VAR sets out stall for season climax

Having already overruled erroneous officials on two occasions, yesterday’s Video Assistant Referee could bear no more and declined to confirm the ball struck Joe Newell’s arm before he scored for Hibernian.

Bad though that decision was, it was nothing on the second half incident when a penalty was not awarded to Celtic.  Josh Campbell, who was already on a yellow card, shoved Benjamin Nygren off the field with both hands inside the box.  It was a stonewall penalty and a similar incident to the foul given against Sebastian Tounekti which led to the Hibs equaliser.  Campbell should have received a second yellow, reducing Hibs to 9 men for the second week running.

The VAR team was not prepared to go there.  They could do nothing about Celtic’s onside goal.  Jamie McGrath’s studs to the shin of Alistair Johnston was equally undeniable.  A line was drawn, Celtic were getting no more.

This is how it is going to be between now and the end of the league campaign.  I predict Celtic will get a soft penalty in the Scottish Cup Final, “proof” that these things even themselves out.  In the league, anything that can be overlooked will be overlooked.  You know decisions against Celtic are laughable when even Kris Boyd confirms it.

Celtic dominated the encounter even before the 21st minute red card, but failed to test stand-in keeper Jordan Smith often enough.  The return to the starting line-up of Alistair Johnston brought the equaliser. The fullback timed his run and cross perfectly, leaving Daizen Maeda the simplest of tap-ins.

From then until late in the second half, Celtic fans were thinking, “When’s he going to bring on Kelechi?”  Our 29-year-old striker is by the length of the M8 between Edinburgh and Glasgow the most talented player in Scotland, who looks like he is playing against schoolboys.  Getting the best out of him over the next three games will determine the outcome of the league.

  1. I’m okay with the huns (blue version) losing.

Season over, and all on us to win our games.

  2. Looks like the league is going to the diets then, ach well, they are the lesser of the two evils I suppose, can’t see them dropping points till they meet us and there is no way we can make up the goal difference, sad to say.

A Sevco equaliser is probably in our best interests, but I just can’t bring myself to want one. Weird feeling.

  5. Beaton in a quandary. He needs to give them two penalties. Only one, and a draw, favours us.

  6. It is more dangerous if the huns win. Straight into CL, huge financial gain.

I can’t see our present board matching it.

  8. Kingsley off for Hearts

    Hearts bringing on two subs

    7 minutes added….mmm

  9. One big positive is that the Huns won’t be getting anywhere near CL money and won’t be able to spend big on a rebuild.

  11. I suggested years ago we should buy Shankland from Ayr as a back up striker and was shot down on here. I know why. However, the Huns should definitely have taken him.

Even though the score doesn’t suit us, it’s still delightful to see Sevco being beaten (or Beaton).

Just as well they picked up points after new year

… otherwise Motherwell might have caught them

  17. Totally deserved in the second half.

They still have to beat Mothers and Falkirk.

We still have beat huns and Mothers.

At least its down to two teams now.

    No financial gain for bluenoses.

  18. Raysingh,

Exactly if they were to get the 40m they would strenghten the team with another 20m with it

  19. Huns are out of it but I can’t help but see Hearts as title favourites now.

Our goal difference needs to improve before the last game.

  20. Happy with result because:

    1. the foe malign lost

    2. they can’t get CL dosh

    3. If Hearts win the league after that performance I think we need to say well done

    4. But they won’t, they will bottle it. Motherwell and Falkirk will give them tough games, and won’t lie down the way Sevco would if they had to play them again.

    5. We are better than Hearts and will beat them on the last day. And if we need goals we will get goals. The ghosts of ’86 will get into their heads.

  21. the long wait is over on

Perhaps it’s years of practice but I’ll never not be happy to see Rangers lose.

They’ll be desperate to beat us on Sunday.

Given what we’ve been through this season the fact that we are , almost certainly now, in a 2 way fight for the league is a miracle.

If things stay exactly as is ( ie we and Hearts win our next two games with no change to the goal difference ) then we’d need to beat Hearts on the final day by 3 goals.

Would be tough but by no means impossible.

  23. I think if you live in the west of Scotland and support Celtic then you will be buzzing that the huns are going to have a shitey summer again.

Sevco….3 trophies out of 33 while losing an eye watering £130m is just fantastic for me.

I think with the worry of Sevco winning the league gone- I think we’ll win our last 3 and be champions again.
