‘UNFORTUNATE,’ INSISTS SCALES

LIAM SCALES looked as though he would have preferred to be facing a firing squad rather than giving a live interview in the immediate aftermath of Celtic’s 4-1 mauling from VfB Stuttgart at Parkhead.

The hosts were dismantled by their Bundesliga opponents in a massively disappointing Europa League performance where the errors piled up at a fast and furious rate.

Like their team-mates, Scales and his central back-four colleague Auston Trusty, struggled to get to grips with a slick-moving German outfit who pounced on every mistake.

The Republic of Ireland international defender was put on the spot as he gave a terse and brief interview.

LOOK BACK IN ANGER…Bilal El Khannouss darts between Auston Trusty and Liam Scales before heading Stuttgart’s second goal behind the stranded Kasper Schmeichel.

Scales, speaking to TNT Sports, rattled through his answers as he said: “It was a tough game but we’ll go again next week. They’re a good side and they took their chances.

“I think we could have had a couple more, as well.

“We were unfortunate with the scoreline, but the performance wasn’t there.

“We are always disappointed when we concede goals.

“It’s definitely not going to derail our season.”

And with that Scales took off back to the dressing room.

Now interim boss Martin O’Neill has some massive decisions to make before the crucial Premiership encounter against Hibs at Parkhead on Sunday.
