Utterly gallus under a Glasgow night sky

623

If Craig Gordon had the fortitude of his more vocal critics he would have crawled into a shell and you would be reading about a plucky Celtic defeat this morning. Fortunately for Celtic, Craig is grounded in solid earth.

He’s overcome greater challenges than his recent loss of form. Great to have you back, Craig.

Credit is due right across the back line, as well as to the goalkeeper, despite the loss of three goals. City have some of the finest attacking players currently plying their trade in Europe. A victory last night would have rewritten record books for English football clubs, but time and again Erik Sviatchenko and Kolo Toure timed runs, blocks and tackles perfectly.

I’m having trouble figuring out how Mikael Lustig can still put that kind of performance in. His fitness levels seemed to be inextricably heading south last season, but he’s back as good as ever. Kieran Tierney is that rare property, a left back with pace and endurance, who can defend and cross. He’ll continue to improve.

Tom Rogic was totally in control of what was an incredibly difficult area of the field to play football. Our performance levels followed the fuel in his tank. When he faded, we faded.

Brown and Bitton did very well too. Scott forced his influence onto the game in the first minute, which set the tempo.

I know Nir Bitton looks like he lacks urgency. In his own penalty area. With City players bearing down on him. On nights like this the easiest thing in the world is to play it long when under pressure. The hardest thing to do is to hold the ball, draw pressure but try to create space for others. It’s what the very top midfield players at the very top clubs do.  You’ll remember seeing the same from Nir in the second half.

Hands up if you thought James Forrest had this level of performance in him? His timed run from deep at the opening goal was straight from the training ground, but executed perfectly. We didn’t get him into the game often enough, but his work off the ball created space for Dembele.

Scott Sinclair was another who put in a brave performance; brave in the sense that he held the ball often under intense pressure. He looks like he’s enjoying life in Glasgow.

And what of Moussa? I doubt any of us knew the calibre of player we recruited. It was a gamble for the club and for the player, but it’s paid off for both, and how. His first goal was fortuitous – no bad thing in a striker. His second belied his age. It was utterly gallus. No other word for it.

Well done Brendan. I thought you got it wrong in Barcelona but you went toe-to-toe against the top manager in the world, who travelled home with plenty to think about.

What a great phenomenon this whole Champions League business is. Even Newco earned around £500 from selling stadium tours to visiting fans. Happy to help, guys.  High-fives all-round the city.

Thanks for the fantastic support for the Foundation ahead of the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon on Sunday.  I’m now carb-loading for the first time in my life.  It’s as much fun as it sounds.  Any more help greatly appreciated.

  1. EL MADRIGAL,you would be correct by saying that Kaka , (although I can’t honestly remember) scored what was deemed as the 2nd goal that night.

However, whilst the VAST majority of my bets in Celtic games will be a Celt to score first etc, occasionally over the years I may have had a gut feeling that an opposition p!ayer may score the first goal, only for the Celts to come roaring back ?

If memory one of my bets that night was KaKa 1st goal and Celts to win 2-1 in a scorecast beg. But it wouldn’t have been my main bet, just a wee sneaky comic bet ? I know where you are coming from , but gut feeling sometimes pay off, and that SHOULD have been the case that night v ACMilan.

  2. What about lining/up Griff and Moussa together from the start on Saturday?

    Radical, I know!

    HH!!

  3. Roger Hynd.?

Fond memories of watching the 67 ECW Final with a blue nose pal.He claimed that the Big lump got the Number 9 gig because John Lawrence insisted that Hynd played in preference to Willoughby..Makes sense in Deady Bear Land.Hynd was related to Bill Shankly and became a gym teacher !

  4. At half time there was an ad from one of the bookies that gave in play odds of Aguero to score next at 5/1. I thought that was a good offer….but that’s why I don’t bet ;)

“The relaxed attitude I felt, was in the knowledge that no matter the score, providing we put a credible performance in, we couldn’t lose.”

You’re a bigger man than me.

I am always nervous watching Celtic and especially hate to lose to English teams.

I was on and off my sofa like a jumping flee during the game.

  6. After a monumental effort last night, our team will, in about 45 hours time, be taking to the field once again in an effort to secure three more points in our quest to gain another League Title. To whom should Brendan bestow the task of gaining said points?

    Gordon.? I would say ` Yes `

Gamboa? Does Mikael need a wee rest?

Simunovic. Probably ready for a full ninety minutes.

    Svietchenko. No problem.

    Tierney/Izaguirre . 45 mins each

Roberts. Could do with ninety to recapture early season form.

Brown: Tremendous effort last night but we need him to start ( replace later with Armstrong)

    McGregor;

    Bitton,

    Sinclair

Griffiths / Dembele : Maybe an hour for Leigh and half an hour for Superbhoy?

    JJ ( On the bench).

As for intelligence, difficult call since we’ve never met but I doubt I would suggest anyone was thick and the post this.

As I said earlier, your serve. Think that was a double-fault. Looking forward to you upping your game.

Jozo for Kolo looks an obvious change and I think we might see the likes of McGregor & Christie getting a start and maybe Brown & Rogic being rested.

  15. Unbelievable last night. Stunning team performance… If I had to pick a MOM it would be either of the KT’s. There were points in the match where Kilo seemed to know where the City players were going to hit the ball before they did. I thought young KT looked a bit puffed just before half time but he did not stop running for ,90 mins

Like Corkcelt says, I have drawn a line under it and we move on.

    Hopefully lessons learned all round.

I think we will see Jozo, Griff and Roberts start on Saturday. Perhaps Gamboa too.

Dundee were quite useful last season, but they sold their two top players Stewart and Hemmings and Harkins is over the Clint.

I agree in theory, but, Jozo, Griff, Roberts and even Gamboa, need game time. Those they replace can sit on the bench.

  19. I see the polis are back on the 5 am raids, using handcuffs and overnight detention all for a couple of rubber dolls. Justifiable use of resources or chasing budgets from an anti Tim SNP, you tell me.

  20. What a wonderful game last night. It was brilliant that the players have the belief in their abilities to contest against a team of so called superstars.

Last night had everything, quality football, players and most all ATMOSPHERE !!!!!!!

Brenda has instilled in each player a belief to use their talent to improve individually and for team.

Celtic should play like that every game. Superb.

  21. Watching the game again. First 30 minutes are awesome! Nae wonder they don’t want us in the EPL.

  23. Haven’t been on for a while. Can’t say I ‘enjoyed’ the game last night having given my season card to my son and followed game on a really bad stream on hotel wifi in Capri. Fellow Morar Bhoys helped with update and while we were watching on 89 minutes they messaged to say FT 3-3. Fab. Moving into Positano tomorrow- any ideas if there might be somewhere where I can see the Dundee game? HH Great performance.

  24. Watching the game last night, it was great to hear Steve McManaman rave about Celtic’s approach and claim that all Premier League clubs should take note of how Celtic are pressing and attacking City and causing them problems.

  25. Seems to be a bit of furore about these rubber dolls………jist hope they are not a limited edition……..

  26. Marrakesh Express on

I’ve been listening to bbc 5 live and talksport all day and I can’t remember hearing so much praise about the Celtic park atmosphere. Pundits and ex players alike, even self confessed Hun Durham going on about us restoring their faith in the beautiful game. Compare tonight up here, starting with blue tie McKay’s grimacing boat race at six.

  27. I heard about the players who come from Africa and who have faked certificate of birth. Kolo Toure must be one of them. I guess he is 25 , maybe 26 now.

  28. Had a wee look on followfollow just to see how many magnanimous posts there might be regarding last night’s epic match. Oddly enough, I couldn’t find any at all.

However, I did enjoy this post from one particular berr who may have seen the light, God love him….

    ——————————————–

No one has to make anything up. Our results and league position tells all. A record of 5 wins in 17 tells it’s own story.

We have a manager who doesn’t see the need to watch the opposition. That is as big an act of folly as it is in bad management and arrogance.

We have a manager who disappeared for six weeks in silence after the most explosive cup final in years. Not one word. Previously, you couldn’t keep him out of the mhedia. Everyone chose to bury their head in the sand and ignore it. I see a chasm between him and the Director in abstentia. I see a manager treading water.

Let’s get real here, we have players of limited ability. This group will not win anything. It’s not their fault and little point in singling them out and berating them every week. They are not fit for purpose to win this league this season or any other and MW is delusional if he thinks they can. I am sure he isn’t and only tells us what we want to hear. Only with a step up in quality can we ever hope to achieve that and therein lies our systemic problem. We don’t have the money to do so.

Give him time we cry. Well with that attitude, just how many £30mil CL windfall payments do we want the scum to have to increase the financial chasm between us. Their next one is already well under way and that gives a 60 mil gap before we even start next season. Are we so deluded or arrogant enough to believe the scum are going to just wait and let us play catch up?! Just to throw it in, I also have a theory that the scum are involved in some treachery re the proposed new CL format, with the SPFL being complicit in it and the scum will be part of the new set up, being given a wild card. In a way, I can’t blame them In looking after their own, unlike some it has to be said.

For us the bottom line is we have a squad of players with limited ability and we are cash strapped, in being impotent to do little about it. There will be no challenge to the scum now, nor for the foreseeble future. No matter the wishfull thinking. The scum are building up a financial chasm between us and them, relatively speaking as big as the chasm between the EP and the SPFL. Whether we are in support of Warburton or not, matters not a jot. We are just not financially equipped to take them on. Not fit for purpose and all more in hope than expectation.

What is the board’s strategy to change all of this? Empty rhetoric and not even much of that. They have none. They can see no further than our pound sitting at the end of their nose. Until the fan base wake up to that, we shall be for the foreseeable future in the slip stream of the scum. The signs are all there. Deny them at our peril.
