Uncontained post-match anger? Tune into on SkySports

156

Kris Boyd’s post-match tirade on Sunday was arresting.  He was angry and, just after fulltime, his thoughts tumbled out in an unstructured manner.  You seldom see such vociferous anger on television outside of the drama genre.  I don’t recall ever seeing it from a sports presenter.

Not long after getting home from such an emphatic victory, this was like sugar on the doughnut to complete the afternoon’s entertainment.  Later on, I felt a bit guilty. Boyd wasn’t right in being so forthright and it wasn’t right for me to enjoy the show.

When a SkySports professional displays uncontained anger, it normalises this behaviour.  Others feel permitted to get angry, some may even think that anger is appropriate and that they are obliged to get angry to show how much they care.

Later on Sunday, when the Newco players returned to Ibrox, they were met by a very angry mob.  Board members who have put millions of pounds into the club, players who have to motivate themselves for the coming games, and a manager who is sitting on a new gold-plated contract, were roundly abused.

As a Celtic fan, it is clear how unproductive this is.  Celtic cannot do as much damage to Newco as angry and uncontained Newco ‘fans’.

Whatsit to us?  You and I can acknowledge this is not normal, it is not healthy and it is not an example to us, whenever/if ever we inevitably drop from our run of trebles and titles.  It is not Celtic, it is not even the Rangers I remember from the magnificent early 80s [the 70s was another era], it is a new and ugly phenomenon [Neil Lennon might suggest it’s not absolutely new].

Kris Boyd possibly doesn’t know better.  His parting line on the programme, about his wife having a lot to deal with that night, was clearly an innocent joke at his own expense.  But the joke formed in Kris’s head, as another thought formed in mine, that uncontained male anger has very ugly consequences in a domestic environment.  If you whip up hundreds of thousands of football fans, someone, somewhere, will pay a price.

If uncontained anger about football is your thing, you will be able to fill your boots most weeks.  It is ugly, and anyone who thinks it is acceptable needs to have a look at themself.

Very peculiar Boyd has carved himself this role as the voice of Scottish footfall for Sky. He is very rarely insightful and very often incoherent.

he reminds me of Alex re when he used to partner Kevin’s on Clyde.

Contrast and compare with the wit, intelligence and insightfulness of Sutton . Fot my money, the best pundit on the TV att he moment

    ——————————————————————-

Agree to a certain extent with you, but the bar on pundits and insightful comments is on the floor.

Have you ever had the misfortune to watch MOTD with Alan Shearer? He has never, ever said anything of any interest never mind insight, and this guy is supposedly one of the highest earners in the BBC, I’m glad I don’t pay for the TV license!

—-Rangers have confirmed they will play at Ibrox for the first time this season in the 21 September Scottish League Cup tie with Dundee – but with the Copland Stand closed.

Delays to materials arriving meant work on the stand was held up and Rangers played four home games at nearby Hampden Park.

Chairman John Bennett had said prior to the quarter-final cup draw that Rangers were aiming to be back in Ibrox for the 28 September Premiership meeting with Hibernian.

“Excluding the Copland Stand, where final concourse and seating works are ongoing, all areas of our home will be open for this match,” Rangers said on their website.

“Season ticket holders from the Copland Stand will be offered an exclusive window to purchase seating elsewhere.”—————–

  3. When have you ever seen a pro Celtic pundit go on a rant like Kris Boyd on Sunday. I have saw somewhat similar Rants from Kenny Miller, Souness and McCoist but none matched Boyds meltdown.

Our much mallinded Board at one time entered into Joint Sponsorship deals with Rangers. However our board recognised that we were doing all the hard work and decided to break off the arrangements.

At the same time we brought an end to the term Old Firm. We needed to distance our selves from Rangers. We were not half of anything.

We have since commercially outperformed them in shirt sponsorship, kit partners, merchandise and all other operations.

We are not 2 sides of the same coin, we are not partners in anything

I doubt if Sevco ever beat us again then you would never see a Pro Celtic pundit have a rant like Boyd

So they have 18 days to grow grass in front of that stand. Hope they have ordered the quick matting turf rolls and not a box of seeds 🫣

Smart enough tactics from R2ngers leadership.

League cup tie unlikely to sell out – so open 3 sides.

Create the impression they’re coming home a week earlier than previously communicated.

Take some heat out of the situation without actually committing to being fully open for business on 28 September or (more crucially) 03 October.

    Great Post.

I used to go on the Young Street bus which started up and round the corner from The Keys.

Also attended 6pm Mass on a Sunday.

Wishy now a shadow of its former self.

I was at Duke Street 61 and 62, then Barony St (with Farmer Kelly) in 63 and then Parson Street 64 and 65.

  8. Sevco have taken the opportunity to play a low key game (with all due respect to Dundee) at a partially completed Ibrox.

Access and egress will be mpacted at that end.

This is a world of difference from a safe secure 4 sided stadium, with all access and egress routes operational

Man United execs lining up to voice their support of Erik Ten Hag.

I wonder if he kept his house in Amsterdam when he moved to England?

  10. I see That souness is the new man to go to for his thoughts . I would have thought being a Liverpool legend he would have had a spot to do down there .

I remember the Young St bus. We used to head over there on the few times our bus would break down:))) I haven’t been home in about 12 years…not a very good son at times((( I have heard that Wishy has went downhill. It was never the most beautiful of places but still a lot of character to it. I talked to my wee ma yesterday and she told me that some wee neds set fire to the St. Ignatius tea room. She used to be in there every morning serving tea to the folks after mass. Sad times.

  14. Turkeybhoy agree about Tavpen, their best player for the last few years, feel sorry for him that he didn’t escape in the transfer window. Past his best so nothing for us to worry about. Boydchenko can keep us laughing for a while with his hun tears.

  15. Paul 67,

I rather enjoyed Boyd’s rant. Tee hee.

let me give an idle spulative punt, with my ;ittle experiences of construction projects and financing them.

THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO STAY AT HAMPDEN.

they are losing money there, renting a place they cannot fill.

they reported 45,000 attendance for the League cup game, they were lucky if there was 30,000 in the ground.

imho, the steel and concrete pre casts are the easier part of the construction phases. the electrical, plumbing, access to lift shafts and platforms, that is far more complicated.

and all needing safety certification to allow occupancy.

8,000 bearz not allowed into the copland stand, ………. lets see how long they are out for.

ps, the pitch needs relaid in front of the copland AND the main stand, not easy either as the days get shorter.

i wonder what they will do for away fans coming from europe, spurs will be a big test.

  17. Is Dermot Desmond the most successful majority shareholder board member of a club in the UK?

A is that what he is?

    B is that a thing?

C I’m not sure if they had such things in the Fergie man u times and the great Liverpool teams

He must be the most successful something cos we’ve won ship loads and may well continue for the next 2-3 years minimum.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I pretty much agree with you. Boyd is just very poor at what he does and gets too much money for it. Having said that, Souness is a thug in a suit and Shearer is just stupid.

  19. The last time we drew Swiss opposition and also played Zagreb and Slovan Bratislava in the same competition was 61 years ago in 63/4. We disposed of all 3 and went on to lose 4-3 on aggregate to MTK Budapest in the semifinal. After we had won the first leg 3-0. I would settle for the semi final this year.

  20. For all kinds of reasons we could really do with another 10-12 coef points this season. On top of the 6 we already have. 3 wins and 3 draws plus another win in the last 16 playoff would really help.

1 reason being to ensure we get seeded through next years playoffs for champions we will need around 42 points minimum. Another because Scotland is set to lose a lot more this and next year as rangers decent run pre Covid comes off as does our run to last 32 which included beating Lazio etc.
