Unprepared Celtic

1214

Shakhter Karagandy covered 5k more ground than Celtic last night, 500m per outfield player.  That’s 5.5m per minute, per player, or an extra meter every 10 seconds or so.  That kind of advantage means that when the ball breaks loose in and around the danger area, the more active team are in space – which happened at both goals.

Conversely, when Celtic were in advanced positions Shakhter players were there in numbers. The difference was not caused by exceptional exertion by Shakhter, in their match with Maribor last night, Viktoria Plzen covered 11k more than Celtic, or a clear 2 meters every 10 seconds per outfield player.

Despite enjoying the vast majority of possession the Celtic players were lacking in movement and ideas. Being short of ideas is one thing but lack of movement is altogether unacceptable. We have to prepare fitness levels ahead of the second leg meticulously; Inverness on Saturday is only relevant for those who need game time ahead of Wednesday.

The Mouhokolo-van Dijk novice partnership was a surprise; a lot of faith was shown in players few of us know much about.  Could we have held Kelvin for another few weeks?  Would it have been less of a risk to play Ambrose and/or Mulgrew in defence? Yes to both, I suspect.

We learned Georgios is not a striker in 2009.  He is one of our most effective players when away from home but not as a striker.  Anthony Stokes is a striker but his style is just as unsuited to the formation we played last night as Georgios’. We seemed to pick a team to combat Shakhter’s strengths which didn’t play to our own.

I’m not convinced signing a player one week before an important game is an ideal preparation but taking the money early for Hooper, weeks before Amido Balde (or anyone else) has settled and considered a viable starter, is a calculated risk which is now in sharp focus.

We should also show some respect to Shakhter.  The club are miles out of their depth at this stage of European football but they left with all the credit.  After the game, manager Kumykov played down his chances, “we are not the favourites”.  He’s a clever man who knows what he is doing.

It is possible Celtic will play as badly next week but it’s more likely that we will put on a vastly better performance. Between now and then we have plenty of opportunity to wallow in an embarrassing defeat, so knock yourself out, but I’ll hold fire until the tie is decided, which I expect to be in Celtic’s favour. Bring it on.

You got to love European football.

  1. We lost a game to a side that we now know are considerably less talented than ourselves.

It happens. No lasting harm done. We went into the game not really knowing

how good or bad our opposition was. Now we know. They are very ordinary.

The breaks went the way of our modest opponents.

Celtic are far better than last night’s performance.

It is half-time in the tie with the home leg still to come at Fortress Paradise

This time it is Shakhter who face the tiring journey.

Celtic are massively odds-on favourite to win the return.

Why are so many of us so pessimistic & so negative ?

When did the Celtic support lose their faith in the team ?

Nothing is guaranteed, but if we are not in the draw for the group stages, then we don’t deserve to be there.

The ball is firmly in Celtic’s court.

I do want us to go thru but maybe dropping into the Euro cup wont be a bad thing for the young ones at Celtic. A good learning curv!!!

Last night’s game was hugely frustrating. After 10 mins I thought we would blow that team away, alas it didn’t materialise.

Anyway, this is my take on the team which should start on Wednesday.

    Forster

    Ambrose Van Djiek Mulgrew

Matthews Brown Ledley Sammi (or Boerrigter if fit)

    Commons

    Balde

Karagandy will again only play with a lone striker and I’d like to think between the 3 of the defenders they could cope with him.

Matthews gives plenty of pace going forward and back and delivers a great cross. If Boerrigter is fit I’d swap him and Commons from the positions above but if it’s Sammi who is in I’d leave as is.

I reckon that team would win it down the wings with crosses into the box. Plenty for big Balde to get his head onto.

    There!

I’m a sentimentalist, I was there when we beat Sporting Lisbon 5-0 and Cologne 3-0 to overcome 2-0 first leg defeats, I am positive that we will do the same again.

    ==

I’d like to think we can turn it around. But the sorry fact is the current squad are no where near as good as those who pumped Sporting and Cologne. Apart for KC and perhaps Anto we lack players capable of breaking down a packed defence. Tippy tappy football required – can we borrow wee Messi for a game?

    TryingtokeepthefaithCSC

  5. Malonebhoy and others – i can see us scoring 4 or more. Feck sake lads we’re celtic. Losing one week and hammering teams the next week is what we do…….

  6. Shakhter will play with a 5 man back line with another 5 in front, chasing everything once we cross the half way line. Barcelona had trouble breaking us down when we did that.

We need to mix it up, sometimes trying to pass through them, or pass and move down the wings for Adam or Derk to get to the bye line and hit good crosses. Even the odd long cross could put them under pressure. Our movement off the ball has to be sharper.

The frustrating thing is we can do it. So come on bhoys, show what we can do.

  7. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

    Snake plissken.

I believe that we were a different team with Derk in the team. So much so that if he stays fit i can see him surpassing 25 goals this season. Forrest should learn from him.

Mind you this is based on mere minutes of viewing. Too early in the season to judge. Just as it is for you

  8. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I dont know how you would do it but the Celtic fans and the Celtic Team would get a boost for next weeks second leg match if the Board announced that they had resolved the difficulties with the Green Brigade. Without section 111 being full and the noise the Green Brigade produce I think we are aiding Shaktar.H.H.

  9. Snake Plissken on

The Honest Mistake loves being first

Is he going to be fit?

    Will he last the game?

A rather big variable I would say. He looks a player but his fitness is in question.

  10. The Battered Bunnet on

If Shakter are only half as lucky in the return leg as they were last night, we’ll need to score 4 to progress.

That makes the team line up a straightforward case of playing…

…Sammi on the right, Derk on the left, and Amido point man, supported by Commons in the hole, with Watt and Stokes either side of him.

    Tally ho!

  11. Kilbowie – support can only be given when the one you are supporting appreciates it and, when necessary supports you. At the moment Celtic are victimising its support and pursuing a different agenda to that support.

We cant go on being mugs forever.

I noted this quote from Paul.

“I’m not convinced signing a player one week before an important game is an ideal preparation but taking the money early for Hooper, weeks before Amido Balde (or anyone else) has settled and considered a viable starter, is a calculated risk which is now in sharp focus”.

So celtic do take risks do they – here’s me thinking (and being told repeatedly) we dont. This gamble that PL took is massive – if, as it seems likely, it fails then what next for Peter?

I have spoken to loads of fellow supporters today – the disgust at what is going on is very real – even if some of you dont want to face up to that.

This is a turning point for relations between the support and the club. Fail to qualify and the ramifications go way beyond not being in the CL.

From a position of real strength celtic are managing to engineer a needless disaster.

I think we are clutching at straws if we think after watching Dek for 25 minutes he is the answer to our problems and putting a huge weight on his shoulders.I asked earlier all you bhoys who are selecting your team for next weeks game why your not picking Stokes? in my opinion he is the one player who could get us the goals we require.H.H.

  15. Derk looked the biz when he played last week, his injury was unfortunate, he played a load of games last season, so his long term fitness really shouldn’t be a bother.

Problem Lenny will have is how to accomadate JF and CM, cos as sure as eggs are eggs, they will play if fit.

  17. Nothing to add to that, Paul67, except that I hope the game doesn’t destroy our CB pairing’s confidence. It must have taken a bigger battering than that handed out by thon CF.

By the bye, why did Van Dijk take the free kick, which is usually the preserve of Mulgrew or Commons?

What price are Karagandy to win the Champions league?

Some people seem to believe they are world beaters. They are no better than St Mirren with a long throw expert in their ranks!

Celtic will be back in this tie in the first 20 mins. We will score at will at home even without a new striker.

I will be betting Celtic – 2 goals and Celtic -3 goals and expect to pick up my winnings at full time. No team in the EL will want to draw this side because it’s a helluva journey to go to Kazakhstan. They treated last nights match like their cup final which it was. Celtic will deal with them at home.

Weeminger, thanks for that. Would be interesting to see Ajax buy/sell figures in comparison to Celtic and other clubs outwith the big 4 leagues.

  20. Great analysis Paul. Hopefully Celtic fans will turn up in numbers and create an atmosphere. Then we can push the players to fight for every ball, just like the Kazakhstan fans did for them last night.

I agree that playing the same team against ICT (one of the strongest Scottish sides) before will give the team a bit more of an idea whats required Wedensday.

The formation and selection MUST change. It’s just a question of which options to choose between Derk, Balde & Stokes.

See when we are withing 5 yards of their penalty box? Can someone take the responsibity of actually having a shot at goal?

Commons was unlucky not to score from distance but long range shooting is not something we seem to have in our inventory.

Just for a bit of variety to unsettle defenders happy to back off knowing the ball is going out wide.

As for the alleged debate on all of this…

Opinions are opinions. They are not debate, they are exchanging opinions.

Opinions are rarely anything to do with facts and often just a combination of things that we are not even conscious of. Upbringing, personal experiences, education, relationships, personal preferences, interpretation etc… we end up who we are by what we say and do.

As Celtic fans we can’t even agree on who was principally at fault for the first goal last night, yet the footage is the same for all of us.

I agree with you that exchanging opinions on a site when we all support the one team should be done without personal insults.
