Vacancy for a coach to challenge O’Neill orthodoxy

914

If/when minds at Celtic get around to considering a replacement for Alan Thompson it would also be wise to recognise the international nature of the game.  Lennon, Mjallby, Parker and Thompson were all football sons of Martin O’Neill, rooted in the domestic tradition of the game (even the Swede).

Football philosophy drifts slowly between national boundaries carried by successful coaches and players.  Right now the ambitious teams in the world are trying to ape the Barcelona/Spain model, the success of which is hard to argue with, but whether we look for a Spanish influence or not, we must surely look for a voice to challenge what the current management team regard as orthodoxy, in all aspects of the job.

  1. As someone mentioned dietary and fitness I was worried when Wigan bought Maloney Martinez said he was not fit enough for pro footballer and was few months before we saw a lean and fitter Shaun. And he was excellent for them .. That worries me.

  2. TerryONeill Neil ah love yae on

Ah actually think that Neil Lennon knows already how he wants to play and what tactics to employ.

For me its more important that we get the correct players in for him and us to progress.

Ah believe a number 10, a physical number 9, two centre halfs an possibly a goalkeeper will enable Neil Lennon to fufill his vision more than any fresh tactical input.

“When we got beat 3-2 by Rangers (ia) their 2 full backs Wallace and Whittaker had a field day bombing forward, with McCabe in midfield spraying passes about”

At times they even looked like they had an extra man or two on the pitch…

  4. Guardiola !!??? I think there has been too much jubilating going on, get a grip. I do agree about levels of fitness, I understand that players will naturally allow standards to slip in the dungheap of the SPL. I believe that players who have left the SPL, Caldwell, Maloney , Jelavic all had to up their fitness before they got up to EPL levels. I looked at Caldwell and McGeady recently and they looked stronger and leaner than when they played for us.

I saw us tire in the last twebty minutes against AM and Udinese as better technique and I think better preparation took effect.

  5. The press were gushing about McCabe after the 3-2, I thought playing against 9 men might have helped him to look good!! Has he signed for Cowdenbeath yet!!

It is easy to sit down ,after a game, and analysed what went wrong.it is harder to do during a game, this is where I think we are lacking.New ideas are needed in the coaching staff, only my opinion of course,I will bow to superior knowledge.

My intention wasn’t, and isn’t, to begin another WGS or MON debate. I’m just of the opinion that Strachan’s teams weren’t defeated in big European games as a consequence of lack of fitness or inappropriate diets but simply because they came up against better footballers.

  9. I think Martinez meant that Maloney didn’t have the physical strength at first – witness all his injuries, rather than simply being unfit.

  10. LENNYisAwarMACHINE on

Proudbhoy – maybe thats why he never kicked a ball fir us fir a year. Or maybe nit being fit fir a year MADE him lack said fitness.

    Just a thought.

  11. I understand all that’s being said….and I appreciate it…that is why I,and many others, ask questions and posit ideas on this site. Guaranteed to get informed opinion, analysis and information. And if my thinking is muddled,or ill informed, I’ll soon get set straight. And that is fine by me.

    Off to watch a movie.

    HH!

    :-)

  12. Fanadpatriot, True. But Lenny has changed tactics many time during games for the better loads of times.

The games most people think about are Killie and Hearts both in cups. Luck played a huge part in both games and bad refereeing not just tactics.

If Guardiola is too busy we could do worse than look to Europe for a plan. I feel that in Europe games our lack of technique and confidence on the ball is the killer.

We rarely appear comfortable in possession.

I would like to see the club adopt technical skills with the young players that can change the way we play. Possession is the new king, have the ball and it’s easier to defend.

Send the youth coaches to Europe and see how the children develop. Basing our youth development on Barcelona or Ajax is a waste of time as those clubs have the advantage of schooling the players as well. Good habits aren’t only for the pitch.

We are currently in not too bad a place with what we have but things can always improve.

Fair enough, wonder what the odds are for the Celts to reach last 16 of CL next season….could be worth a punt.

    Jist sayin…

  15. Petethebeat, i remember martinez said Maloney wasnt ready as he had to learn to play football when the opposition had the ball. He said when he played for Celtic, Celtic always had nearly 70% of the play while at Wigan, Wigan only have it 35-40%.

    SffS

  16. Martinez meant that Maloney never had to chase the ball down while at Celtic, whereas at Wigan he was expected to do basically the opposite to what he was trained for.

If Platini’s Financial Fair Play comes to pass, the best league in Europe, where the top teams appear to live within their means and do not carry hundreds of millions in debt, will surely the Bundesliga. With a bit of luck Bayern would have won the CL, they are far superior on every level to Chelsea.

Within Germany, the attention to tactics, fitness and skill far surpass that in the EPL where the reliance is simply on buying success. Spanish clubs are mostly laden with debt and Italy is sinking in scandal after scandal.

Germany is perhaps a good place to find coaching and football inspiration?

    ————————————–

I think this summer has already shown that the FFP won’t work, the Chelsea spending has been ridiculous, and Man City will follow suit. There’s no way those two teams can meet the FFP and there’s no way they’ll be banned from the CL.

Ur right ,that’s what he said .

Which to me translates that he’s not fit enough to chase down ball for 90mins. Should be eapcially when we are looking to play in Europe where we will play teams who keep ball a lot.

Strachan by all accounts was a strict disciplinarian and a large part of his regime was built on diet and fitness. Under his tenure we reached the dizzy heights of the last 16 of the Champion’s League on two occasions.

In my opinion this was done with a poorer standard of player than MON had at his disposal during his time in charge. I think that this is testimony to the fitness and organisation which was in place whilst WGS was at the helm. I don’t ever recall us running out of steam just that we were beaten by better, more skillful players.

    …………………………

I still have nightmares in which I see Jim McIntyre at Hampden running away from Steven Pressley who looks like he is running in sand.

Steven was a great man in the dressing room apparently and was never a minute late.

I’ve felt we don’t produce many defenders through the ranks because of the possession we have.

Most of the time we are attacking at youth level as well as top team and the players are often not good defensively.

The last good defender I think we developed was John Kennedy.

Caddis and Crainey were better going forward and O’Dea and McManus had poor concentration, though often did well in games when we were under pressure.

  25. I’m going to put my tin hat on here.

If I was Neil Lennon I wouldn’t consider Henrik Larrson for a coaching role at Celtic, not for an instant.

Why? The media would use Henrik to undermine Neil at every opportunity.

I’m not suggesting for a second that either Henkrik or Neil would allow them to, but a section of the fans still rely on the MSM for news.

Who can compete for the affection of the fans with such an icon.

We need one clear leader, one figurehead. That is Neil Lennon.

Please be clear I love Henrik Larsson(in a manly, heroic way).

As I said tin hat on.

  26. Ok- outvoted on Maloney!

Imagine how good BBJ would have been, if he could have stayed away from the burgers.

  27. Celtic’s fitness coaching and dietary regime is open to question. On the one hand you have the likes of Maloney, McGeady and Boruc looking leaner, fitter and faster when they leave us and then you have the likes of Commons coming in and piling on the pounds.

I remember the Polish coach having to put Boruc through a crash-diet regime to get him fit for major championships when he was with Celtic.

  28. I’m all for the idea of bringing in a foreign coach, new ideas, new methods. Doesn’t have to be a household name just someone who knows the game, has experience at the high levels. I was sorry to see the french guy leave that Strachan brought in, McGeady paid tribute to his coaching in particular saying he added pace to his game something we are sadly lacking.

Under O’Neill we could press teams for an hour or so but then ran out of steam, Strachan had the side organized but still lacking. Lennon has surely been involved in enough European games to know what is required..especially away from home where away goals can be absolutely vital.

Sadly we are still looking to build the spine of the side, hope we don’t wait too long on Forster making his mind up….make an offer, wait a week and move on.

  29. Hamiltontim

I don’t ever recall us running out of steam just that we were beaten by better, more skillful players.

And in the case of Milan, we could have had a penalty and only for some brilliance from Kaka and an error from Sno, we could have went even further that year. I also think Milan won the trophy that season.

Thanks, I think I’ll keep the hat on for a bit yet.

Neil would end up fielding questions about Henrik at every press conference.

The MSM would use it as a weapon.

  32. To be fair to Pressley, he did ok when coming on the Shaktar 2-1 game. Poor John Kennedy had gifted them a goal and was then carried off. I think that was his last game for Celtic as well.Very sad.

Anyway, I thought Elvis was going to be taken apart but thankfully, I was wiong.

Possibly, Jiri Jarosik’s best game for Celtic too, btw.
