VAR, the second goal, Jota goal and Starfelt challenge. It’s complicated

246

Let’s start with what the other side think.  Motherwell manager, Steven Hammell, complained about Celtic’s second goal.  Matt Penney took a throw-in and hit Sead Haksabanovic, who was returning to the field having run off with Penney.  Hammell wrongly claimed VAR did not look at the incident, when in fact, they scrutinised it before the goal was confirmed.

See below.  The ball is in play the instant any part of it goes above the line.  What you have to consider is, where is the ball when it hits Haksabanovic on the head?

Penney is well behind the line, Haksabanovic’s foot looks to be on the line, a football is 22cm.  The image is inconclusive.  Motherwell may have a case for a good moan, but even though we don’t know for sure what happened on this occasion, VAR was correct, it is only there to change clear mistakes, which this was not.

The challenge on Carl Starfelt by Josh Morris was studs up, caught the Celtic player on the foot (by definition, therefore, out of control) and dangerous.  Carl saw it coming and escaped more serious consequences.

There were mitigating circumstances.  Carl hesitated, inviting Morris into the challenge, so there was no intent.  I suspect that mitigation and the fact that Carl escaped injury led referee Willie Collum to caution the player.  We then revert to VAR’s role as an arbiter of a clear mistake.  On this occasion, they decided that threshold was not breached.  The referee should have awarded a red card first, or waited on guidance from VAR, before issuing a caution.

VAR takes the heat on this one, but it was a ref decision.  You may also like to consider an incident at Ibrox last month, when VAR upgraded a caution issued to a Livingston player, advising the referee a red was in order.  Personally, I’m happy for VAR to adjudicate either way on these decisions but would really prefer the same interpretation applied to teams in green and white, as to teams in blue.

For my money, the Jota goal was onside.  From what we saw on TV, VAR was provided inconclusive evidence.  Is it possible they do not have a camera at both ends of the ground?  Otherwise, why show us inconclusive pictures from 60 yards away?

My understanding is that VAR have access to their own cameras and to TV (the game was on PPV) at both sides of the ground.  I’m a tad suspicious we didn’t see the better freeze-frame.  The assistant flagged an offside and we have no clear evidence either way, so I have no case to argue.

I’m happy we have VAR, it provides scrutiny, which is welcome.  This has already made clear that we need better ‘trained’ referees.  Vilifying them at every turn (I get the irony here) will not help.  We also need better VAR.  Scotland has an entry level product.  England has better, the Champions League has best.  Football must find the money and press on.

My main concern for the technology is how ball-to-arm incidents are judged when we visit Ibrox on 2 January.  The portents on this one are not encouraging.

Matt O’Riley continues to grow as a player.  His ball-winning tackle inside the box before crossing for Kyogo to open the scoring was a measured treat.

RESULTS FROM GAME #22 – MOTHERWELL 1 CELTIC 2 (KYOGO, MAEDA)

    Good evening, friends.

So, yet another game full of interference by VAR but where we won despite their best efforts. Should Jota’s goal have stood? Should Motherwell have been reduced to 10 for that foul on Starfelt? What exactly happened to give Motherwell the free kick that then led to their goal? These, and other questions, will never be properly answered. An absolute farce so far and everything that I feared it would be. Not at our scintillating best last night but still managed another away win to maintain our 7-point lead at the top.

Domestically we have now played 16, winning 15 and losing 1, away to St Mirren (who do THEY play on Saturday lunchtime?). We have scored 56 and conceded 12.

As for the voting, really big thanks this week to the 66 who emailed me with their 3 personal superstars. The turnout was particularly impressive given the lack of obvious live coverage of the game. The total votes cast for each player with my own choices asterisked are as follows –

    Hart: 0

    Juranovic*: 7

    Carter-Vickers*: 54

    Starfelt: 18

    Taylor: 0

    O’Riley: 48

    Hatate: 1

    Mooy*: 17

    Abada: 0

    Kyogo: 38

    Jota: 8

    Haksabanovic: 1

    Giakoumakis: 0

    Turnbull: 2

    Maeda: 4

    Abildgaard: 0

And so the players receiving POINTS for the game against Motherwell are –

    Carter-Vickers – 5 pts

    O’Riley – 4 pts

    Kyogo – 3 pts

    Starfelt – 2 pts

    Mooy – 1 pt

After 22 games the overall standings are as follows –

    47 points – Hatate

34 points – Jota and Taylor

    31 points – Carter-Vickers

    24 points – O’Riley

    22 points – Jenz

    19 points – McGregor

    16 points – Kyogo

    15 points – Mooy

    14 points – Abada

    13 points – Giakoumakis

12 points – Juranovic and Haksabanovic

    9 points – Welsh

    8 points – Bernabei

6 points – Ralston and Starfelt

    5 points – Forrest

    4 points – Hart

    3 points – Maeda

    2 points – Turnbull

0 points – Abildgaard, McCarthy and Siegrist

Our next game – and our last domestic game for a month – is only 2 sleeps away. A 3pm Saturday home game against Ross County. By the time we kick off we will know whether a win will put us 7 points clear, 9 points clear or 10 points clear. Not a bad position to be in.

In case anyone is wondering I’ve decided that I too will take a month’s break and so the forthcoming Sydney Cup games will NOT be included in the Player Of The Year competition. So everyone can watch those games in a more relaxed manner without having to assess who our best 3 are. I hope that meets with general approval.

HE was raging when Ritchies free kick was disallowed ( For obvious reasons), and I must admit that I joined in with many other Celtic supporters, who grudgingly APPAULED Mortons GOAL, which was a free kick in front of The Jungle, taken by Andy Ritchie, ONLY for the Ref to rule that some Morton player was offside…some 20 yards out from Goal.

I dont remember ANY Celtic player, including Peter Latchford claiming for an OFFSIDE ?

It was a brilliant Goal by Ritchie, and of course with him being an Ex Celt, there was some sympathy from the Celtic crowd.

Celtic WON the game, but i cant remember the score.

it was a shocking decision, and MAYBE it was the Linesman who was too blame ?

O’Neill claims Dick Advocaat demanded he and his family leave the Crutherland Hotel in East Kilbride after he accidentally booked a stay in Rangers’ usual base.

Celtic legend Martin O’Neill has revealed his family were ordered out of their hotel before an Old Firm derby in 2000 – because they’d accidentally booked a stay in Rangers’ usual base.

O’Neill’s first season as Celtic manager will forever be fondly remembered in Parkhead folklore as they romped to a domestic treble ahead of their city rivals. The tone was set for the season with a romping 6-2 win, dubbed the ‘Demolition Derby,’ with Chris Sutton bagging a hat-trick and Henrik Larsson scoring his famous chip over Stefan Klos.

Writing in his new book On Days Like These , the legendary manager tells the story of how his wife and daughter had booked a stay in the Crutherland Hotel in East Kilbride – only to find out the Rangers team were also staying there. Not only that, they had a contract with the hotel – which Gers threatened to cancel if they weren’t evicted.

I woke up after the game, and checked the score, and I saw that Man Utd had scored again to make it 4 – 2, when McTominay scored in the 91st minute.

I have one golden rule, for what it’s worth. I always decide on the correct score BEFORE going into the betting app and seeing the odds on show. The secret is to stick to your original selection and never allow yourself to be tempted by better odds on another score.

  24. So it now transpires that the var camera operator fell asleep and omitted to record Jota’s wonder goal at Fir Park.

What an absolute farce and a total embarrassment for the game in Scotland. Due to the missing video evidence, var would obviously be in no position to overrule the decision of the referee and his assistant who raised the flag.

I know the OLD ADAGE….NEVER CHANGE your Bet.

It was my auld Orange Father in Law that told me that in the late 1970’s.

I often take a 3- 2 Correct Score line in games that do NOT involve Celtic…just for the HIGHER ODDS and a bit of fun, and as added interest if that game is on TV etc ?

In 2002, Arsenal were playing Juventus in a Champions League game at Highbury. For some reason it was NOT Televised LIVE. I was drinking all day in BRRB’s neck of the woods that day and night in Glesga South Side.

I ended up in the Queens Park Cafe around 9pm, and the TV HIGHLIGHTS were due to start just after 10pm.

I managed to avoid any updates and the Final Score while in the Pub.

As i watched the HIGHLIGHTS just after 10pm, I was getting a wee bit excited……

I had taken Arsenal to WIN by the Correct Score of 3 – 1, AND Freddie Lundberg to Score the 1st Goal….

Watching the highlights while half drunk, Freddie scored the 1st Goal, and then Arsenal were winning 2 – 1….but I didnt know ” How Long” there was to go, as there was NO CLOCK on the TV Screen as it was only Highlights…

Freddie then Scored a THIRD Goal for Arsenal, to make it 3 – 1, and the Final Whistle went soon after, much to my relief.

The ODDS for my Bet were 150/1, so I was a happy Bhoy that night…and the next day.

  26. I have been against VAR from its first introduction at the last World Cup and remain so.

However, maybe our ‘misfortunes’ with VAR are a blessing in disguise. We have lost no points because of it, so far, and it has been demonstrated to everyone else that VAR does not favour us. Let’s, for a moment, assume that VAR is not being operated by manipulating incompetents and let’s add that everywhere VAR is imperfect because of the fact that the technology is not up to the demands of football – even with rule changes to accommodate VAR- and there remains a subjective element around what incidents even to look at, to say nothing of hand ball. If this is the case, others -e.g., Sevco- will start to have decisions against them, or not for them, because the subjectivity and the inadequacy of the technology will apply randomly to everyone eventually and unexpectedly. When that happens, as Celtic have taken it on the chin and said little or nothing, they -the others- theoretically, should have nothing to say or at least be ignored. If, in time, it doesn’t happen to others randomly, as it is happening to us just now, then we have incontrovertible, objective, evidence of cheating by officials, as there can be no other explanation

  27. I WILL take Celtic to win by 3 – 2, IF I believe that it may be a close game against the Huns for example, and/or a European Game ?

When playing the Huns I usually factor in the likelihood of The Huns getting at least ONE PENALTY !
