Value of January signings

567

After the fright we got at the Falkirk Stadium last month there was significant trepidation ahead of yesterday’s game.  The newly-promoted side who exited the League Cup after a 4-1 defeat at Celtic Park in August have grown in stature and look certain for a top six finish.

For all that Falkirk put into this game, they did not have the players to make the clinical difference.  For that quality, Celtic turned to Tomas Cvancara and Benjamin Nygren.  As every football fans knows, a new striker needs to get off the mark early.  Otherwise, he is cursed with “XX games without a goal” references.  Cvancara’s contribution at Tynecastle a week earlier gave Celtic the lead.  His deft header in the first half against Falkirk turned a low-probability chance into a welcome lead.

You and I discuss Benji Nygren regularly.  If we win anything this season, it will be significantly due to the goals he has scored and created.  There is an expectation when he lines up a shot which does not exist with any other Celtic player.

Man of the Match yesterday deservedly went to Julian Araujo.  He successfully linked with Yang in the first half and even-more so with James Forrest in the second.  Martin O’Neill can reflect that our win was largely due to the value of our two January signings.

A point in yesterday’s officials.  Like the referee, I didn’t see the two-handed push on Daizen Maeda which moved him into the way of Araujo’s shot.  Sebastian Tounetki scored with the rebound.

As a consequence of an attacking player being fouled inside the penalty box, he was adjudged to be offside and a goal was disallowed.  It is scenarios like this which VAR was intended to deal with.  That VAR confirmed the offside is inexplicable.

Let’s hope for a busy evening!

45 mins to go in EPL window.

‘Bring out your dead’……we have just under 4 hours to register any EPL deadwood offered up by shady agents. With a 6 month loan. And no buy option.

    World class basics.

  2. Real pity about Engels. It never works to have players who dont want to be here hanging around.

We have 3 or 4 sadly.

Hopefully this is an indicator of future value and the lad can kick on.

What is clear to me is the mammoth task ahead for our next management team next summer. Even if it is the same as current then our squad will still need about 8 players.

  3. Tim Malone Will Tell on

Junior Amadu signing shows no ambition by ra board – you would think with all that money in the bank we could have afforded a Senior Amadu.

  4. Arthur is on the verge of breaking into the Brentford team. Why would you swap the Brentford bench for our bench unless you think you are actually going to get a good few games?

  5. Maybe the board will now realise that if you speculate you can accumulate…not be frightened to buy the acquired quality

Well done BR ….you were right all along !!!

  6. Brentford defender, 3 appearances in his whole career.

    Board out, clueless & embarrassing.

    Shots fired!!!

  8. Arthur is on the record as saying he models himself on VVD. Right footed, but been played on the left. Supposed to be an absolute stand out in their B team.

Amazed they didn’t sell,Engels for that money.

Perhaps you’ve got it wrong about them!

  10. Palace …interested in Trusty ….almost certainly a decent profit there as well ….never catch on

  11. I assume with 25 mins to go, there is no time for a 4th bid for Engels? If a medical needs to be done etc. etc.

  12. Unbelievable this board,

Refused to play a guy from Man Citys B team who is now starting every week in the Bundesliga and are now replacing him with a guy from Brentfords B team 😂

Arthur has made the squad/bench for a few Brentford games this season – but Brentford are well endowed with central defenders and he would currently be 5th choice.

Every chance one or two of those ahead of him will depart in the summer – so I would think that Brentford see him as having a future and will want him back.

Sometimes you see deals in England, getting an extra couple of hours to sort out stuff

  15. It was Lawwell who fed the narrative to Desmond that Engels was an expensive mistake.

Desmond was duped as he was when he entered the dressing and headed to showers to offer Lennon the job. (Mitigating circumstances Francois Faivleys rouge was partaken).

Desmond has no excuses he fell for another Lawwell

    Manoeuvres.

We now have another disgruntled player to join our two Japanese players. Bad news.

Nicholson could have traded us out of this mess. Way beyond his capabilities and he is drowning in his own incompetence.

The axe cannot quick enough for this buffoon.

  16. I would be amazed if we don’t take the Engels deal, anyone I’m in touch with, say take it…

  17. MON should tell Engels that he’s good enough to play on the EPL, so should put in a strong second half of the season to show his ability and value to English teams in the mid to upper echelons of the EPL. Forest are a couple of decent West Ham results from the relegation zone… and there are only 3 teams in that league with more points than West Ham in the last 3 games, so Forest’s prospects might be looking somewhat less attractive sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile we could offer Forest Hatate for half the quoted fee as an alternative.

  18. If there is an intention to sign there is a 2hr extension but it must have the necessary paperwork to allow this.

  19. Lucky Cody- we could indeed have traded our way through this, use Engels money for a CB ,2 midfielders, another winger maybe,Mahwanese, and still made a profit

  20. How was Rodgers correct if “HE” spent big money on Idah, Trusty, Engels, and kept them on the bench as “HE” sleekitly whined for more players whilst “HE” Rodgered Celtic out of £40 Million CL Money?

The board should have removed Rodgers and all of his speaking out of both sides of his mouth toxicity straight after the Rodgers [engineered] Kiarat disaster!.

Then again, a supporter base, the vast MAJORITY of whom, bathed themselves in SNP Toxicity for SEVENTEEN YEARS, were well hooked onto the Rodgers toxicity drug.

God help us when MON leaves.

  21. I assume with the window closed in England, Kenny remains with us? Despite two new forwards arriving? Bolton were supposed to be in for him.
