United caught in good but fragile football trap

405

It could be a big weekend in the race for the Premiership with Celtic away to bottom club Dundee United tonight and Aberdeen at fifth placed Ross County on Sunday. The gap at the top is currently three points, with Celtic having a game in hand. Tonight’s result will give the league table a true look, at least until Sunday afternoon.

Those of us of a certain heritage cannot take a trip to Tannadice lightly. Despite seeing United relegated since their 80s peak, they were never a bad team. Even now, cut adrift at the foot of the table, they play far better football than any other team I can remember in that position.

The recent Dundee derby was a case in point. United had the lead and should have buried Dundee before the fragility which has stalked United this season caught up with them. Tonight’s game will present a different proposition. Unlike against Dundee, when they went looking to put the game to bed, United will be far more cautious against Celtic, who will have to do their usual shift against a packed defence.

Despite this, United are bottom for a reason. They’ve won two of 21 league games, are 11 points from the play-off spot and need to pull something spectacular out of the bag this month to avoid relegation.

Three points, please, Celtic.

I said it at the time a few years ago when Rednapp was interested in Forest reportedly for £6m that Ryan Fraser ( then at Aberdeen) was a better player. He went for £400k to Bournemouth I recall.

I see having helped Bournemouth in to Championship he has gone to Ipswich on loan – I suspect at 5’4”he won’t cut it in EPL. He’s 21 and I think better and now more experienced than Forest….

He’d be a great acquisition now although I suspect we’d need to pay £600k for him.

Sevco as part of the deal to get a licence was they had to pay all the old huns football debts, including the 250K fine.

They haven’t and they have no intention of weighing in.

They are theiving cheating scum and I hope the burn in hell for what they have done to our game.

  3. “A key document in the case was an updated profit and loss statement for Rangers operating company covering the period June 2015 to December 2015. Counsel for 802 Works had objected to this being considered as it was unaudited, however Sheriff Miller said that he had been assured by Rangers that the figures were accurate and said they showed a “significant improvement,” in the business’s financial position with half year losses down to around £500k. This, he said, had “weighed heavily in the balance,” in making his decision.”

Sounds to me like on Day 2 they presented an unaudited spreadsheet they made up the night before to claim that they are solvent. Most worrying thing is that the judge states he was “assured” and accepted this.

Aye a know that, you know that, and the dugs in the street know it, but a smart lawyer would bring it up if the judge is referring to the as RFC , that my point about these lawyers, they just don’t seem to cut the mustard when it comes to challenging thems, to me the all seem watered down, just a feeling I have.

I just love reading stuff like that, it makes me laugh until my sides ache.

Especially knowing there are so many stupid huns who will believe they can compete at the same financial level as us.

  6. I remember a winger we had in the late 50’s, early 60’s, called Alec Byrne.

At times a gifted footballer, at other times he would fall over the ball.

Yes – agree and that’s the tipping point where the strategy defeats itself.

Keep a good core and develop players around the core who either go online to bigger things or take their place in the core allowing sale of whoever they displace.

You don’t transform a 1m player in to a 10m player by winning the SPFL,

You need s team that can play with credit in Europe t o facilitate player growth.

I’d also suggest without the strong core and European football post Christmas you won’t attract potential players who can be developed for profit. Hence we got Carlton Cole and Nafir Cifcti this season.

A potential Wanyama, Forster, VVD wouldn’t join the current team.

Any notion that Simonovic can be developed beyond the value we have paid (£4-5m) is optimistic in the extreme. If Biton stays his value will go down. I think we could currently get £3m for him.. On a good day… Probably 31 Jan as window closes.

  8. You would get the daily reports on every one of thems court cases, and the lawyers company’s chasing this mob up for dough, get pissed all over by thems lawyers or the judge, look at today cRry on for instance, wifi company …feck off there’s no problem here, ……Chuckles, you have ti weigh in £50 grand up front before the case? A mean ffs, can you not see the pattern developing here, bent as an Arabs dagger, the lot of them.

  10. My friends in Celtic,

From a purely football perspective I will be sorry to see Anthony Stokes and James Forrest leave ( if that indeed is the case )

Both are young ( ish) and both still have the potential to fulfil their undoubted potential. Kev Jungle mentioned this the other day and I agree that Stokes could do for the Griff what Frank McGarvy did for Charlie Nicholas.

Anthony Stokes and Leigh Griffiths playing up front together would be the best combination in Scotland by a country mile. There is no valid reason why we cannot play two upfront in every domestic game.

Football should be entertaining, entertainiment is goals and goals make for good viewing.

Just look at the entertainment value in the two 3-3 games in the EPL. Yes the football purists cited poor defending and numerous mistakes but nevertheless it was entertaining.

If we are to remain in Scotland ( but not for long. ) ( Hopefully) then this must be the way forward.

Hail, Hail to all and especially to those supporters who will make the effort tonight .

Great thing is Stokes can still be a Celtic hero at Hibs if he helps consign Sevco to Championship football next season. Who else can we spare to bolster Hibs?

  13. TET,

However, if the bold Anthony goes to Hibs, and smashes in a few against sevco, he be doing himself a power of good

He has got a point to prove if he wants to pull the Celtic jersey on again.

    Stokesy hat-trick v Sevco…..Worth a bet.

  17. Stokes is not getting a game for one reason only, when he leaves the trading ground he forgets he’s a professional football player playing for Glasgow Celtic, and is one of the boys, doesent work that way, I know it, you know it, and he obviously doesent care, sorry that’s the truth like it or not.

  18. Cash and profit are clearly distinct and it is almost never possible to marry the two simplistically, much to the understandable frustration of the new business owner and lay accounts reader.

Where cash is paid up front, subscription based services for example, cash will nearly always be much greater than profit as the pre-paid subscriptions are not taken to the profit and loss account until the service is delivered.

In contrast where payment is on completion or credit terms given then cash can horribly tight as all the costs are incurred but delayed income. In this instance debt is natural, overdraft, term loan, invoice finance etc.

In a business where there are no meaningful credit terms given to customers (Season tickets are in advance and other income is per match) it is hard, though not impossible, to reconcile debt accruing significantly faster than losses. So losses for the 6 months of less then 500k in a period where borrowings are into the many millions (Ashley was paid off with more borrowing) is, as has been said, interesting. In absence of audited accounts I’d weight my assessment almost entirely on cash flow and debt, actual trend and forecast with explanations and not unaudited profit.

I guess not being listed with the requirements that come with it might turn out be serendipitous.

  20. Stokes is of those players who prefers his side loses if he’s not getting a game. He’s not alone either but the successful teams have as few of these guys as is possible.

His attitude is only okay if it leads him to outperform himself day in day out a la Ronaldo and it doesn’t so get rid.

  21. TD67

I know what you mean regarding the suspicion of them not giving their all, who would know, we just see judgements that seem at odds with the evidence, it would appear the cases they pesent are flimsy and weak.

It wouldn’t surprise me,and you know I think the club is right to expect players to represent them off the pitch also.

However Stokes was in an invidious predicament because of his friendship with Ryan,

He could hardly be expected not to attend a friends funeral but….

  23. Griff and Stokes have played together. Back when Griff first arrived.

Doesn’t happen often but I agree with you re Stokes. He isn’t professional

    Enough.

I suspect Stokes has been a prolific youth.. Wound up at Arsenal but lacked the vital pace required to be a prolific 1st team player at that level,

He came to Scotland a big fish in a wee pond at Falkirk and Hibs but at Celtic he could only do a job at domestic level.

Again not cut out to be a big fish in a big pond. I hope and think he’ll do well at Hibs. Right now that’s his level.

If he matures he will springboard back to being a Celtic player if he doesn’t he’ll be back at Falkirk.

No doubting his ability but also no doubting his ( poor) attitude.

  26. I just don’t get the bit with the judge on audited accounts, when they don’t have an auditor , to me just a case of thems telling the judges anything, and that’s it, judgement for Sevco, just can’t get my head round it, I suppose it kinda along the lines of a defender slapping a ball with his hand stopping a goal , and five officials never saw it?

  27. Stars

Aye, it couldn’t have been an easy decision for him, I doubt he would have had the same bother down south, it would have blown over pretty quickly, but in scotland,,,,unless you are the likes of Andy Gorum, you get a job writing colums in the press.

    Philboy,

you gave me a pleasurable jag then when talking about Alec Byrne- so many memories from that time to remember.

One faint memory of that time was a midweek game (friendly) against Real Madrid when Di Stefano played (was he about to retire?) then.

I well remember him giving a couple of heavy digs to Charlie Gallagher i think that night (who was another real fitba player ) as we were wont to call them then.

Thanks for a football comment -it makes such a difference to read something enjoyable on this site ,as lately the preoccupation with all things Hunnish on it i find massively depressing.

    Thanks again Philboy and HH.
