Unwritten rules of football when you are head butted

239

There was a more direct than normal look to Celtic’s play yesterday, perhaps after our display earlier this season on Rugby Park’s artificial surface. At Kilmarnock, we learned that our normal passing game is best suited to grass.  At Livingston, we learned that we need more practice at getting the ball forward early against tight SPFL defences.

Referee Kevin Clancy declined to show Livingston striker Menga a red card for head-butting Ryan Christie, almost certainly because Ryan remained on his feet.  There are many unwritten rules in football, one is that if a red card offense is committed, the referee will not produce one unless the victim drops to the ground.  Even if this reaction is unnecessary.

That incident aside, the game could have had a different outcome it the ref clamped down on repeat offenses early in the proceedings.

Livingston are defensively better than anyone in the league, apart from Celtic, but they have scored only three goals from open play.  This was a concern when they caused so much havoc in the Celtic defence at corner kicks, but it was the throw-ins from Alan Lithgow which were the greatest concern.  Lithgow can drop a throw-in into the six yard box, where the first touch from either an attacker or defender creates a bun fight in the most dangerous area of the field.

It cannot be beyond Celtic to develop the combination of strength and technique necessary to replicate this ability.

The squad would have left West Lothian in sombre mood after the broken eye socket injury to Kristoffer Ajer that will keep the defender out until after the winter break.  Compensating for this disappointment is getting to the top of the league table for the first time this season after Hearts loss to Kilmarnock on Saturday.

  1. Seeing as it’s international break fortnight we should maybe be looking for topics to discuss in the absence of real football.

With us top of the league and in a Cup Final, financially secure, with no transfer window, no poppygate and playing well, even the board should be safe from negative posts.

So what about Scott Brown? Discuss!

When is he going to be fit?

We have Hamilton away, then Rosenborg away before the final v Aberdeen.

Would you want our captain back for the final?

If yes, you would want him to have game time before that.

Would you play him away in a vital Euro tie without a preparation game?

Means Broonie should play v Accies.

Another musing I’ve had recently; could ole Scotty bhoy play at right back?

  2. anytime the compliance officer gives s a ban following the game played, then the player involved should automatically miss the next game or two between the two teams involved and not the next game , it is only fair that the team that are cheated should get the benefit in the next upcoming game/s.

  3. my other pet hate is the poor communication from our club regarding our injured players , update on actual injury , progress and expected return would help.

  4. That awkward moment when your lying in a dentists chair, mouth wide open his assistant says did you

see the Livi game on TV yesterday? and he replies in a monotone………. ” I don’t watch Celtic ”

  7. I was talking to my friend there ( yes I have one, even better he’s not imaginary) Anyway he does the tour guides at Celtic Park, at the weekend an old bhoy done the tour aged 88, he was at The Empire Exhibition Cup Final in 1938.

Wow. There can’t be many fans alive, who were at that final.

Hopefully Celtic will do a follow up on it.

I wonder if he posts or lurks on here.

Great news about Christie. Thoroughly deserved.

Anyone who saw him at Aberdeen would have known there was a quality player there. Couldn’t believe some of the negative comments about him.

Did all the right things. Went out on loan to get game experience, worked on his physical conditioning, came back and trained well. The least he deserved was a year at the club who signed him to show what he could do.

Hopefully could be the off-the-ball running goalscoring midfielder we have been missing since Armstrong left.

  9. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

I see the Motherwell manager is very unhappy with the booking.

Maybe they could appeal it on an invented “mistaken identity”. Or is that avenue only available to one club?

  10. Glass2-no player or manager can ever be charged in Scottish football, for criticizing a referee. They can just refer them to Ryan Jack (I think that’s his name),or the huns statement from last week.

  11. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    MacIntyre – McBurnie is “unorthodox”.

Aye, okay. I just went to the toilet for an “unorthodox”…..

  12. Congrats to Bren and the lads after a good week in Europe and making it back to the summit after tough game yesterday unfortunately with one serious injury. Livi’s keeper denied Celtic of all three points with some great saves. Downside this week was the news BT sport may loose the excellent coverage they give Scottish football to the EPL obsessed Sky Sports. A huge loss to that crowd.

    Big Packy.

It’s a big yes from me. I don’t know what happened with Mick on here, but hopefully it can/will be resolved.

Incidentally are you Ryan’s granda. :-)

Maybe he will give you a share of his new signing on fee. :-)

  20. The blog is quiet tonight, so I just thought I’d ask if you could say a special mention in your prayers for my great nephew.

Aidan was born last Sunday but had a difficult birth.

He’s fighting back and will survive but he has an MRI scan tomorrow as he was starved of oxygen.

I kept it to just a few but taking CRC’s advice from Saturday and would ask you to keep wee Aidan in your prayers. HH
