Value of Ledley’s back post goals

764

Celtic didn’t hit the heights of last week’s win at Tynecastle against Inverness last night but it was a remarkably controlled win nonetheless.  The game could have been over as a contest in the opening minutes but as the lead didn’t extend beyond a single goal the contest retained an edge.

Daniel Majstorovic was incorrectly penalised when he correctly challenged for the ball 25 yards from goal but the Swede’s lax initial response to the forward ball created the situation that resulted in his red card.  Dan had a painful game against Inverness last season but after they were reduced to 10 men Celtic were far too composed to let Inverness’ numerical advantage count.

We’ve spoken about the value of goals from midfield in recent seasons.  Kris Commons lit up Celtic’s season when he arrived in a flurry of goals last year but Joe Ledley’s efforts from the back post this season could prove to be even more important.

I really enjoy a tall glass of Peroni, especially in an Italian restaurant or pub.

A bit like having a Cobra in the Indian restaurant.

A bit like having Tsingtao in the Chinese restaurant.

Mind you maybe all of that’s because I usually have to choos from a list of BudLight and Millerlight here in the US.

The confounding factor in assessing the performance of our centre-halfs…

Who is the partner……Loovens ‘did’ for Caldwell,O’Dea,…and McManus,to a lesser extent.

If you cannot depend on your partner,to the extent that is the case when Loovens is playing, your own game can be severely affected…

If we had Baresi on the books,he probably would rather have gone out on loan to Doncaster, than muddle along with Loovens, and have his reputation damaged..

  5. 4 games v the darkside.

As some will know, my memory plays tricks on me from time to time. I remember losing a bet to a mate having convinced myself Lou Macari scored our consolation goal v the Jags in the 4-1 final.

Anyhow – sitting this afternoon my mind went back to games v admin fc and these games are there somewhere in my mind but I struggle for dates/detail. Anyone remember these 4?

A double header in a 7 day period. We won both. I think 3-0 and 2-0 (or 1-0) and seem to recall one of the games fell on a St Patricks day weekend. Is that so? Was someone sent off (maybe even 2 players dismissed in one of those games?

A game at CP at a time when I seem to think we hadn’t got the better of them for some time. Frosty night and straw around track? Joe Craig belter for a 1-0? Is that accurate and was it our first win for a while?

A game on a sat afternoon at CP, which I went to having come direct from a “maggie maggie maggoe – out -out -out protest in Glasgow earlier inthe morning? I’m guessing then early 80’s given Thatcher’s period in power? We won and it may have been 3-1 or 3-2? Big Roy or maybe Willie McStay scored?

    Am I even close???

    Thanks in advance

  6. When I watch Joe Joe Super Joe I’m reminded of John Clark.

Even watching him at the game rather than on TV I would bet

he is very inconspicuous. It seems opponents try to get through our

midfield somewhere other than Joe’s position. And hes not all over

the the broadcast of the game either. Both those points have been mentioned

on this thread already. Like John Clark he is very quite on the park until,

“Oh! look, there’s Joe Ledley scoring another a goal”

The major difference is John Clark was not a goal scorer,

but he does have a European Cup medal though!

As its their parent company’s declared policy to secure debt via credit default insurance then perhaps they would not necessarily need to demand any other security since the default would be covered by the insurance?

  9. It was good to some faces to monikers at the quiz last night.

The quiz was of a high standard, eclipsed by the knowledge of some especially the guys who sat in the chair

Joe Craigs winner against the huns was my last visit to ibrox for a Celtic v huns game.

  11. twistsandturns

The Joe Craig goal was at Ibrox on a cold winter night there was a bus strike and had to walk from Castlemilk and back. By F*** it was worth it though.

  12. Sorry I should also mentioned Taggsbhoy for getting it togethwe and BRHT? for a very moving speech (are you by any chance in the legal profession?) Paul67 was,nt bad either Hail Hail Hebcelt

So the Joe Craig game was at Mordor? Thanks – I thought CP.

Hurlock/Hateley – perhaps mate, I honestly can’t remember. Hurlock? Hmmm. Rings a faint bell Phil.

  14. T n t

The double header was 1991? we knocked them out the cup on St Patrick’s day then on the following Sunday (Palm Sunday) we beat them 3-0 in the league.

From memory 3 huns were red carded and Grant sent off for us.

Ps I think the cup game was the first time we mocked them by mimicking the billy boys with the words “ha ha” instead.

  17. man city wont win the league this year

looked poor in a lot of games this year – liverpoo, everton and now villa

  18. The Singing Detective……

I can’t believe these players have become bad players. Dan has international experience for a better national side than ours, Loovens was highly rated in a better league than ours and Caldwell was player of the year. I think getting the midfield balance is key and we’ve looked far more assured since Wanyama has been blooded in.

In my opinion, Mulgrew has to play centre-back right now as he’s probably our best defender when in that position.

my daughters bday is the 16th March. She has booked tickets ( my present) for the St Patrick’s dance at CP. She attended last year and thought it was brilliant.

Good to see Joe getting some long overdue appreciation on these pages..

He has gamely filled in at left back,in an unfamiliar role, for much of his time here.

Long overdue that he is getting to play in his most effective position.

Did he get booked for waving the corner flag yesterday ?

    He’ll be getting tattoos next……

  22. Philbhoy – It’s just the beginning!……

Don’t know if we’ve had a run-in in the past – I post so infrequently that I every much doubt it, but if we have could you remind me? If we haven’t, could you tell me what authority you have to tell me, or indeed anyone, to “beat it”?

  23. Joe Ledley is a smashing player. Think Neil lennon with goals and you’ve got it. He’s not, however, a Makalele type, having more in his locker as regards goals. He’s not up to Makalele class—yet. He is improving all the time, an indispensible part of the team. Sammi, on the other hand, would walk the EPL used properly. I laugh when I think that Stuart Pearce was his manager at Man City. How that guy went to the England setup defies logic, although they did it before. Peter Taylor had the England U 21 squad playing great football with good results. The EnglishFA, in their wisdom, replaced him with David Pleat, (the World Cup David Pleat, not the ex Spurs manager). Cue woeful performances and morale within the camp. Taylor was never the same after it. That’s the reason they would never appoint Clough, and Martin O’Neill is in the same mould as Clough.

Im a bit like that too , loads of memorys about games but trying to place times etc is murder. Can anybody remember a game against aberdeen at CP ,early-mid 70s , Danny Mcgrain was just starting out. We won either 1 nil or 2-1 and bobby lennox scored the winner direct from a free kick and the ball ended up stuck in the net between the bar and the post at the stanchion!! Reason I ask is it was one of my first games at CP with my dad and would love to know just when that was

    Roddybhoy

  26. the sudden burst of midfield goal scoring may come from our coaches trusting them to know when to attack the last third.

Our only goal scoring threat used to comes from wide crosses or individual skill.

We still could have more shots on goal from our possession and that’s a definite area that needs improving.

As the team and coaches confidence improves then hopefully we will be more potent.

Hoping guys like McGeough and Rabu can inject a little more flair to our side.
