Uefa deliver Lisbon Lions Dividend

475

Yesterday Uefa announced a series of revisions to the Champions League from the start of season 2018-19.

The headline initiative, which was trailed in the media for some weeks, is that the top four qualifying nations are guaranteed four entrants in the group stage. At the moment the top three nations are guaranteed three entrants each, with a fourth team entering the tournament at the play-off round. The fourth placed nation is guaranteed two in the groups, with one more team in the play-off round.

In effect, all this means is that Italy gets one more team in the tournament, while the likes of Tottenham don’t need to go through the anxiety of a play of qualifying, even if the outcome is pretty much inevitable.

How teams earn coefficient points, and how they earn money are both changing, with Celtic standing to gain more than any other team in Europe. At the moment part of each teams’ coefficient is made up of an average of their nations’ entrants over the previous five years.

This penalises Celtic more than any other team in Europe. No other country has one team in the Champions League group stage, while all other teams failed to qualify for all group stages over the previous five years. From 2018 coefficients will no longer be dependent on the performance of other teams from your national association.

There’s also a Lisbon Lions Dividend. Teams who have won the European Cup will earn four monetary coefficient points. If they have won the Champions League within the previous five years, the bonus will be 12 points, and if they were European champions earlier in the Champions League era, the bonus will be 8 points.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lisbon, it is astonishing that the achievement of those men is still bringing benefits to Celtic in ways no one could have dreamt of back then. I’ve said it before, but it’s impossible to overestimate what they did for Celtic. Without them, we would have been as relevant to Scottish football as Hibs.

Fair enough, you must be younger than you sound , perhaps. I remember dumping OLHS out of the Scottish 2-0 on the red blaize park, now an Asda and the lad who scored the two goals signed S forms for Celtic later that week.

Happy days. Time to get my ironing done, happy days?

  2. Messi has scored four more goals in his 10 games against Osasuna than they have managed in their 15 league games this season.

  3. Football is not about sport in the true sense of the word.

It is about money which is why rich men are involved.

They will alter the landscape to maximize profit from their investment.

Despite our history and huge support we are in a perilous position due to being in a small television market as are so many other former European greats.

This is a slippery slope as the emotional investment of many will not be replicated by future generations.

Mighty franchises like the NFL in America are losing the younger generation to the new forms of competition in the new media landscape.

Couldn’t agree more. 67 was a great year for music. Whether the younger generations would appreciate much of it, of course, is an ecumenical matter, as someone was wont to say.

  5. I see mention of Our Lady’s high school, m’well?

At least 2 Lisbon lions attended I think – Cesar and Bobby Murdoch.

Did any other celts go there?

Watching HUN TV. Pathetic commentary. Hearts doing an Aberdeen and not turning up. Thinking they are playing against the old huns. Newco Huns 1 up. How bad are the others when this shower can do that?

That is the real problem for these teams. they are playing against guys no better than themselves but because of the smoke and mirrors act by the media etc they still think it’s oldco.

What does GRACE have to do with a Cellic team on the pitch ?

*about the same as Aiden McAnespie but the punters loved it.

The latest winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature Dylan described how a lot of his contemporaries in the early 1960s were trying to write topical songs based on stories they may have heard in the papers.

Dylan felt most of the resulting songs were quite tame; they lacked power and emotion. By contrast, Dylan found a better source of inspiration in the songs The Clancys were singing.

He wrote: “What I was hearing pretty regularly, though, were rebellion songs, and those really moved me. The Clancy Brothers — Tom, Paddy and Liam — and their buddy Tommy Makem sang them all the time.

He not only liked the powerful melodies and the rebel themes, he was also influenced by the structure and storytelling techniques. He later incorporated some of those techniques in his own songs.

Love to see someone do Garner. Total hun scumbag in the mould of so many who played for the dead club through the years, a perfect fit.

  13. Yeah the other clubs should be embarrassed with the attempts against the newco, first season in top flight and winning, I never expect anything from anyone in this country but their fans must be raging, newco are poor as any bottom six team but the lies have got to the other teams. sevco have a perfect storm for third, herts new manager and dons have a hun manager so they will finish second and give sfa and uefa a very hard decision to make, that is if they dont go bust first.

Glad Cqn wasn’t about when they tried to make us remove the Tricolour from our stadium. What next I wonder?

*It makes me laugh when I read about “oh I used tae sing them as a bhoy but now I’m boring and cannae drink as much so I frown on them.

See when they were singing them it was still being frowned on, it was akin tae the huns no signing ben afflecks and us flying the tricolour, any stick tae beat us with.

We don’t sing songs of hate, our are songs of freedom.

I stood in the enclosure at the national stadium during the Dixie hat trick cup final and heard a punter with a traditional Irish name who also went tae the same school as me moaning about the punters in the Celtic end singing the rebs, “I hate that, there’s nae need for them”. This was 1972 and big Jock didnae storm intae the crowd either.

I rarely listen to or sing tae them now but that disnae mean that others shouldnae. As for not showing us up in a good light, who cares we’re not going anywhere soon. If it urinates off the huns well all the better.

  17. I’ve read through some of the posts pro and anti Rebel songs at Celtic matches whatever your view is that’s fair enough.

KevJ seemed to make the point earlier that Rebel songs were a thing of the past, others seem okay with ‘older’ type tunes, the late Dermot O’Brien and The Clubmen.

    Fair enough.

For some this isn’t just about history.

The following is an small extract from a current Statement issued by prisoners in the 6 Counties. It refers to the seizure of CDs and the Governor’s response…

He goes on to outline the songs with which NIPs has taken issue these include:

“The Fields of Athenry, a folk song used by some to link it to nationalism and terrorist groupings.”

“The Rose of Allendale” which was described in the same terms as The Fields of Athenry, and also:

“The Craic was Ninety in the Isle of Man”, “Muirsheen Durkin”, “Easy and Slow”, “The Bramble and the Rose”, “Grace”, “A Place in the Chair” and “The Wests Awake”. He then notes that these examples came from a ‘cursory search’ but other such examples of “Republican (Songs) which glorify terrorism past and present can be found. “

The statement describes other behaviours like denial of access of Irish language teachers and removal of signs written in Irish.

It ends..’.NIPs remains a bastion of the Orange State.’

NIPs = Northern Ireland Prison Service.

    Hamilton Tim,

Apologies for the late reply, pesky work called.

When I mentioned detrimental, I was mainly referring to image. Will singing about the Provos help attract the new generation of Celtic supporters. Will it help attract and retain players / managers. Will it help attract sponsors.?

    IMO the answer is no.

Does it make many Celtic supporters uncomfortable, ? Yes.

Do we get embarrassed hearing it when watching in mixed company. Often.

Is it compatible with a progressive, multi faith ( and none) multi cultural, multi racial society in 2016.

We will never be rid of the “old firm ” label if we are seen as the other side of the coin. And to many non Celtic fans hearing these songs, that’s exactly what they think.

I love a good sing song in the Gallowgate after games. If you don’t like it, then don’t go. But I remain convinced that a football match is not the time or the place.

it’s time to move on, and embrace our future as an all inclusive club, that is truly open to all.

    ——-

    Sorry just back on.

If we truly are a club open to all does that include those who choose to sing Irish Republican songs mate?

Last night there were thousands singing some of these songs.

  20. At the risk of being labelled a HUN, or worse.

Is it not time to remove the green blinkers and admit that THEY might not be as bad as many of us wish THEY were?

Tend not to sing the rebs much myself, sometimes hear them on the bus going to Celtic Park.
