Underestimating teams in August, win Walfrid hospitality tomorrow

923

You and I have enough recent experience to know teams we’ve never heard of, or know little about, cannot be underestimated when it comes to European football.  We should expect, and will get, a very difficult game tomorrow.

The good news is that Hapoel Beer Shiva have lost goals in three consecutive matches after a solid defensive run which saw them keep 8 clean sheets in 12 games.  But they scored four while conceding in two of those games, the only reversal coming at home to Ashdod in the League Cup last midweek.

They shut up shop away from home in their two earlier Champions League qualifying rounds at Sheriff in Moldova after a narrow 3-2 home win, they kept out Olympiakos before winning the return 1-0 in the last round.

Unlike in previous years, we are not facing a team midseason in the playoff round; Hapoel have had a few cup games but will not open their league season until Saturday.

Hospitality for 3 people at Celtic-Hapoel Beer Shiva at Walfrid Restaurant

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have given us three tickets for fantastic hospitality at the Walfrid Restaurant, before, during and after tomorrow’s night’s Champions League qualifier.  This is another money can’t buy opportunity for three people to watch Celtic in a hugely important game in sumptuous comfort.

Anyone can enter the competition, however, as this prize of so incredible, I’d like everyone who enters to donate a recommended £10 to the good work of the Celtic Foundation.

You can donate at this MyDonate page.

The Celtic Foundation work to improve Health, promote Equality, encourage Learning and tackle Poverty (H.E.L.P.) in Scotland, the rest of the UK and Ireland, and worldwide.  It’s your Foundation, you built and maintain its good work.

A few guidelines for the raffle:

Raffle closes at 21:00 BST TONIGHT, so there’s not a lot of time and I’m not expecting many entries.  You will not be entered into the competition if you donate or apply afterwards.

Enter with an email address you are going to check later tonight or early tomorrow, add a phone number, if you like.

You can enter two ways:

By making a recommended £10 donation to Celtic FC Foundation here.  Then email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with Walfrid in the subject line, to make sure I can get in touch with you.

Or

By emailing me the names of every Celtic shirt sponsor and official kit manufacturer.  Ever. To celticquicknews@gmail.com

One of the above will be pretty easy for most of us.  The other will be pretty difficult.  Do the easy one.

Great prize.  Only open for a few hours so there will be little competition.  Go for it!

Thank you, and thanks to Intelligent Car Leasing for supporting our fundraising efforts.

As one of the younger one’s here abouts, I assure you, you’re contribution to the Celtic is more appreciated than you realize and will never be forgotten.

Happy Birthday also to Didier Agathe. I had the pleasure shaking hands and chatting with him at the Glasgow airport baggage check. He then took the time to blether with my mum briefly, towering over her with a broad smile.

  11. During the “Fair” my uncle, who was from Halfway, took us down to Largs.

    This would be early 60s.

The Celtic team were milling around as we took our paseo.

Uncle Tom introduced me to John Fallon but I was awe struck and couldn’t utter a word.

    Nothing has changed.

    Many more happy birthdays John.

Dallas … it has been so hot here for the past month (about 30 degrees most days and humid … like we were in the tropics), even the lovely KT (who is a sun and heat loving australian) put the AC on! So, you know it had to be hot!

Tontine … by far the warmest summer here that I can recall. Mind you, around February, and after 3 months of subzero temperatures, I’m sure I will be pining for days like this! :)

  15. Didier Agathe was a neighbour of my parents when he was at Celtic. A lovely man. One Sunday, when we were visiting, we went to morning mass. It was the day after Celtic stuffed Rangers and when Didier and his lady emerged from the Cathedral, the assembled gathering burst into spontaneous applause.

LONDON — The top four European leagues are set to automatically qualify four teams each to the group stage of the Champions League from 2018-19, according to multiple sources.

UEFA’s executive committee is expected to approve the measure when it meets later this month, sources said, part of a set of changes to the European competition that will be implemented for the cycle between 2018-2021.

The club competition committee, led by Fernando Gomes of the Portuguese Football Federation, had been involved in tough negotiations for some six months with stakeholders, including a number of clubs from top leagues who threatened to boycott the Champions League if their demands were not met.

The additional guaranteed slots will be agreed as a compromise after UEFA was able to stand firm in denying many of those demands, as well as staving away the threat of a breakaway European Super League at least through 2021.

According to sources, the demands had included entry to European competition based on “historic merit” — a “parachute” for popular clubs such as Rangers who regularly fail to qualify on the pitch — as well as the possibility of European ties to be played at weekends so as to increase broadcast audiences, and the creation of a new entity — co-owned by UEFA and the clubs themselves — to run the Champions League.

Changes to the Champions League would put five more teams from top leagues directly into the group stage.

Based on the current UEFA country coefficient ranking, the four countries who would benefit directly from the measures are Spain, Germany, England and Italy. One team from France , Russia , Portugal and Scotland

Currently, the top three leagues qualify three teams directly to the group stage, with a fourth having to endure a two-legged playoff round. The fourth-ranked league enters two teams directly to the group stage, with a third into the playoff round.

The change would give the top four leagues five more guaranteed teams, for a full 50 percent of the 32 group-stage slots.

Leagues from other countries, including France in fifth and Russia in sixth, can move into the top four coefficients based on their clubs’ performances in European competition.

Happy Birthday to TOHG. Watched him from his first till last game. As I have said many a time he was a very good goalkeeper but also a very unlucky one.. He never ever,IIRC, made an error that he ‘got away’ with as they always seemed to result in a goal for the opposition. Yes.. The Original Holy Goalie but not The Luckiest Celtic Goalie!

*I was at a SC replay against the jambos one Wednesday night, a reported 70,000+ crowd, nae chance we were stuck between the Jungle and Celtic end and couldnae go any further.

The previous Saturday had seen a typical blood and thunder cup tie, which was held up for 9 minutes after only 2 minutes due to the huge crowd at the Celtic end, encroaching the park.

We were twice down, then took the lead only for the diets tae equalise with a sublime Willie Hamilton shot. Incidentally wee Wispy scored their opener and set up the equaliser, seemed tae enjoy them tae )).

The oul yin in goal didnae look too clever at the conceded goals nor did our twin centre half’s Billy and Cush

Each time we scored our fans invaded the park in celebration, not tae protect our team either )), nae public enquiry after this game either.

On the Wednesday night Cush was dropped and ironically wee ten thirty who had scored our first equaliser was replaced by Charlie Gallagher, yet Ronnie kept his place.

We won very comfortably with the wee mhan being magical, near the end with us 3 up and cruising Wispy lobbed the faither from practically the hauf way line, or so it seemed in a lanny filled haze, intae the Celtic end tae, the crowd just mumbled words along the line of “stupid oul bu88er” etc, no recriminations, no booing either.

I turned tae ma Carolina and said, I wonder if they would have been as accommodating if John Fallon had been in goal. A very unlucky goalie indeed.

Incidentally the deid team lost 2-3 at Brockville that night which put us in a good position for our first title in 12 years, in fact since the Big Mhan was captain.

If there are such Celtic supporters that think taking a Palestinean flag into Celtic Park is o.k. and cannot rationally see that it’s not, then congrats you’re not a Celtic fan, but a rebel without a clue, regardless of where you mutinously stand, you really are beyond redemption.

I’ll leave it at this – those of you who disagree with people waving the national flag of Palestine at CP tomorrow answer this:

If there was no danger of Celtic getting grief from UEFA over it would you care?

If your answer is no then I am afraid you are guilty of moral cowardice.

  21. Very Very Hooooopy Birthday Mr Fallon

Now Celtic, you have today announced prices for a game in the SPFL which is not included in all season tickets

Time Now to speak out for your own Fans, explain why £49 – this could be based on additional policing costs etc for the well behaved new visitors, their old reputation is following them according to increased Police costs for the visit ?

And let your own fans know the SPFL and Police are influencing this cost

And you believe it will be a first ever visit of this club and their fans, and where not prepared to accept these additional costs

Something along these lines will let your own fans know some reasoning – at very least

Or, come out and tell what the board really think of this game

And you can now take alone of your fans

    Not happy with this :-(

  22. RobertTressell

I will go a bit further and say that the only harm waving a Palestinian flag can do to the club is financial.

The bollix about damaging the clubs reputation is imo a hun lead propaganda campaign.

Who gives a feck what the suits at uefa think, who give a feck what the smsm thinks, and even less what the hun driven sfa and their ilk think.

Reputational Damage my arse, financial yes, but leave the other garbage out.

  23. An Teach Solais on

    Some cognitive dissonance on display.

What is the motive of those wishing to fly Palestinian flags tomorrow night. Are any of the Celtic players of Palestinian natioonality?

Are there better and more productive ways of expressing in a meaningful way support for the people of Palestine? Will waving flags have any influence on the policies of Netanyahu et al?

I think that we can all agree that the selective antagonism of UEFA in regard to flying the Palestinian flag – ostensibly because Palestine is not yet a full member of United Nations -is nonsensical but if we wish to compete in THEIR competition we have to abide by THEIR rules.

If you don’t like their rules put forward a motion to the AGM of CFC that Celtic should not compete in any UEFA competition.

Does a bird shit in it’s own nest? HH

  24. The old eyes are funny.

Much is missed because the sight fades, the world just seems to be moving faster and so on, but as i drove through Stirling today my eyes immediately spotted and honed in on a green shirt.

Out of all that was going on everywhere in front of me it was like a beacon that shone out and as i got closer the big 5 on the back became clearer and i thought……yip definitely a tim and then as i got a little closer i expected to see ‘in a row’ as the other text, but the bhoy had ‘Rodgers’ at the top and ‘to go’ at the bottom :)
