Untenable position for SFA president as drama unfolds

917

Campbell Ogilvie’s appointment as president of the SFA was always controversial.  As general secretary and director of Rangers, Ogilvie was the club’s chief administrator during the final 11-year period they refused to employ Catholic footballers.  In many other walks of life, this background would make him an embarrassing relic of a former era, but in Scottish football it was enough to see him promoted to the ultimate honour position.

He remained in position at Rangers long after the new regime of Sir David Murray arrived and set aside the decades-old sectarian employment policy but left the club in 2005, joining Hearts as operations director two months later.  All of this puts the SFA president in central position regarding the on-going tax tribunal, which is charged with deciding if Rangers illegally evaded tax from a period starting in 2000 and going on well beyond Ogilvie’s departure.

If the First Tier Tribunal finds against Rangers the SFA must ask for Ogilvie’s immediate resignation.  The association cannot have a president embroiled in a tax evasion scam which, even before a verdict has been decided, has already caused untold harm to his former club and the reputation Scottish football.  The scale of the damage to public finances has yet to be definitively established but it will not make good reading.

The SFA has just embarked on its first proper investigation into whether directors of a football club, in this instance Rangers, are fit and proper persons to hold such a position.  Office holders at the association cannot exercise power over the game if they are not subject to the same standards they demand from clubs.  Pending this investigation, and the outcome of the tax tribunal, Ogilvie should temporarily step aside.  Scotland is not yet a banana republic, public bodies must have robust ethics and must not allow the shadow of contagion to be cast over the body charged with ensuring legal and moral standards are adhered to.

The SFA has some enormously important months ahead.  Its president is currently in a position to influence which course it takes and, if the tribunal verdict falls against Rangers, could be implicated in the scandal which precipitated the crisis.  While I am sure Campbell Ogilvie will be shown to have acted with impeccable ethical standards, the SFA must quickly establish a structure clear of contagion.

For me is is also interesting that Steven Craven was not readmitted to the refereeing fraternity and that Campbell Ogilvie or Stewart Regan did not react to this

Assistant referee Steven Craven quits after abuse following Celtic row

    Article history

The Scottish Football Association fears further resignations from referees and officials after Steven Craven, the assistant referee who overturned a penalty award to Celtic during their game at Dundee United nine days ago, quit today.

The level of abuse Craven has received for that intervention has led him to end his refereeing career, the SFA admitted tonight. “I can confirm that I have met with the relevant match officials and members of the referee departments regarding the events that occurred during the recent match between Dundee United and Celtic,” said Stewart Regan, the SFA’s chief executive. “I can also confirm that Steven Craven has tendered his resignation and will no longer officiate in the professional game. I hope to conclude the investigation within the next 48 hours and will make further comment at that time.”

The SFA believes Craven may not be the last to adopt that stance, with worries growing within Hampden Park over continually negative scrutiny of referees. Kenny Clark, a former top-flight official in Scotland, has claimed that his ex-colleagues have been “receiving letters with razor blades in them and having their windows smashed” by irate fans.

Celtic have made their displeasure with decisions plain recently. The referee for Sunday’s Old Firm derby, Willie Collum, was castigated by the club’s manager Neil Lennon for awarding a dubious penalty to Rangers. The SFA has thus far not publicly backed Collum over his performance

Been thinking about Voguepunters excellent piece yesterday and thinking about what effect the huns have had on my life. I’ve got to say I think I’ve probably been luckier than most. There have been occasions when I have had hand-smacking-forehead moments in my life:

I went out with a girl from Ayrshire for a long time who’s dad was a season ticket holder at Snake Mountain and on one occasion having dinner at her parents house with an aunt in attendance, the topic of religion came up, and I said “well I’m a Catholic”, to which her aunt’s response was a derisory “Oh we know that alright”.

A Celtic R*ngers game late ’96 watched with same girl in Curlers on Byres Road which R*ngers won due to a slip from Hannah (I think, there was a lot of beer drunk afterwards) and a goal from Laudrup when a tall Neo-Nazi wannabe with huge black discs in his ear lobes (you could still see him around Byres Road a few years ago) stood and shouted “Come on Scotland, get into this Irish scum” despite Celtic having more Scottish born players in their team than R*ngers, and I don’t think we had any Irish players in the team.

The 4 interviews I’ve had where I’ve been asked which team I support (It really confuses them if you didn’t attend a school starting with St, or if you have a cv like mine that doesn’t require me to enter which school I went to).

But to be honest, my worst experience was after the 1999 Dallas coin game when I attempted to walk back to my car parked off Duke St which meant heading up the hill towards The Louden Tavern. Bear in mind they had just won the league and should have been happy. No, they took this as an excuse to come out of the cesspit and attack innocent people, including women and children. I’ll never forget hearing a scream from a terrified mother trying to run back down the hill away from the animals. Don’t worry though. Strathclyde’s finest intervened and their solution was to stop law abiding people walking up the street to get back to our transport and diverted us around Belgrove. That is the difference. When it comes to football we want to enjoy it and play ‘pure, beautiful, inventive football’. They want to beat us by whatever means, fair, foul or literally.

Would Scotland as a society be better without R*ngers? Undoubtedly. Would Celtic be better outside of Scottish football? I live in hope.

A triumph for social media (in Glasgow!)

Head of B2B at Willoughby PR, Tom Leatherbarrow, shares his thoughts on the blog Rangerstaxcase.com.

For those who didn’t get around to reading the Guardian’s excellent article on Saturday about the phenomenal job done by the blog ‘Rangerstaxcase.com.’, I would urge you to make time to give it a read.

Even if you are not a football supporter, there is much to ponder on from the perspective of the performance of traditional media sources and in terms of the impact of social media.

It is a story with multiple themes; alienation of the traditional football fan; a perceived failure on the part of traditional media and the use of social media as a catalyst for the sharing of vital information amongst stakeholders.

For those who don’t have the time let me summarise the story for you here. An anonymous football supporter, ironically not a Rangers supporter, got wind of the tax trouble that Glasgow Rangers was in, but could find no mention of it amongst traditional media outlets.

Instead, traditional media fed its readers, namely the club’s supporters, the usual stories including the building of a super casino and transfer gossip, including, apparently, a ‘link’ to the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo. The result was that many Rangers supporters had little clue that their club owed £70 million to HMRC until last week when it went bust.

In frustration, our anonymous hero set up a blog, ‘rangerstaxcase.com’, and started digging deeper. The blog has ‘broken’ a whole host of stories in relation to the case and now has a daily traffic of over 100,000 views with reader comments coming in at a rate of about 1,500 per day. Bear in mind that these people are not discussing football, they are discussing accounting conventions and insolvency law!

How did this happen? Our hero blames an unholy triangle of trade in which traditional media sources have got too close to the club and felt unable to cover the story for risk of losing their ‘access’.

For the record, I am fully aware of the role that PR has probably played in all of this. PR people at Rangers, let’s assume they were in the know, have been feeding these stories to traditional media outlets, in the guise of ‘doing their job’.

So what can we learn from all of this? Media owners from Rupert Murdoch down have blamed the internet for their woes, but this case begs the question whether certain sections of traditional media are giving readers the information they need and perhaps explains why so many are turning to alternative sources of information.

It must also be remembered that not all traditional media is scared of questioning itself. After all, I read this story in The Guardian. Kudos to them for running it!

It looks to me, at a reading of the SPL regs, that there is no rule on these contracts one way or another … and if I was at Rangers I would argue that makes it pretty near impossible to impose sanctions.

That’s if the story has grounds in the first place. I think the rules are too vague to make this one stick.
