Vacancy for a coach to challenge O’Neill orthodoxy

914

If/when minds at Celtic get around to considering a replacement for Alan Thompson it would also be wise to recognise the international nature of the game.  Lennon, Mjallby, Parker and Thompson were all football sons of Martin O’Neill, rooted in the domestic tradition of the game (even the Swede).

Football philosophy drifts slowly between national boundaries carried by successful coaches and players.  Right now the ambitious teams in the world are trying to ape the Barcelona/Spain model, the success of which is hard to argue with, but whether we look for a Spanish influence or not, we must surely look for a voice to challenge what the current management team regard as orthodoxy, in all aspects of the job.

I should be astonished that the MSM have not picked up on this.

I should be astonished that the IFAC and the RICS have not taken this up.

I am predictably saddened that yet again, cheating is going un-punished

  2. I see Celtic have dismissed ‘popular’ Alan Thompson and tomorrow’s DR will no doubt say that AT was the brains behind Celtic’s title win.

I am a level 2 coach in England and coach 4 to 10 year olds. Have to say that The FA have spent the past 4 years to come up up with what I think is an excellent strategy to develop young players, and not just at Elite level.

They have launched a Youth Module pathway,

    Module 1 developing the environment

    Module 2 developing the practice

    Module 3 developing the player.

I have completed modules 1 and 2, and have to say they are fantastic. These a relatively new, and most of the other coaches on these courses come from the academies.I am due to due Module 3, which is a Uefa B qualification in the autumn. After completion, I will have to take one of my youth teams to a designated centre of excellence where I will be assessed, and then a two hour grilling.

They get us to focus on what they call the four corners- namely Physical, Technical, Social and Psycological aspects of all the boys and girls we coach. We assess where a player is ‘ relatively’ in each of these four areas. You may have a player who is 11 years old, but techinically a 13 year old, however physically he may be 10 years old, and psycologically younger still. Just being aware and not being flattered by the more physically advanced as we tend to in the UK.

My mentor coached amongst other top level players, Gareth Bale and it is no secret that he was the last player Southampton selected for their scholar intake that year. Amazingly because he was not as developed physically and also socially he was a very quite lad. As a coach you have to understand where they are along their individual path to reach the maximum potential. Two years later he had played a handful of games for the first team, then a call up for Wales and transferred to Spurs. Again, still not ready to play first team football they spent a year beefing him up. It makes you wonder how many players, equally gifted who had coaches who did not see where the player was on their path to maximum potential, or who was just plain quiet and did not fit in.

The main focus has to be the Technical side of the game. There is no point playing matches until players have reached a competence in the basics, No doubt you base your game practices and exrecises on the 4 v 4 model which the Dutch began ( Gus Hiddink) and which the Spanish are now masters of.

As of 2014 season, under 7 and Under 8’s are not allowed to play more than 5 v 5 matches. To be honest I have pulled these age groups out of our league, and will spend the time they would have been playing matches on more coaching.

I watch games 7 or 8 a side, where two or three strong players from both teams dominate possession. In the main, an absolute waste of time for all concerned. By matching players up in smaller games, the players will develop.

If you have read Daniel Coyles book The Talent Code, you will then understand how all this fits in. ‘Talented’ people are not born talented, its having the ignition, good coaching and their own desire (hard work) to keep improving that will make them exceptional. If we allow such potential to be stunted at the very beginning by allowing physicality to overshadow kids no so physicaly advancedl, or technical able players then we will not move forward.

This has to be top down, with everyone involved in youth football in Scotland.

I thought the reason was that Celtic didn’t want all the good work put in by their coaches being undone by amateurs.

Wasn’t the reason McGeady chose Ireland rather than Scotland something to do with the fact that he didn’t play for his school team so therefore wasn’t available for the national set up?

Whoever comes in has to finally address a few glaring problems that have never been addressed never mind solved. That starts with recruitment of the proper players that can actually do what is asked of them.

I love the enthusiasm of those who watch what they call ‘brilliant’ TV series.

Are the really impressed by sad, self-promoting ‘actors’ pretending to be involved in fantastic dramas.

Are there not enough ACTUAL dramas, past & present, to hold our attention.

    Nah. Real life is BORING.

    History is BORING.

What matters is guys lying on the floor of a studio, pretending to be hanging over the edge of a cliff.

    Now, thats exciting !

I have NEVER understood how anybody could be interested in untalented people pretending to be somebody else, who is involved in some vaguely interesting situation, which is a constantly changing figment of some other guys imagination.

Are there not enough REAL dramas going on in our mad world ?

Don’t know if you seen my post in the early hours of one morning, but a group of us went to Munich in February and got tickets last minute by using the viagogo munich website. Buy tickets, turn up at the ground and pick up tickets. Smooth and no hassle.

Also plenty of tickets available on the way to the ground though you can never guarantee enough for a large group.

Once in stadium, behind the goal, great atmosphere though I wanted Wolfsburg to win (they play in green:O).

We suffer from our gung ho style in the full back area due to giving them the job of bringing the ball out.

I would prefer to see our fulbacks coming into play later but due to non footballing centre backs we suffer.
