Unproductive costs

Lewis Morgan has had a difficult shift this season.  The 23-year-old winger was used sparingly as a squad player before the concurrent absences of Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths and Bayo saw him drafted into the striker role against Rennes on 28th November.

Lewis scored a good goal that day but he is not a striker.  He made another four appearances in that position before Edouard’s return, which brought the experiment to an end.  He made 17 appearances in League One for Sunderland during the second half of last season.  In the Wembley play-off final, he was brought on as an early substitute, while Aiden McGeady remained on the bench, but his time in the North East was not particularly productive.

Now he is Going to Miami for talks with Inter (not that one), with the MLS side having agreed a fee with Celtic for his permanent transfer.

There are several things about our experience with Lewis Morgan I like.  Celtic scouts considered him the top talent in the Championship, a player with the potential to make the step up.  It is good that we sign players like this.

He was loaned back to St Mirren, then after six months at Lennoxtown, out to Sunderland.  He was given a chance in the qualifiers, then put through the striker turmoil, which gave Neil Lennon a chance to assess the player.

The player has a League Cup winner’s medal and a Wembley experience, things that he will be talking about for the rest of his life, and is likely to sign a contract to keep him in Florida for a few years.  He would have hoped to hold down a first team place at Celtic, but on balance, the move from St Mirren has worked out well for him.

We have difficulty keeping players who are outstandingly successful, but they usually leave a for fee that allows us to further strengthen.  What happens with players who do not make the grade is also important.  Getting them off the wage bill, for a fee and hopefully a profit, stops the budget from being clogged by unproductive costs, a problem we have discussed on these pages since the days of Martin.

It appears that Ryan Christie did not submit any written or video evidence.

A representative of Celtic FC was in attendance but kept schtum. The Compliance Officer and two of three “former match officials” (which I believe is a secret code for ‘masons'”) categorised Christie’s action as one involving brutality. Christie’s defence, inasmuch as he had one, was that the officials had seen the incident, and therefore had deemed it to be not worthy of punishment. This is known in Glasgow as the Alfredo defence albeit not one that has proved productive for players wearing green and white hoops. End result is that Ryan was found to have breached A2 of rule 200, that of Violent Conduct”. With a bit of brutality thrown in.

    Can’t say fairer than that.

That`s about the size of it.

Is there a law about character assassination ?

    Legal redress ?

Have they not overstepped the mark ?

  4. Son in law watching Tyrese Campbell at Stoke – asked how he’s playing

‘Not done too much at the mo tbh he’s an in and out player I think his work rate is poor as well. He’s worth a free though’

Ryan Christie should not play for scottyland again!

  6. ….and so the victim who is a proud Scot, an exciting player and one of our brightest performers should deny himself a position that he rightly sees as a recognition of his stellar performances should forego an honour properly achieved, to represent his national team?

It’s not the rules that are wrong. It’s the biased rogue who deftly applies thum partially.

It’s not the coverage that is wrong, if someone in a footballing jersey acts like a thug then he should be held responsible for his actions and appropriately applied sanctions brought to bear……

The goons within Football’s custodians have chosen to make more of this than is required and their like-minded chums at Shortie have chosen to push the story with emotive and sensational intent.

Some might say they were rubbing our noses in it, so emboldened by thur teams recent success.

If I was Celtic, I’d encourage our players to hang back from Internationals but I’d never stop pro’s taking the international acclaim their talents deserve. It’s not the Scotland team I dislike, it’s the blazers who have distorted

game and how its played on and off the park.

If Scotland’s supporters are prepared to put up with it any further, our descent into mediocracy is assured. It won’t be long till our domestic game is on a par with that of Ireland.

The Singin’ Kettles of the Cat boots an’ Kilts brigade are a descent lot mostly but will not rock the ( Skye) boat at all.

The Celtic Support should however imo Bhoycott that place until the regime is changed, the Fitba’ philosophy brought into the 21st century and a future focused footballing organisation allowed to benefit the whole nation.

  7. Football’s a funny old game a few weeks after losing 9-0 at home Southampton beat Leicester away.

    What happened there Brendan

Who had ever heard of a football player being convicted and handed a heavy duty suspension – when there was zero evidence against him other than an opposition player pointed a finger at him? Well of course it would be one of our guys, and they used the term ON THE BALNCE OF PROBABILITY to justify their verdict. They must have thought that well if Celtic are prepared to swallow that chances are they’ll swallow anything. So in the week when Ryan Kent is pointing a make believe gun at us and Alfredo Morelos is making the throat cut gesture at us, we are all thinking, well one of them maybe even both of them will be getting, but no, who in fact ends up getting it – Ryan Christie!

Yeah they were right – when they sold us the BALANCE OF PROBABILITY verdict they must have thought what a bunch of wallies they’ll swallow anything – right again!

  9. Some posters wanting us to bring big Victor back but despite Spurs long injury list he still can’t get on the 7 man bench.

  10. Watching a Scotland team without Celtic players…………….now that’s what I would call ” brutal…….TEAM CELTIC bring it on.

  11. shankland hatrick – header, left foot , right foot. Knows where the goal is – I don’t think he can lead the line but he’d be great penalty box player with 2 up front.

    With respect, so what?

IMO he needs to play regularlly.

We can give him the game time he needs.

Plus, he won’t be facing the quality there is in the EPL.

If we could agree a deal that suits us and the player, I’m for it.

    Hope you are good!

  13. Any reports on The Griff……………….?

The break should be doin’ that Bhoy good.

    Seriously????

  15. Philbhoy

Think we need players ready to go and his lack of game time would put that into question

  16. Adi – I was just saying Andy Robertson for Lpool starts on Right side, I always thought he just stuck to the left.

Jose must have got him on right but he is back on left now.

It wouldn’t take long to get his match fitness up.

Next game against thistle would be a good warm up for him.

  18. Philbhoy

There must be a reason he isn’t even getting on the bench – he left us 6 years ago – are we judging him on that form

  19. Gene – Cheers

Been dipping in and out of Lpool game whilst making Din Din Dinny Doo.

The only reason we have a sniff of getting him is because he isn’t in Tottenhams plans.

  22. David 66

I would bet if he hadn’t played for us then no-one would have been suggesting we signed a player with only 4 appearances this season.

    —————–

Clubs are lining up to bring him in, I’d say his options are limited.

He was very average for Spurs, and I can’t see who he’d replace in our starting 11.

We need to be signing players that are better than what we have, players going straight into the first 11.

  24. Gene – I don’t doubt that.

But we do know him and know what he can do, bring him home.

    D. :)

  25. David 66

We know what he could do and know what he did – looking forward is a gamble – and as the huddle said who would he replace – our priority must be a striker

  26. The Huddle

He might not be getting a game for a team at the top end of the EPL but that is a far higher level, than we operate at.

Started a CL semi final 7 months ago.

Has physical attributes that no one in our squad can match, would be a first pick every week, especially against the better teams.
