Unprecedented period, our No. 9

193

Drawing Clyde away in the next round of the Scottish Cup means eight of Celtic’s first 10 games after the winter break are away from home.  Three of those games are on plastic pitches, which often results in a tactical change – and prohibits Jozo Simunovic from playing.  Jozo was drafted into action on Saturday due to injuries to Ajer and Bitton.

Away fixtures piling up is a significant burden, there is no margin for error.  I cannot find a similar run of games in our history, this is an unprecedented period.

I’m sure Neil Lennon was as delighted as Leigh Griffiths at the opening goal at Firhill.  The manager showed faith and support to Leigh that was missing in some quarters.  The player is one of the most natural goal scorers we have had in years.  The space he found inside the penalty box for the goal is typical of his game-intelligence.  There is more to come from our No. 9.

  1. THE HANDS CANT HIT WHAT THE EYES CANT SEE on 20TH JANUARY 2020 4:43 PM

You’d expect a bit of a tail off in individual performance in the second half of the season – we generally score fewer goals in the second half of the season than in the first and that includes close title races with teams playing in Ibrox

What we will, hopefully, when things start again in earnest is improved performances after a decent rest from the hardest worked players in the the world, in Macgregor Christie and Forret.

ME, this particular injury apart, has an excellent fitness record, he’s missed 4 games in his career due to injury before now, and he has an excellent scoring record in the SPFL when he plays

We should see more of MJ

And Rogic is fit, and able to provide a first team option to help with rotation and offer something different.

Griff looks fit, Bayo isn’t far from fitness and we have a new face to push everyone.

I’d prefer to look at the positives, you can’t ignore the amount of football we played up to the end of the year and the effect that that had on performances.

You could say we are over-reliant on Eddie right now, but that’s nothing like how dependent they are on one player. I think our squad will see us through

    Now that`s a tough one , mate.

But Bob was in the UK mid `60s when we were cuffing them regularly , so it is possible.

    Remotely.

    Re Dick Beattie:

Around the time of the betting scandal involving DB the Sunday People did a story of three players from Sheffield Wednesday who were found guilty of match fixing.Tony Kay,David ‘ Bronco ‘ Layne and Peter Swan.

The career’s of these players were badly affected when they were suspended from the game for a few years and other clubs not in a big hurry to give them employment.Hopefully Celtic FC will be spared players of that ilk.

MACJAY Nor did musicians. Lonnie Donegan got the princely sum of three pounds ten for ” Rock Island line”

That’s still three pounds nine shillings more than Leadbelly got for the original! -))))

The back up band was the Hawks, Ronnie Hawkins Group, who would later become the Band. My brother, who was more of a country fan, raved about them for a long time.

  9. I see that Lenny says he likes the idea of getting Wanyama in but where would he fit him in as we have just signed Sorro, I also read that he hasn’t seen Sorro play… Mmmm

So Sorro wasn’t on Lenny’s list of players.

I maybe looking to much into this but…..

Surely every manager wants as many good players as possible? If so go and get Wanyama

Did Lenny actually want Wanyama and end up with Sorro, (who might be a good player)??

Either way I welcome Sorro and hope he turns out a great player when he eventually signs.

Around the time of the betting scandal involving DB the Sunday People did a story of three players from Sheffield Wednesday who were found guilty of match fixing.Tony Kay,David ‘ Bronco ‘ Layne and Peter Swan.

*Tony Kay had just broken intae the england squad and became britain’s most expensive player when transferred to Everton, who ironically were owned by Littlewoods and known as the mersey millionaires at the time, for £60,000 in 1962, he was the toffees captain at the time the scandal broke out.

He was jailed for 4 months and banned sine die, after 7 years it was lifted but by this time like wullie woodbine north of the border a decade or so earlier too ould tae return tae the professional game.

Peter Swan was a regular in the national side, he also was jailed for 4 months and banned sine die, it was also lifted after 8 years, he did return tae Sheffield and played a few games but soon lost his place and left for Bury but left them after being offered only a month to month contract, he was 37 and so left the game completely.

Unlike “Bronco” Lane, who it should be noted was Wednesday’s top goal scorer for 2 seasons or Jimmy Gauld both Kay and Swan were top class players, no matter what, they were done.

The career’s of these players were badly affected when they were suspended from the game for a few years and other clubs not in a big hurry to give them employment.Hopefully Celtic FC will be spared players of that ilk.

  11. I wonder……

the timing of all this re gambling…..

I wonder if some sleekit has any dirt on a particular player who might be important to the fortunes of a special, unique and historic Club?

  12. FAVOURITE UNCLE on

  13. The Hands,

“We have lost,Dembele,Armstrong,Paddy, and an “On form Sinclair”,and not replaced them”.REALLY!!!!!!!!!!

Try French Eddy,Christie,El Yanoussi, for a never in form Sinclair,as for Paddy,he was back up loan for Forrest, who is still banging in the goals, and assists.Add Shved,Arzani,Kyalami,Soro,2 LBS,2 RBs,a CH,a,GK,a host of top young talent, for all positions.

Do you ever read back what you write.?

  14. David 66,

Not in the report I read.Lenny said Celtic had been tracking him for a while and the new chief scout had watched him. He liked him,and Lenny watched all the videos of him,and liked what he saw.

  15. Just listened to a clip from BBC sportsound this evening. Big John Hartson giving it to Derek Ferguson for backing Morelos and Kenny McIntyre brought up BBJ kicking Berkovic 25 years ago to deflect. Staggering, honestly staggering.

  16. Turkeybhoy – I am going by a post on Celticnewsnow that I read a couple of days ago about Sorro and just read what he said about Wanyama.

I always thought Wanyama would be out of our price range, I just felt Lenny should not be mentioning about liking the idea of him coming in but where would he play. Ffs we are not daft.

I like Lenny and want him to succeed so much but that’s like saying I like Ronaldo but where would I fit him in.

    D. :)

  17. David66,

I was desperate to get Victor back also.Maybe this boy is a younger version. He certainly gets about the park.

  18. Amazing the amount of critics we have on here, who can write players off without actually seeing them, except for vey fleetingly,or in some cases, not at all.

    A rare gift that.

  19. Hello again all you young rebels.

Staggering right enough, don’t suppose he mentioned that wee rat

    Aye.

  23. A great idea that might appeal to the Blazers………….

    A seasonal offering……Fitba on Ice?

Suggested venue The Lake Of Menteith.

The brithers can get the gither for a bonspiel, ( curling)…. sort out business and then invite their konstituents to play a game of Iceball…rules similar to Fitba. The team with the fewest injuries………wins!
