Use Wolfsburg to find desperately needed sharpness

1058

If you’ve been here for a while you’ll have noticed I don’t pay much attention to preseason friendlies but tomorrow’s game against Wolfsburg takes on a more serious tone after Tuesday’s reversal – Celtic desperately need to find sharpness.

Despite the well-placed confidence that we’ll cope comfortably at Celtic Park on Wednesday against Lincoln Red Imps, the serious challenges will come thick and fast thereafter.

Players need to find their edge and the manager needs to learn who goes where and works with whom. It’s just about possible for us to get things together, but whoever we pull out of the hat in today’s provisional third qualifying round draw will be delighted to catch a team in apparent flux.

All this brings us back to Wolfsburg’ a much needed test.

  2. Oh well? And hear was me thinking that you lot sent questions to the SFA for answers? And them telling you to go FY? So it was all about the Celtic board then? Surprise surprise then eh? I kinda knew that when you lot made an arse of res12 you’d turn the guns on the board, predictable actualy.

    You’re probably right.

Let’s say the club had advertised these positions as “Get on the staff list” or similar. They would have then no doubt been lambasted for not stating the ‘zero hours’ basis. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

Or they go the route I suggested to Canamalar, employing the average number they need with the downsides that entails.

It denies those people that genuinely prefer a very casual employment basis an opportunity to get some extra cash.

To me the positions advertised are not contracted, and therefore not really ‘zero hours contract’ and you definitely wouldn’t be applying if you wanted regular work.

I don’t really want to get involved in how or why people get sanctioned as it makes me fizz. Suffice to say they shouldn’t be getting pushed towards these kinds of jobs in the 1st place.

Dunno what saddens me more-that my club jumps on the zero-hour contract bandwagon,or that some of our fans are in favour, and trying to justify it.

    Just be grateful you’ve got a job,eh?

    Wankers,the lot of them.

At least with TD,he’s only after his next Bonio. I’m struggling to understand how the likes of WEEMINGER can justify it.

Oh,aye. He worked there. So he knows.

He clearly knows fuck all about the current benefit system then. Or maybe just doesn’t care about people like that anymore.

Scunnered, aye. But saddened more by a considerable distance.

    Tony..,

You never have and still know nothing about Res12, you open your mouth and let your belly rumble, even after all the patience Auldheod and BRTH spent trying to help you understand, I told them your just no bright enough to be wasting time explaining anything to. Your the epitome of stupid, only your opinion matters to you, even when people have educated you in words of single syllables, your still too thick to grasp the concept of Res12 and what it’s about, it can only be what you say it’s about and that changes every time you have a bowel movement.

Ok. I’ll turn it around and say do you think it’s possible to employ people on the following basis.

Contracted hours. “5pm-7.45pm on Wednesday Or Tuesday evenings on dates not yet known”

Essentially that’s when some of these extra staff will be required.

No,mate. This is not how they work.

    CANAMALAR explained it to you.

And btw,the games are known in advance. Planning can be done around staffing levels to suit.

The important point you seem to ignore is that nowadays the possession of that zero-hours,get here now, contract, means that people lose their benefits in exchange for an empty promise.

I’ll cut you some slack. It wasn’t the case back in your day.

But it is now. And it’s not something we should be getting involved in.

And you clearly know nothing about the staffing requirements of entertainment venues, and amongst other things that’s what Celtic Park is. (although the football of recent season hasn’t always fallen into that category).

Every theatre, club, gig venue in the land does what the clubs are doing. They don’t have shows every night, and they don’t always need the number of staff required for a sold-out show. People are called ad-hoc.

If you’ve followed the discussion and looked at the job ad. This is different from someone at eg Sports Direct that is contracted for and expected to be available for full-time hours. Which, like you, I’m totally against.

  14. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Oh and we sent questions to the SFA because the Plc told us to send letters to the SFA, it was never our intention to send anything to the SFA, that was all part of the Plc’s strategy, to what ends we still don’t know but suspect it was about wasting our time. But we played their game with every request they came up with.

We advised them it would be a mistake if they charged us with taking the letter to UEFA as we would then be in sole control of all further actions, for whatever reason the. Plc took a conscious decision to abdicate their responsibility towards shareholders interests was their choice.

So we are now in full control of what happens next and we no longer even need to share our strategy, letters or responses, the Plc are now completely in the dark about what we will do next their advice or comment is no longer sought and that is a direct result of them abdicating that responsibility.

Whatever happens next, its possible that the board hear directly from UEFA and not us, that is the position we have been put in.

    Good post.

The agenda, is to force poor people to work for state benefits….or nothing preferably.

Its the Victorian ideology of the middle-class, updated.

Workhouses, The Poor Law, State Repression, Child Labour, Hard Labour and the Silent System in Prisons….Etc.

    Thats what they want.

What kind of contracts were the staff on before zero hours contracts? How did the club cope before?

I’m skeptical that the club uses these contracts out of necessity

  17. Hi all,

my student son was offered a zero hours contract with sports direct and subsequently never heard from them again. Only a fool or a red hot capitalist want these T&Cs. If anybody can dredge up 100 genuine people in the country whom these contracts totally suit i would eat my hat. Obviously TD has an agenda of winding everybody up, so lets leave him to it and ignore his posts. We can then concentrate on Celtic which is the blogs raison d’etre as it should be Hail Hail!!

  18. All this talk of zero hour contracts has me thinking that a load of our players should be on that!!!

The problem as I see it is that we have so much dross on our books which value wise, amount to nothing so we are stuck with them until the contract runs down, what a millstone!!

On another matter, it seems to me that a lot of vitriol is being aimed at Tony D and looks similar to the bullying which sent my dear friend KoJo away. People are entitled to their opinions after all so please accept that people all have their personal opinions to which they are entitled.

It’s not very classy to call a stupid person stupid —even TD67. Just humour him.

I know you guys have given everything for RES12. I know Lawwell has had Celtic fans in his office and shown the correspondence and I leave it at that.

Put all that aside. Lawwell has played with you—you are in good company so don’t worry.

Sometimes you need to set the cat amongst the pigeons and it brings its own momentum and do the other stuff in parallel. That’s a bit how Fergus operated to take control of the club publicly and privately and how he ousted Farry.

Lawwell looks after No 1 before everything else. He has never lost a nights sleep over RES12—-just noise to manage.

Good Luck in the good fight—just don’t bank on substantial help from PL.

Zero hours contracts… Great when your day rate is £500 and you can pick and choose the projects you take on. The problem is the style of contract is used near-exclusively to ensure an Employer conforms with the law while managing to the minimum the rights of and obligations owed to the employee, who in the majority of cases, is on minimum wage: Giving the least to those earning the least.

For Celtic, it’s entirely unnecessary because the demand profile on each department is known at the start of each season, and fluctuates only as far as knockout competition and other one-off events dictate.

The simple solution is an annualised hours contract: We can’t confirm the dates and times of your work, but we do know we’ll need you for 300 hours each year, working typically but not exclusively on these days and these hours, and others as required by the business, notified in advance as we are able, and offer you a contract on those terms.

    Lucky Cody,

We have never expected or depended on help from the Plc, playing their game was as much as we could muster and that included their positive publicity game and the claims that they assisted.

The fact is it was their responsibility to take ownership of Res12 and that they never did after nearly three years and the time bar almost running out, shows the extent of their assistance.

  26. Can I make this totally clear.

Nobody anywhere expected to work full-time or specified part-time hours should be employed on anything that resembles a ‘zero hours contract’.

They should be illegal for one main reason, it’s restriction of trade.

Back when it was just temp agencies doing the closest thing that was similar, you could sign up with as many as you like and whoever got you work that week (or weeks) won the prize. Your temp contract would come to an end (sometimes the same day) and you’d be free to take up work from another agency.

That’s the big difference. You weren’t under contract all the time, just for the specific job.

Definitely leaving this topic alone now.

Cheers also to BMCUW for the discussion.

    celtic are a plc

and like every plc, the ONLY show in town for the people who run it is for them to absolutely maximize their own pay and bonus packages

they dont care about the lives of the people who work for them in terms of their financial status, future financial stability or work life balance

unfortunately for employees, the ONLY people that those in charge of plcs have to answer to – the shareholders – also couldnt give a toss about any of those things

and with a legal structure that allows them to enact their greed, it is a perfect storm for the rest of us

  30. There’s a certain level of skill and judgement in running any business in working out how much labour you need to hire to allow the business to operate effectively. There is an associated level of risk in getting that calculation wrong.

Zero hours contracts transfer that risk to the employees.

    What’s not to like?

    Doubles all round!

“For Celtic, it’s entirely unnecessary because the demand profile on each department is known at the start of each season, and fluctuates only as far as knockout competition and other one-off events dictate.”

That’s the crux of this issue though. The club are recruiting the extra TO staff required for those fluctuations.

Otherwise they’d need to ask existing staff to work over their contracted hours, which they can’t and shouldn’t be forced to do.
