United caught in good but fragile football trap

405

It could be a big weekend in the race for the Premiership with Celtic away to bottom club Dundee United tonight and Aberdeen at fifth placed Ross County on Sunday. The gap at the top is currently three points, with Celtic having a game in hand. Tonight’s result will give the league table a true look, at least until Sunday afternoon.

Those of us of a certain heritage cannot take a trip to Tannadice lightly. Despite seeing United relegated since their 80s peak, they were never a bad team. Even now, cut adrift at the foot of the table, they play far better football than any other team I can remember in that position.

The recent Dundee derby was a case in point. United had the lead and should have buried Dundee before the fragility which has stalked United this season caught up with them. Tonight’s game will present a different proposition. Unlike against Dundee, when they went looking to put the game to bed, United will be far more cautious against Celtic, who will have to do their usual shift against a packed defence.

Despite this, United are bottom for a reason. They’ve won two of 21 league games, are 11 points from the play-off spot and need to pull something spectacular out of the bag this month to avoid relegation.

Three points, please, Celtic.

Last Year was a big year for me. I had my stomach surgically removed and took the opportunity to re-ass cess my life. I read wurx by the great thinkers (Plato, Aristotle Onassis,Hegel, Marx,Lenin, Malcolm X, Bono, Peter Robinson, Hitler) and fundamentally revised my whole philosophy. So from now on I’m voting ISIS

  2. Earlier mention of Harold Davis reminded me of the following.

In a game against a German side, Davis punched an opponent.

How did MSM of the day react?

Daily Express ran picture competition inviting readers to to suggest what Harold’s thoughts were as he struck opponent.

  8. In defence of Alec Byrne.

For younger readers Alec was a cultured winger who played football in the classic Celtic way. The people who followed Rangers regarded Celtic as a pretty team but they were a soft touch. Jock Stein recognised this and was determined to put a bit of steel into the team- and he did.

I was at the Real Madrid match and remember well how Celtic played – for the Blue and White trophy- and the crowd which was huge would not leave till the team came out and did a lap of honour, having lost 3-1. Such was the passion and belief in this club called Celtic. We absolutely knew that somewhere, somehow great things would happen.

As Gordon of this parish will testify our father frequently said that if Celtic could just win the Scottish league we would go on to win the European Cup because we played continental type football. I had many arguments with that man but he was dead right about that. We did win the league and then won the European Cup at the first time of asking.

Two other comments. We did not wear numbers on our shorts that night but we were the first club to do so. I always get this one wrong but O think it was against Sparta ( Dutch )in a pre season friendly when we won 5-1. Gordon will confirm.

In those years when a very physical Rangers team frequently beat Celtic I remember being at Ibrox when they put the late John Higgins ( another slight Celtic- mad cultured winger ) out of the game. A few years later they tried the same on Alec Byrne and he came on in the second half with his arm in a sling. He played on a took further heavy tackles.

My romance with Celtic grew with me and my continuing distaste for all things Rangers has stayed constant down these years.

Like others of the time he was a victim of tactical naivety on Celtic’s part.

Indeed, we would play young gifted players like Byrne Charlie G Johnny Higgins against hun cavemen like Shearer and Harold Davis

*Frank Brogan tae who was never the same player after running away fae shearer.

Talking of the latter, I know a bluenose that watched him paying at the gate tae get intae the coup, former club captain tae.

His da was the grounds man with Hamilton Accies and they club gave him a testimonial, Celtic sent a full strength team to play them, the deid team sent and autographed ball.

As I said he was club captain and going intae his 10th season so due a testimonial so the dumped him. So much for loyal and true.

He was “given” the job of manager of the hi hi, they then folded.

Back tae Frank Brogan, a sublime talent who could play both wings. Wish he had his brother’s heart; we might have won more than 1 European title.

*after the sad loss of the Busby Babes my da said the same thing. Following that Real game Bob Kelly said we had found our secret weapon against the “continentals” as they were called then. Oh how the meeja laughed.

In those years when a very physical Rangers team frequently beat Celtic I remember being at Ibrox when they put the late John Higgins ( another slight Celtic- mad cultured winger ) out of the game

*I believe it was shearer who did that and first chance he got Sean then ran across the pitch and humphed him. A bit like Joe Jordan doing the same thing to “hard man” souness in the 1st minute, he never kicked a ball the whole game.
