VAR Manager with clean hands

133

We are a small country with a small talent pool.  You see evidence of this on the field at international tournaments (or more commonly, the qualification stage).  Despite this, we expect elite performance from our officials, who are held to a higher standard than even Celtic are, when compared to Europe’s elite clubs.

The SPFL (previously SPL) have had a chief exec from outside Scotland since 2009, a period during which the Wisdom of Solomon was required.  Yesterday, the SFA appointed their first VAR Manager – Jon Moss, a former top-flight referee in England.

Our implementation of VAR under the previous Head of Referees, Crawford Allan, was very poor.  Allan was out of his depth, and forced the country to endure enforcement which was clearly nonsense, until the December 2022 World Cup gave him a chance to reset guidance.

Since then, guidance, enforcement and confidence have varied.  We needed change.  Rightly or wrongly, the VAR Manager is going to get the blame for a lot of things.  Recruiting someone from outside our intense patch of land might be the wisest thing new Head of Refereeing, Willie Collum, ever does.

People will still moan about mistakes, they will still accuse referees and their overlords of bias, but the VAR Manager has clean hands.  This is a very good thing.

  1. Chairbhoy,

Thanks.Nearly helps.Run it for Celtic, meaning Celtic employ them,or run it for Celtic, meaning they rent the facilities, and pay for the use.

  2. !!Bada Bing!! on

A boy on here last week was told from someone close to Idah,Norwich want £7.3 million

  3. Maybe kyogo looking injured for a few minutes at the weekend has caused a bottle crash in the slow moving boardroom.

  4. Bada ,

It was myself that posted it last week .

P67 leading article the next day said it was nearer £12m Norwich wanted . .

  5. TURKEYBHOY @ 7:35 PM,

Not altogether sure, I believe they have a few different models – Celtic can pay them to be caterers and take the profits from that or Sodexo can pay Celtic and run the facilities

Will check with my pal when he’s back from Bali…

Just thought my youngest is a manager for sedexo as well but in a very different division…

Greenpinta, May be wrong, but do Celtic not rent out the space to Caterers only.?

*as do airports train stations etc and its usually for a % of the gross revenue or a minimum annual guarantee.

  10. TOM MCLAUGHLIN @ 7:59 PM,

Yes, it was actually P67 in the lead that compared Moss and Doncaster not I…

I see N. Doncaster in the light of Senor MacHiavelli rather than the revered King of Isreal…

    Evening all.

The one guy I personally would have loved to manage was Brian Clough.”

Brian Clough was the Honorary President of a team I played for in the East Midlands ( of England).

He came to our Annual End-of-Season event one year and I had a lengthy conversation with him ( About Socialism ! ) and found him excellent company.

If he had ever become the manager of Celtic, his relationship with the Media in Scotland would have been interesting !

  16. The £12 million was a red herring to buy time, that’s the fantasy stuff the SMSM was firing out for Kent and Fat Charlie

  17. CELTIC: Hey Norwich! Celtic here, we’d like to offer somewhere between 6-8mill for Adam…

NORWICH: Emm, although 8 sounds higher to us, we’ll happily accept the 6mill figure thanks.

CELTIC: Awww thanks. We just thought we’d give you a price band to see what you’re comfy with.

NORWICH: No probs – looking for 12 actually but always happy to do a spesh for cash-poor sides like yerselves.

CELTIC: Haha smashing – tata the noo. And by the by if you’re looking for a middy, McCarthy’s on a free!

NORWICH: Haha – whit’re you like: McCarthy !!! See yaz.

  19. Good morning all from a 13 degrees and dry at the moment Garngad.

Go and bloody pay Norwich ffs Celtic or move on. Look out for the “Norwich we’re playing hard ball pish” and the deal falls through.

I will be surprised if we Get Idah.

After all if it was a case of sticking in a 2nd bid it could have been done sooner than this.

I would not trust our board as they are as crooked as a dogs leg.

But hey we only have around 100 million in bank.
