VAR sets out stall for season climax

351

Having already overruled erroneous officials on two occasions, yesterday’s Video Assistant Referee could bear no more and declined to confirm the ball struck Joe Newell’s arm before he scored for Hibernian.

Bad though that decision was, it was nothing on the second half incident when a penalty was not awarded to Celtic.  Josh Campbell, who was already on a yellow card, shoved Benjamin Nygren off the field with both hands inside the box.  It was a stonewall penalty and a similar incident to the foul given against Sebastian Tounekti which led to the Hibs equaliser.  Campbell should have received a second yellow, reducing Hibs to 9 men for the second week running.

The VAR team was not prepared to go there.  They could do nothing about Celtic’s onside goal.  Jamie McGrath’s studs to the shin of Alistair Johnston was equally undeniable.  A line was drawn, Celtic were getting no more.

This is how it is going to be between now and the end of the league campaign.  I predict Celtic will get a soft penalty in the Scottish Cup Final, “proof” that these things even themselves out.  In the league, anything that can be overlooked will be overlooked.  You know decisions against Celtic are laughable when even Kris Boyd confirms it.

Celtic dominated the encounter even before the 21st minute red card, but failed to test stand-in keeper Jordan Smith often enough.  The return to the starting line-up of Alistair Johnston brought the equaliser. The fullback timed his run and cross perfectly, leaving Daizen Maeda the simplest of tap-ins.

From then until late in the second half, Celtic fans were thinking, “When’s he going to bring on Kelechi?”  Our 29-year-old striker is by the length of the M8 between Edinburgh and Glasgow the most talented player in Scotland, who looks like he is playing against schoolboys.  Getting the best out of him over the next three games will determine the outcome of the league.

I hope those cheering for Hertz are happy.

Unless you think Falkirk will take points from them at home where they haven’t lost this season, it’s down to Motherwell lest they come to Celtic Park with a 3 point advantage and a couple of goals of a start.

That’s assuming we beat the huns next weekend who will come motivated to put a dent in our chances – if we can’t win it we’ll do our best to make sure you don’t either.

Sorry, that’s not a good result for Celtic tonight.

I can’t see us beating Hearts by 3 goals, myself.

Other Celtic teams, yes, but not this one.

We haven’t won a game by more than 2 goals for a long time, excepting the Scottish Cup and we haven’t even beaten Hearts this season, anyway.

Glad to be proved wrong, obviously.

My head had convinced itself that it wanted the Huns to to take something from the game but my heart made me automatically throw my arms in the air when they conceded the second goal .

We need to perform two more miracles and hope Motherwell can come up with a miracle of their own against Hearts .

I think our chances are probably too slim but if we are not to win the league I would rather it was hearts .

There were better results available, but I’m not unhappy to the huns out of it, and to have destiny in our own hands. Hearts are suspect and pressure is building – McInnes is not MON.

  16. To be fair to the Sevco players, they responded positively to Rohl’s call to treat every game like a cup final. They usually bottle cup finals.

  17. When it was a three way fight, some pressure was off Hearts. They now know that this is their once in century chance. They are up against a better team that has won 11 out of 12. They also have the scars of ’86. I think they will collapse. It’s up to our guys to step up.

  18. Evening all

I fancy Motherwell to take something off them, unfortunately I worry that Motherwell could take something off us also, they’ll be at home and they have given us real problems.

I think the Hun will come to us tooled up and looking to maim.

If Hearts win next week it’s hard to see them being overtaken. They could beat Falkirk by two or three and go just about out of reach unless we can rack up a couple of clear wins which you wouldn’t bet on.

  21. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

That result takes the pressure off. No £40m ECL money for the huns that they would actually spend rather than sit on and fritter away on pish punts.

We just need the blessed MO’N to win our final 3 games and hope Hertz cough up points at Fir Park or against Falkirk.

If Hertz do win the league we can safely blame the megalomaniac Irish financier for appointing the dud Frenchman on the recommendation of his spiv Svengali.

Still, could be worse. You could be a hun tonight. Marvellous fall out on their various sites.

  22. Well don’t know about the emotions after that. The 5 goal advantage COULD be the killer.Hoping now Motherwell can do the business.Even a draw, which is not impossible, and we beat them on Sunday.Still great to see them gubbed though.Seen Shanklands wife there with the kids.Mrs TB talking to her mother yesterday. She asked if her Dad was going. She said”No chance,he would not take the chance they won”.Be pyoor ragin now.How bad were they second half?

  28. It may be my age but, and especially after yesterday, I have the feeling we will not be allowed to win the league. I can envisage the deid team being given free rein by the officials to kick us off the park and get penalties and fouls whenever one of our players goes near them.

I was hoping for a draw this evening but now all officialdom need do is stop us and Hearts can win the league with ease.

Hope I’m wrong but our last 2 games against Hibs are just 2 examples of the cheating against us.

  29. glendalystonsils on

The league could well be lost for a variety of reasons but principally for the want of recruiting a decent striker post Kyogo . Possible CL income gone for the want of a few goals in goal difference .

Of all the self inflicted tragedies this season that is the worst one

  30. Is anyone still waiting on our Board demanding answers on Sundays daylight robbery. What about Burnley,The Blogger,Tontine,Celtic Mac,etc? Are you waiting on Nicholson to come out all guns blazing?.£40 million at stake. You would think he would say something.

    Oh,wait a minute !!!!!!!!!

  31. If we lose this league on goal difference, it’s largely on ourselves I’m afraid. For a manager that has lost a league on goal difference, MoN has shown a surprising attitude to it. One which looks to have filtered through to the players who for weeks now seem content to see a game out by one goal. Hearts are favourites now for me.

Not sure about that. If I,m reading Bert Kassies correctly second place in the league gets you into the CL qualifiers so at the moment there is still the potential for them to get the £40m pot

Howver beating them on Sunday which I believe we will means they will go into the europa qualifiers.
