Uefa compliance officer set for SFA next week

618

A Uefa compliance officer will visit the Scottish FA early next week after European football’s governing body were asked to look into what was happening inside Scottish football by people within the German game.  Scottish football has been rocked by allegations of improper registration of players for over a month now.  The SFA recently concluded an inquiry into Rangers without reference to the allegations while the Scottish Premier League have announced an inquiry, but indicate it will not report anytime soon.

Although the allegations have consequences beyond the SPL, including international and European football, the SFA have failed to actively address concerns which could see 12 years of football results rewritten, prompting interest from Uefa.

  6. I see our ol’ mucker has been keeping in touch with Lenny and the bhoys:

Talk is cheap: Larsson hits back at accusations from Hateley and Burley of Celtic’s title being ‘tainted’

Henrik Larsson has rubbished talk of a Celtic title triumph being tainted by the turmoil at Rangers.

The Parkhead legend spoke out after Mark Hateley and former team-mate Craig Burley claimed the financial meltdown at Ibrox will tarnish the achievement of the champions elect.

A close friend of the Celtic management team of Neil Lennon, Johan Mjallby and Alan Thompson, Larsson scored 240 goals in seven years in Glasgow, winning four SPL titles before quitting in 2004.

On the defence: Henrik Larsson (centre) with Alan Thompson (right) and Chris Sutton

And he insists any team that wins the title has earned the right to be recognised as the best in the country.

‘I think it’s only people on the other side who will say things like that about winning the title,’ he told Sportsmail.

‘It’s not Lenny’s fault what has happened at Rangers. He can’t do anything about it.

‘There is nothing to worry about because, in the end, the trophy will say it’s another league title for Celtic — nothing else.

‘That’s all that matters. You can only do your own job, you can’t do anything more.

‘Anyone who says anything else is not worth worrying about and I don’t think Lenny, Johan or Thommo will be bothered about what anyone else says. If you win a title, you are the best team in the country.’

Old pals: Neil Lennon and Larsson celebrate winning the 2004 SPL title

Now preparing for a new season as manager of Swedish Second Division side BOIS Landskrona, Larsson speaks regularly to Lennon and Mjallby by phone and pays close attention to the fortunes of a club where he remains the second highest all-time goalscorer.

Scorer of a hat-trick against Kilmarnock in the 2001 League Cup Final which set up a Martin O’Neill Treble, Larsson admits he would love to see his old colleagues win their first trophy of the season on Sunday en route to a potential clean sweep.

‘To win the Treble would be fantastic,’ he said. ‘Lenny is still a new manager and I would be delighted for all of them, because they are my old friends. They’ve done it as players and if they can win them all as coaches, as well, then that’s good.

‘All three of them know what it takes to play for Celtic and they will remind the players how important every final is and what’s needed.

‘It’s difficult to win everything — it takes a team that understands the game and wants to win things.

‘That’s what’s important first and foremost. Everybody has to work hard to do their part. I see that in the Celtic team now.’

Treble yell: Georgios Samaras helps Celtic breeze into the last four of the Scottish Cup, scoring in the 4-0 rout of Dundee United

Larsson’s hat-trick in a national final came despite a red card for strike partner Chris Sutton after an hour.

‘I don’t remember much of the day itself because it was so long ago,’ he added.

‘That was the game where I ran a long way and dragged the ball past Gordon Marshall, I think. That’s my main memory.’

Winning the League Cup as the first part of a Treble would mark a remarkable turnaround from the dark days of November when Rangers were runaway league leaders and Lennon was fighting for his job.

In touch with Mjallby throughout, however, Larsson insists he never detected any hint of panic or fear from his old mates.

‘I don’t think it was ever the case that Lenny was fighting for his job,’ he insisted. ‘He has the drive to win and he has never been a character who has been stressed by anything.

‘Part of being a manager is recognising the situation around you at all times, and Lenny is clever enough to do that.

‘Remember, he has Johan next to him as well — and he’s never been known to stress out about anything. There is a lot of experience there and that’s why I don’t think they were ever too worried.’

As ranjurz minded peepul slip into civil war, it’s worth noting that Minty’s interview either displaced or minimised NFL’s appearance at court. what did we learn from the Wrigleyesque one? he was ‘duped’ by Whyte. A strange choice of word, ‘duped’ doesn’t mean conned, hoaxed, lied to, or, defrauded by. Duped is most akin to betrayal. Minty is trying to align himself with the majority of ranjurz fans, ‘…I’m just like you, a sucker, I thought he was like us, a fan, I believed him because it would have been disloyal to question him’

The fact that the Board warned, in the strongest possible terms, that Whyte may not have the wherewithal to buy a curly-wurly, was ignored by both Minty and the bank. they needed to move ranjurz on.

Minty and Whyte share a common back-story, young entrepreneurs who loved making money and who wanted to ‘contribute’

He did when he backed the ill-fated Sunday Scot newspaper. “When it went bust I could have left everyone high and dry. I paid everybody. A lot of people go bust one week and start up again the next. That’s morally wrong. Pay the price.”

Business isn’t just about money. It’s about reputation. Someone told him recently he needed to get a think-tank into the business to get costs down. “I don’t think like that. If my profit goes up or down 10% and I treat people fairly that’s more important to me.” That loyalty extends from his workforce to his country. “I think if you are a wealthy Scot you should live in Scotland and pay tax.”

That’s important to him? “Bloody right,” he retorts. He is not then, one of those wealthy businessmen who whinges about paying their dues. “I pay a lot of tax. I’m happy to pay. I don’t mind sharing that way.”

If it turns out that there were no letters that could constitute a contract then HMRC do not have a case. The fact they are pursuing one suggests that there are.

These had to be submitted to the SFA/SPL when players were registered if not the game is a bogey.

Of course we have thought that as recently as last season when we thought Bougherra and Diouf would get the book thrown at them but the good OLD SFA did what they always do, interpret the rules in such a way that little damage is done to Rangers. There might have been a chance that even the new SFA would have covered up the EBT fallout, such is its potential scope, but that potential is becoming clear beyond our borders, so a cover up is not going be possible.

What if one team has a better seeding and is guaranteed entry to the group stage and the other…

See where I’m going with this?

    ——————————————–

My view is that the pursuit of CL money has been a major factor in the corruption of our game. Rangers could see Celtic disappearing over the financial horizon in 2007 but rather than accept their lot and living without CL money they went into debt to get at it. (The go on about bringing their debt down to £18M by 2010 but ignore it was £6M in 2006.)

So their debt rises and as was shown this year by their failure to qualify for CL or EL, without that income they were in deep doo doo. So they HAD to win and if we were making a go at competing, honest mistakes multiplied as the rot set in to make sure they got a bite at the CL.

The thing about the CL is the cost of qualifying is so high, it only takes one failure over three seasons to lose rather than make money. So to discourage Scottish clubs overstretching, reduce the prize by sharing some of it amongst the other clubs who do not qualify. That still leaves enough CL money to aid qualification but also stops the gap between the regular qualifier becoming so large the domestic competition is no longer competitive.

The decision Celtic need to make is that without Rangers as our domestic benchmark, do we settle for just getting to the UEFA start line up or do we aim to qualify for at least the group stages of the EL?

Although we got in by the back door, we were unlucky not to go further and I think our benchmark should be to be good enough to top EL groups and if that impoves the chances of getting into a CL group then pure dead brill.
