Ultimate test. Don’t stoop to their level

225

Let’s not be fooled by Barcelona’s home defeat to Alaves on Saturday. If they again rest Messi, Suarez, Iniesta and Jordi Alba, while contriving to miss the target with multiple chances from inside 10 yards, that result might stand as a guide, but I suspect we’ll see Leo, Luis, Andres and co. tonight. With a point to prove.

On the positive side, we’ve played away 26 games in the Champions League proper and avoided defeat only twice, including a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou. Barcelona also took until added time before scoring a winner against us there four years ago. They are formidable, but we appear to perform better when we know the enormity of the job.

We were back at Camp Nou for game six of the group stage in 2013. It was a dead rubber for Celtic and a must-win game for Barca. It did not go well. That experience is a marker for what can go wrong when you play one of the best teams ever to kick a spherical object.

When Brendan Rodgers perused our Champions League fixtures for opportunities to pick up points, he’ll not have invested too much hope in tonight’s game, but it will serve as the ultimate test for a group of players who look more and more like an impressive team with each passing week.

Let’s enjoy it.

Whoever thought that embarrassing yourself with a ludicrous statement was a wise response to a destabilising defeat should be told to walk away from the keyboard. Yesterday’s statement from across the city was cringe-worthy. Appealing to the lowest common denominator is easy, but you play to an ever-decreasing audience.

The alarm signs for Project Newco Rangers are blaring loud.  It will not end well.

Celtic’s response reads like they were listening to the Champions League anthem when writing it.  You don’t win a fight with an opponent who has nothing to lose. Don’t stoop to their level, it only contaminates you.  There will be more nonsense before the Project ends.  It won’t be pretty, but try to enjoy this spectacle too.

Any advice? Subway to get there, eg?

Certainly AVOID the Subway – only stop near the ground is at the wrong end, and sure to be filled with unsavouries.

Canny recommend the tube, mate. Did it once.

If there are a few of you, take a taxi. VOGUEPUNTER might be able to help wi that.

If yer on yer own, tube it is,and scarf in pocket.

  11. We can’t lose tonight even if we get beat, partication is the prize for us this season.Six unparallelled lessons for Brendan, his assistants and our players that will improve us more that six hundred games domestically. And as a bonus we get a huge cash windfall, about equal to what GASL’s kids are going to lose out on when the warchest is located. It’s all good.

I am stress free about tonight and that’s a great way to watch a game, totally relaxed. The nailbiting nights have passed, thank kcuf after the last 25 minutes against Hapoel. We may take a beating, and i’m not saying i’d enjoy that, but Barca have gave pastings to better teams than we are at this time so it’d be no shock or embarrassment.I don’t think we will, though.

I reckon we’ll see Gamboa start tonight, him and Kieran on the flanks gives us plenty of pace that could be very useful both defending and attacking. On our previous visits to the Nou Camp attacking has been a rare commodity but I think tonight we’ll see more forays into Barca territory than before, they will still have more possession but with our qualities and style we will venture forward more times than in preceding matches with them.Should actually be a good game to watch.

Anywho,we’re where we want and deserve to be.Time for tims to take pleasure in our CL football and finance endowment. Both should enable us to appear in the CL again next year and keep making our domestic opponents look like dummies.

    In Bendan we trust.

  12. BMCUW,

Thanks for that, hope you enjoy the game if you are able to tune in regardless of the outcome.

  13. reminds me of this…

I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.

    George Bernard Shaw

  14. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Always a risk to change things, but I think we have to go with five at the back. Slightly risky also throwing Gamboa in, although less so as a wing-back than an orthodox right-back in a four.

Someone therefore has to drop out. Probably Forrest. So a front two of Dembele and Sinclair.

These two will have to work hard, going wide when Barca are attacking down their side and coming in central when the ball is down the other side to close off Pique and Mascherano.

Rogic might have to be our central attacker when we break, unless one of the wing-backs can make up the three.

Substitutions will be crucial as legs (and minds!) tire. Wouldn’t be surprised to see McGregor, Armstrong and maybe Ciftci on at some point.

Oh, and try to keep the ball when we do get it!

    C’mon the hoops!

I did have doubts about the subway. Staying at Great Western Road so will probably get cab. Only thing that’s really bothering me is my 17yo boy wants to go…after going in Dingwall on Saturday…Would rather he didn’t!

Will be meeting folks before the game to liven up a bit, but the tips are good – what I had in mind but nice to know I was on the right track.

I think the universal response on here to Celtic’s statement has been positive.

I might have missed a post or ten,so happy to be corrected.

  26. I’m just going to enjoy the night. We’re back at the top table. OK we may only end up with a point or two but for us realistically it’s just about participating in the CL. We’re only making up the numbers here.

I’m reasonably confident that we’ll not be embarrassed by our teams performance which was not the case for the past few seasons.

I’m just perusing the official Celtic website. What a mess it is. Unnavigatable! (Is that even a word?)

Can anyone direct me to where you see our scoring charts for the season so far? I can’t find it anywhere!
