows our strength in that area and will ensure 100% commitment from both players. Likewise, Anthony Ralston and Juranovic on the other side create a similar situation. Siegrist and Hart? Possible another `little in it` situation. More of that all over the pitch would greatly lessen the likelihood of over-use injuries without weakening the team.

We have already been excellent on occasions this season and I feel, with Ange, there is plenty more to come.

    Golf day so…

    Cheerio for now.

  5. Sorry, it wasn’t my 1st League Cup Final. That was in 1964, aged 9 when Forrest scored twice to win it 2-1, por cierto

We had already beaten Rangers 2-1 in the 1965 LC final. John Hughes netted 2 first-half penalties and Rangers grabbed a last minute consolation.

My first LC final after attending my first SC final earlier in the year v Dunfermline.

I did wonder! I know James Forrest has played for years but didn’t think he was a round in 1964!!

Not a problem. I admit that when I contemplate our early cup finals under Mr Stein I often have to think hard about years and results, especially v Rangers as there were 4 plus 1 replay up to 1969.

  11. It was Hugh Phillips of Wishaw who awarded Celtic 2 first-half penalties v Rangers in the 1965 LC final. This was the final when Gers thugs invaded the pitch during Celtic’s lap of honour, ending the practice for decades to come.

Phillips got most of the cup finals in the early 60s and was a great referee.

  12. GUINNESS

I remember back in the mid 90s my local had a Guinness Promotion night. A blonde bombshell dressed in black mini-dress, high heels and a Guinness sash handed out free pints.

After a while she did a wee promotional speech with a brief product history and details of worldwide pints sold etc. She then asked for any questions. Nobody was forthcoming so I decided to help her out by raising my hand.

“Yes sir?” she smiled in obvious relief.

“I’ve often wondered,” I began. “Why does Guinness make yer shite black?”

Once the laughing had died down, the lady responded with, “I suggest you see a doctor.”

The problem is, we don’t seem to have any academy players good enough to even get on the bench.

I would do a list for all the times we lost, but that is bloody heart-breaking how often we didnt turn up.

An old pal had a theory, that Jock and players didt take it seriously enough going into the 70s unless it was against the huns.
