VAR SPOILS GIAKOUMAKIS RETURN

GIORGOS GIAKOUMAKIS was prevented by VAR from a scoring return to the Greece international team during their 1-0 win over Romania in Bucharest last night.

The Celtic striker thought he had claimed his second strike in his seventh appearance for his country in the 22nd minute of the friendly encounter.

Following his hat-trick against Ross County at the weekend to hoist his Hoops tally to 12, Giakoumakis turned the ball behind the keeper, but his delight and that of the visitors was halted by VAR who ruled it out for offside.

GREEK GOLDEN BHOY…Giorgos Giakoumakis celebrates one of his 12 goals for Celtic.

The Parkhead hitman, bought for £2.5million from Dutch outfit VVV-Venlo in late August, put in a good shift during Gus Poyet’s debut as the country’s new head coach.

The only goal of the confrontation arrived six minutes from the turnaround when Andreas Bouchalakis powerfully headed in a cross from Lazaros Rota.

Giakoumakis was replaced 15 minutes from the end with Vangelis Pavlidis taking his place, but the Celtic hitman will be fit to lead the team again in their challenge game in Montenegro on Monday night.

Ange Postecoglou will be hoping his in-form frontman will avoid any injuries as he prepares for the Premiership match at Ibrox a week tomorrow with the Hoops three points ahead with seven games to go.
