THIS time last year, Giorgos Giakoumakis was still a bit of a mystery to Celtic fans.
The powerful Greek striker had been bought by Ange Postecoglou for £2.5million from Dutch club VVV-Venlo in August 2021, but the anticipated goal deluge from the Eredivisie’s top marksman the previous season hadn’t materialised.
Giakoumakis had scored only one goal at this stage of his Hoops career – in the 2-0 win over St Johnstone at Parkhead on October 23.
However, after knee surgery, the frontman returned with perfect timing while Kyogo Furuhashi was sidelined with a troublesome hamstring injury.
THE LAST HURRAH…Giorgos Giakoumakis thumps in Celtic’s second goal after David Turnbull’s shot had been pushed out by Kilmarnock keeper Sam Walker.
Giakoumakis scored his second Celtic goal in the 2-1 Scottish Cup win at Alloa on January 22 and added another 15 – including two hat-tricks – before the completion of the title-winning campaign.
The energetic frontman collected his ninth of the current crusade last night when he snapped up a rebound from Sam Walker after the Kilmarnock keeper had pushed away a low drive from David Turnbull.
The goal sealed a 2-0 Viaplay League Cup semi-final triumph to ensure a return to Hampden for the showpiece showdown on Sunday February 26.
But will Giakoumakis be there to play his part in another Celtic success? That’s the big question. In the meantime, let’s enjoy the Hampden goals from Giakoumakis and Daizen Maeda courtesy of the good folk at Celtic TV Unique Angle.
