Unproductive costs

Lewis Morgan has had a difficult shift this season.  The 23-year-old winger was used sparingly as a squad player before the concurrent absences of Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths and Bayo saw him drafted into the striker role against Rennes on 28th November.

Lewis scored a good goal that day but he is not a striker.  He made another four appearances in that position before Edouard’s return, which brought the experiment to an end.  He made 17 appearances in League One for Sunderland during the second half of last season.  In the Wembley play-off final, he was brought on as an early substitute, while Aiden McGeady remained on the bench, but his time in the North East was not particularly productive.

Now he is Going to Miami for talks with Inter (not that one), with the MLS side having agreed a fee with Celtic for his permanent transfer.

There are several things about our experience with Lewis Morgan I like.  Celtic scouts considered him the top talent in the Championship, a player with the potential to make the step up.  It is good that we sign players like this.

He was loaned back to St Mirren, then after six months at Lennoxtown, out to Sunderland.  He was given a chance in the qualifiers, then put through the striker turmoil, which gave Neil Lennon a chance to assess the player.

The player has a League Cup winner’s medal and a Wembley experience, things that he will be talking about for the rest of his life, and is likely to sign a contract to keep him in Florida for a few years.  He would have hoped to hold down a first team place at Celtic, but on balance, the move from St Mirren has worked out well for him.

We have difficulty keeping players who are outstandingly successful, but they usually leave a for fee that allows us to further strengthen.  What happens with players who do not make the grade is also important.  Getting them off the wage bill, for a fee and hopefully a profit, stops the budget from being clogged by unproductive costs, a problem we have discussed on these pages since the days of Martin.

  1. Surely our training methods have to be looked at. When I watch the likes of Liverpool, Man yoo, Barca, Real and even Sevco, they all manage to get through a season with little or no long term injuries to their first team pools, whereas we seem to have 1 at least every week. Why is that?

  2. Neil Lennon & McCartney on

“He’s lightning quick and left-footed. He can score a goal out of nothing. He’ll pass it into the back of the net and can thump it into the back of the net, too.”

Shrewsbury boss Sam Rocketts, who took the 20-year-old forward on loan for the second half of last season

  3. Leigh Griffiths is earning a basic salary of £1m/year. He appears to have no problem spending this money on yachts in Dubai for him and his partner, it’s the other side the bargain, justifying it, that seems to be the problem.

I have no idea why he appears to be getting the benefit of the doubt from a majority on this site. His lifestyle is at the root of his problems. Brendan was quoted saying that he needed to become a 24hr/day athlete, obviously inferring that there were problems with his professionalism.

He signs a new four year deal in September 2018, downs tools weeks later, and has never picked them up again.

Some say he should go out on loan – to be frank I can’t see any Scottish club, even his beloved Hibs, risking money to pick up part of his wages.

He has shown in the past that he has the talent to be a top player, now I believe he will be happy to hang around picking up his £20k/week for the next twenty months of his contract.

NL demonstrated, by using Lewis Morgan as a striker, that he has lost trust and patience – the club by signing Patryk indicate that it is moving on.

    A wasted talent.

but, with regards to Tyrese Campbell…….Hmmmmmm….

first spotted his name surprisingly bracketed in with us and the huns battling it ooot for his signature???

As a rule we tend to get our business done away from the headlines, so whereas reports on the fulla are good I wouldn’t be surprised if he turns up at the Huns givin’ it the full Stevie G “Liverpool on The Klyde” rainjursitis patter…especially if it looks like the “Sash Window” is more of an exit than an entry point………

The problem being is that we know what a fit Leigh Griffiths can deliver. A tremendous prospect but his bloody free kick at the end of the Hun game screamed ‘me, me, me..’

If we play 1 up still then he’s even further down the pecking order than before the window. You’re right though, he could prove to be an expensive drain on resources for us.

I found this a fair point:

`NL demonstrated, by using Lewis Morgan as a striker, that he has lost trust and patience – the club by signing Patryk indicate that it is moving on.`

but I was surprised at this:

`His lifestyle is at the root of his problems`.

I assume that only a select few have enough information to suggest what is at the root of his problems.

Man United have had a lot of injury problems; Pogba, Martial, Bailly, Rojo and McTominay have all been out for significant periods this season

At present Liverpool have Lovren, Matip, Fabinho Keita and Milner all out injured

What if Leigh Griffiths free kick v the huns had gone in …..?

It was an impossible angle (unless you were Shunsuke) and you could see a line of our big men pleading for it to be swung in front of McGregor (which was the right thing to do for the team’s chances of scoring).

It looked like Leigh did what was best for Leigh in the circumstance and of course proved to be a waste.

  16. Players Union……Re Ryan Christie.

Following my two emails to the Players Union yesterday, I have just received a response moments ago, which i have Copied & Pasted below……..

The response was more or less what I expected. I certainly do NOT believe the last sentence of their response, as if it was TRUE….then why has the Players Union allowed one of their Members to not only be treated differently, but BRANDED as some kind of BRUTE ?

    ………………….

Thanks for taking the time to get in touch James; this is clearly a very emotive issue for you.

Unfortunately I am unable to answer any of the questions you pose as much of the work PFA Scotland does must remain confidential. You can rest assured however that, as the players’ union, on a daily basis we ensure that all our members receive the appropriate advice and representation.

I didn’t want Griff to have a pop with that free kick either . Too far out and not central enough . I would have loved if it had gone in for the draw obviously , but also for Griff’s rehabilitation psychologically.
