UnCommons Moneyball gem

857

Someone made the point to me over the weekend, 30 goals, and counting, from midfield, rivals 53 from Henrik Larsson as a central striker.  It is an unnecessary burden to compare Kris Commons to Celtic’s greatest player in four decades, even Henrik couldn’t compare to the memory of Henrik, but the history books will show for decades to come, Kris Commons is a rare gem, a Celtic player for the ages.

He’s the definition of a Moneyball player, he’s a great multiple Player of the Year and he’s ours.

Enjoy watching him.

Issue 20 of CQN Magazine, CQLisboN is out and enjoying great reviews. You can check it out here, for free, now….

Awe Naw. You may well be right I dont have enough knowledge to know what contracts are higher or lower than the previous ones. However, following that path in my opinion would eventualy lead to non qualification of the CL as over time the quality of player we had at the club would reduce in line with the reduction in contracts and the CL income would be lost to the club that seems a strange plan I think it much more likely that PL trys to strike a balance.H.H.

It’s difficult to agree with you when your first two sentences completely contradict one another.

I agree with the gist of what you are saying. Which is making a handsome profit during these trying times will ensure that Celtic dont go to the wall.

why is it everyone and their granny is saying celtic are downsizing and offering players less than their worth?

No idea, it’s a notion that I thought started with Ledley and Samaras, where it was actually described as a “being forced to take a pay cut”

I see you are suggesting that Kris Commons wants Gary Hooper to return. I think we have more chance of that than signing Snodgrass. As I’ve said on here before, I would welcome him. He knows the way to goal and he knows Celtic. Hope it happens.

Seville67, i think the outlook is short sighted, can’t get my head around £29 per game. With deidco gone surely its about bums on seats & we do pay more for season books than those in Germany & Spain so imagination is needed from the Club. With peripheral spend maybe if they offered a season book for a certain price say £300 then European package (hopefully) for another £100 whether its CL or EL would this entice more people to take up season books?

    Mourinho and Herrerra ?

Atletico Madrid 0 ——Chelsea 0 produced a fabulous argument on Italian tele . Debate revolved round whether Mourinho played cattenacio like Herrera . Decision was he didnt – pundits thought it wasnt tactically/technically developed enough to merit being called cattenachio , description they settled for was —anti football.

Interesting man Herrera ———son of an exiled Spanish anarchist . His catennacio system was a version of a system called ——Verrou ( door bolt ) —— a system associated with Karl Rappan

That article by James Forrest highlights something that has been bugging me this past week – the guff in the MSM about Sevco having “lost” £70 million. They haven’t LOST £70m – they have SPENT £70m.

Do these guys not realise there are actually COSTS involved in running a football club?

In the comments after the article, James reckons £17m just to keep the lights on and the grass cut. Over two years that’s £34m – half the total which has been “lost”. Playing budget is what – £7m? Add another million for the management team, and that’s £16m over two years. Now you are already up to £50m.

Their problem is that the old club had a “relaxed” attitude about spending their OWN money – they always preferred to spend other people’s money. Bank debt, MIH bail-outs, equity “investments”, tax dodges, etc. Around £250m over fifteen years.

So there is no “lost” £70m – only a difficulty in coming to terms with the idea of actually paying for things yourself.

Yes, spot on. They spend more than they bring in. A recipe for disaster for the new club. Ibrox is a (money) pit that they can’t afford.

celtic are not downsizing cause players are leaving for more, they are upgrading their income

celtic are working within market forces, out with their control anything other than that = death

Also has anyone spotted Pat Nevin in there yet?

Someone pulled up BRTH yesterday morning about this and he flatted denied that Nevin made an appearance. Had a wee laugh to myself at that and when I saw BRTH at the game I asked him if he had noticed Nevin in the mag? He’s been looking hard ever since but hasn’t found him!

Buy Yup double digit million pound profits will stave off imminent death.

Which begs the question. How do the other Scottish clubs manage it with little or no profit Survival that is.

  19. if your on 20k a week and somebody is daft enough to offer you 40k a week you’ve just upgraded your income.

celtic have not downsized in this instant as the player is not offered lower than 20k.

some people on here are saying terms offered are now lower than current contact, with no evidence, so I know for a fact celtic have offered every player that is willing to stay increased terms

It means getting a better deal than Celtic are prepared to offer them. They might even move on for less than they are on just now but more than we are prepared to offer. It’s important to protect those double digit profits so that we can barely survive.

I understand ….unfortunately the sentence reads as if CFC are upgrading their income

    Thanks for the clarification

However , if CFC are offering reduced contracts ..they must be downsizing

  25. I don’t know how many times I’ve read on here people slagging off Celtic for things “They are going to do”. Celtic sold Hoops & Victor last year because both of them made it clear they wanted to go. At that stage its either sell or let them run down their contracts and Celtic did the sensible prudent thing. Doing the sensible prudent thing is good, thats why we’re Champions.
