Value of Ledley’s back post goals

764

Celtic didn’t hit the heights of last week’s win at Tynecastle against Inverness last night but it was a remarkably controlled win nonetheless.  The game could have been over as a contest in the opening minutes but as the lead didn’t extend beyond a single goal the contest retained an edge.

Daniel Majstorovic was incorrectly penalised when he correctly challenged for the ball 25 yards from goal but the Swede’s lax initial response to the forward ball created the situation that resulted in his red card.  Dan had a painful game against Inverness last season but after they were reduced to 10 men Celtic were far too composed to let Inverness’ numerical advantage count.

We’ve spoken about the value of goals from midfield in recent seasons.  Kris Commons lit up Celtic’s season when he arrived in a flurry of goals last year but Joe Ledley’s efforts from the back post this season could prove to be even more important.

The notion that the custodians of Celtic would take a risk in not allowing rangers to re-emerge is utter fantasy.

The owners of the club we support or follow have demonstrated an extreme avertion to risk since 2003 and the current economic climate makes them even more so.

They would never risk on the ‘unknown’ outcome of rangers being removed from football in scotland. This will be likely to extend to their being allowed to compete in the spl as a newco…..

It will be for PL (with hands tied behind his back) to negotiate the compromise solution, which will have limited sanctions…

This will be at the bidding of the owners not the board in my view.

I have thought that since 2009. Its decision time. If Celtic dont put the proverbial boot in I’m offsky and a lot of others too. The huns would. They almost did.

  4. Barcabhoy et al

The information I have is to the contrary.

My understanding is the board are as set against this as the supporters, however their worry is they can do little about it.

If it comes to light that the board do not fight against the entry of newco straight into the SPL, I will never set foot in Celtic Park as long as they are running our club.

Let me be clear, this is not of the board’s making, however they have a duty and obligation to uphold the traditions and morals of our club and family. Not to do so would signal the start of the end of Celtic Football Club. It is shameful that the huns have brought this on Scottish Football and Celtic, but they have and we need the plc board to deal with it, if they deal with it in the manner you’re suggesting, there will be no plc in the future, or if there is it will be of little importance.

There would be no integrity whatsoever left in the Scottish game and no integrity remaining in our boardroom. They will have endorsed everything that Rangers have stood for in their history, they will have endorsed the financial doping and cheating of a club who have brought financial ruin not only to themselves but almost to Celtic and almost certainly a number of other Scottish clubs, they will have signed our own death warrant.

My understanding is that our board will vehemently oppose the re-entry of a huns newco straight into the spl for the right reasons (the integrity of our game), while also recognising it would signal a massive loss of support and season tickets, if they allow it to happen without a fight.

We don’t want rfc to be treated any worse than any other club, we don’t want them to be treated any better – simply apply the rules as they currently exist. No commercial or other decisions come into play, use the rules, protect the integrity of the Scottish game.

The lack of vision of those connected with our game is worrying, this should be viewed as the biggest ooportunity in modern times to restructure our game for the better, to build a sustainable environment for Scottish Football to flourish. Celtic and the other SPL clubs should be grabbing this with both hands and look at the long term benefits.

rfc newco will come back in some form, hopefully with a bit of humility (we can dream), irrespective, the newco should never be allowed to do what their predecessor did, a way to try and help avoid this is to ensure newco start afresh – from the bottom.

The media in Scotland have been pushing hard for re-entry straight into the spl, (leaving aside their argument of Scottish football needs them – it’s the media that needs them), it is galling when the subject of punishment of the newco is raised, the line then is you can’t punish the newco as they are not responsible for the oldco misdemeanours, this really gets my blood boiling. If the newco want the benefit of some of the oldco’s things (like points accumulated, license to play in the league) then they must accept punishment for some of the oldco’s wrongs – at the very least. BEST CASE scenario for the huns should be they have multiple years starting with a points deduction and any trophies won during EBT years erased.

The media in Scotland also seem to think Scottish Football is the SPL and have totally ignored the positive effect on our game if newco started at the bottom, imagine the boost to the SFL clubs with newco playing up through the leagues. The media are pushing hard to protect their own livelihoods, which I can fully understand – they however fail to see any big picture other than one of doom and gloom without the huns playing top flight football, something for which they are partly responsible for with their fawning over SDM and total ignorance of what was really happening.

  6. If Peter Lawwell is one of the hawks, then, as far as I am concerned, it may be the defining moment of his Chief Executive tenure.

If he can show that it may be more beneficial in the long term interest of the club that there is no newco, and remember Desmond Dermott does like a long term plan, then the Hawks will win this one….por cierto.

    There is a difference though.

There is a risk either way and the alternative may be considered worse…

The vast majority of Celtic fans would not buy it, on no account.

  9. Burnley78,

If the Celtic board and owners talk to any Celtic supporter they will know there is more risk in being complicit in Newco coming back into the SPL.

The dream scenario for the SPL (not you or I or the rest of the Celtic support) is that Newco come back in and the rivalry cranks up another 12 notches.

The Celtic board and owners should not underestimate their supports ability to mobilise. This is not a support used to docile acceptance.

Not so long ago Estadio stated that something was going to happen, and this would make us all proud of Peter Lawwell and we would see him in a new light.

It may well come down to what UEFA decide anyway,it could be out of our hands, the SFA and the other clubs.Platini has already stated his intention to wage war on financial mis-management in football.

A dangerous precedence would be set if the huns were allowed to start off again with a clean slate. What example would that be setting to all the other clubs in Europe?

Financial doping is what it is,and it needs to be stopped.

  14. Re the board and a newco.

Our board are our board because they are men who have demonstrated that they are good business men, and are in their respective fields have a knack for rising to the top of their profession.

They must realise that any newco will be just that a newco, who may have a hardcore of support, but the support will be nothing like it is now.

No way on gods earth will a newco support turn out to watch a mid table team, hence no being able to charge 42 brit pounds for a ticket for a derby game.

    Our board must realise this.

Not having the hun around will also greatly enhance our chance of vacating this sectarian hell hole, and Dermo wants out to where the money is.

You have my vote with this. If Newco is to be considered for the SPL then DD will most certainly have final say. Our authentic, ACTUAL billionaire would use this position to its maximum advantage, and probably has the facts when we are merely guessing.

A man of DD’s business acumen could introduce an income stream to compensate for TV money shortfall without the Huns. One thing’s for sure; DD wants Celtic in the EPL and if it doesn’t happen while the Huns are out of business or in Div 3 then it probably never will. The wheels on that are probably already in motion.

  18. The owners of our club have shown a strong aversion to risk (in some cases to their credit) since 2003.

They failed hugely in grasping the exit option to the Champinoship in 2004/5…..we could be in EPL now even if we had taken the 3 year promotion moritorium option.

They will certainly not take the risk despite the huffing and puffing on here.

PL will have a tough job to negotiate with the other self interested SPL folks to get a deal that will come close to meeting the massive abuses which rangers successive owners have perpetrated on the game in scotland and the wider financially abused companies and entities.

A difficult situation but one where self interest will rule not justice.

this isnt directed at you in particular, speculating on how the board will vote is dangerous enough, speculating on how individual board members will vote based on hearsay is even worse. the implications of someone on the board being thought of as a hun sympathiser by large numbers of our support is very serious. it could finish them at celtic
