VAR will impact Celtic more than any club in world football

247

If there is any club in world football that will benefit from the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, it is Celtic – in my opinion.  Other opinions are possible.  Refereeing is wide open to interpretation by fallible officials and is seldom consistent.

In my football supporting life, countless shoves in the box have been viewed as a penalty, or not.  The 2005 penalty at Tynecastle, when Rangers needed a late goal, springs to mind as quickly as the offside goal Newco ‘scored’ at Hampden on Sunday.  Then there’s the 1993 Douglas Hope decision, to allow Rangers to take kick off while 8 Celtic players were celebrating a goal in front of the Jungle.  Technically not a VAR issue, but a demonstration of what can happen without appropriate supervision.

VAR does not remove mistakes, honest or otherwise, however, it will make them significantly less likely.  When it is introduced to the Scottish Premiership in December, it will change the way we celebrate goals.  At the moment, I often glance at the linesman as a goal celebration starts, to check his flag is pointing in the right direction.  Only then can there be certainty.  From December, we will need to wait, often for several minutes, to find out if a goal has actually been scored.

The biggest impact of VAR will be as a deterrent.  Defenders will learn to stop grabbing shirts inside the box, off the ball incidents should quickly dry up, talent should be allowed to flourish.  Teams that learn this quickly will be first to benefit.

Yesterday’s decision feels momentous for the future of the game in Scotland.

  1. I agree with some earlier comments. Although I welcome VAR it will be used vehemently against us

  2. When the intent of the VAR user is and always has been to detract from Celtic then this can only go one way. Be prepared for a Tsunami of close calls which go against us and the sleekit burial of ones that go against them!

  3. Weebobbycollins on

… I’d love a Celtic official (doesn’t have to always be Ange) to trot this out verbatim at EVERY post match interview ….

“A situation where there are 42 senior clubs but 80% of all Grade One officials support just ONE of those 42 clubs doesn’t feel healthy …

We would be ridiculed for that. How do you know it’s 80%? How can it be proved if a referee supports a particular team? If asked they will roll out the inevitable local team, Motherwell, Killie, Falkirk etc. It can only be changed if the set up is changed i.e. an honest, impartial head of referees. Can’t see it happening soon.

And I don’t see VAR as a solution with the usual subjects doing the monitoring…

  4. The proof of the pudding will be in the cheating, but I am far from convinced that Celtic will benefit for VAR, to the extent that P67 believes.

A cut & paste from “How is VAR applied in football ?”

“VAR will be used for clear and obvious errors or serious missed incidents in four match-changing situations : goals; penalty decisions; direct red-card incidents; and mistaken identity.”

So, a player can continue to foul with impunity but VAR is not interested. A player, on a team needing a goal, can take a quick free kick but the refs blows up and stops the game. Again, VAR is not interested. And so on, etc, etc.

Our refs will manage Celtic matches in whatever manor they wish to, with or without VAR.

  5. The video assistant referee (VAR) is a match official in association football who reviews decisions made by the referee.

Following extensive trialling in a number of major competitions, VAR was first written into the Laws of the Game by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in 2018.[1] Operating under the philosophy of “minimal interference, maximum benefit”,[2][3] the VAR system seeks to provide a way for “clear and obvious errors” and “serious missed incidents” to be corrected.[4]

    Procedure

There are four categories of decisions that can be reviewed:[4]

Goal/no goal – attacking team commits an offence, ball out of play, ball entering goal, offside, handball, offences and encroachment during penalty kicks.

Penalty/no penalty – attacking team commits an offence, ball out of play, location of offence, incorrect awarding, offence not penalised.

Direct red card – denial of obvious goal-scoring opportunity, serious foul play, violent conduct/biting/spitting, using offensive/insulting/abusive language or gestures. All straight red cards are subject to review.

Mistaken identity in awarding a red or yellow card.

    ————————–

Sunday – which decisions did the referee make that were obvious errors ?

He gets away with booking players for tackels we thought were red card offenses.

The winning goal was marginally offside, maybe.

Location of the free kick for the hand ball at edge of box, on the line or not ?

Lungstrum i think using offensive languae and threatening behaviout to hatate ?

  7. VARS first decision is to overturn the shy that Roy Aitken stole in the 1989 cup final.

  8. RE VAR…I sincerely hope that you are correct Paul and that Celtic FC could MAYBE Benefit from VAR…However, as has been pointed out on here, there could still be so called Refs who are always going to allow thuggery on a a consistent basis with Celtic players being the ” Victims” .

Also in the 117th minute of the match on Sunday, Ref MADHUN CLEARLY awarded CELTIC Free Kick for foul play near the half way line. The free Kick was taken quickly, and it left Jota being in possession on the left wing, with the opportunity of a promising Celtic attack ?

MADHUN stopped the play, and I for one believed that HE ( MADHUN) was about to order that the Free Kick was taken too quickly…and/or that the Ball was rolling as Celtic took the free Kick…which would of course mean that Celtic STILL have possession and therefore take the Free Kick again ( With every Celtic player believing the same) ?

However, MADHUN then OVERTURNED HIS decision and gave the Huns the Free Kick, from the same spot where Celtic took the 1st Free Kick ?

I have yet to hear and/or read ANY so called Expert Pundit and/or so called Journos QUESTIONING this ludicrous decision making, ?

ASIDE from the SERIAL THUGGERY that was allowed to occur, I wish Celtic FC would come out and ASK some questions about the Refs performance…I wont be holding my breath.

Will the VAR be administered by foreign refs?

If not, it will be retired Masonic cheats checking up on current Masonic cheats.

More decisions will go in favour of the hun and against us.

Getting rid of plastic pitches would have been more to our benefit than VAR imo.

  10. RUMOUR…

Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak and NOT so Pritti Patel to form the Scottish VAR Panel, in order that we have ” Honestly and Integrity” of the highest order in place from the word GO !

  11. ERNIE LYNCH on 20TH APRIL 2022 12:35 PM

VAR doesn’t cover deliberate, disruptive, persistent, targeted, tactically motivated fouling, of the sort the likes of TR is subjected to.

As St Stivs post 1.11 rolls out the rules,do you think we could incorporate challenges, such as on Tom? As an extension of the rules.

It just appears we are implementing rules set in 2018 but we are not including the knowledge and experience learned from other countries since implementation.

    Paul67

I think the hun player was in line,John Hartsons cup final goal would be a better example, surely deemed a goal.

It may imo limit the Masonic behaviour, the digital line is quite clear,so a chance to expose it may arise.

Funnily enough, I think that goal would have stood as the error was not during the goal play. i think Walker clarified this when we got the incorrect corner at Livi.

  14. Put me in the ‘VAR will change nothing’ camp. We’ve seen TV pundits and ex players watch re-runs over and over and still mostly come down on the side where their allegiances lie. It’s got to be monitored outside of Scotland and the clubs should be pushing now for this to be part of the deal.

  15. ” HONESTY and INTEGRITY”….Anybody know where we can find such virtues within the Scottish game ?

Also I heard that HUN Kevin Thomson ” Describing”…the assault by Hun thug Roofe on MAEDA…who had raced away from said Hun……as being NOT MALICIOUS, when it was a CLEAR 2ND Yellow Card Offence.

Roofe had only ONE INTENT……to Foul and hopefully injure Maeda…..

  16. Guys,

  19. VAR was going to come at some stage, our History with Masonic Refereeing has of course made us cynical and with good reason,

Personally I’m adopting a wait & see attitude.

No point in getting excited either way, only one thing on my mind, win our game against Ross County, nothing else matters right now.

  20. VAR will change the game in Scotland, like it has done in every other country where it has been introduced. Let’s wait and see what the outcome is and then judge.

What VAR will not change is the sectarianism and anti-Irish racism that has existed and been accepted in Scotland for the last 100 years plus.

Celtic were bullied in midfield on Sunday. If Ange is as astute as we believe he is, he will fix it in time for the next meeting. We know the team can be lightweight, the Alloa game proved that months ago. We need a replacement for Scott Brown.

A League Cup, the League title and Scottish Cup Semi-Finalists, would be a dream first season for Ange and a million miles better than we could have ever envisaged around the end August last year.

Finally, to believe we can shut out Ibrox from winning their share of honours as we did in the nine years from 2012 is not clear thinking. They will win their share just like they did for many years before, let’s make sure ours is the Lion’s share.

  21. SAINT STIVS on 20TH APRIL 2022 2:14 PM

Also Kevin Thomson completely CONTRADICTED him self with with he said…

IF it was simply a so called ” Professional Foul”….in order to COMMIT ” A Professional Foul” as Thomson stated……then logic dictates that is is WITH ” INTENT” !

Has there EVER been an….” ACCIDENTAL Professional Foul” ?

” Biased Chump Hun Thomson as ever.

Supervised by RH Davidson (Airdrie), JRP Gordon (Newport on Tay) and T. Wharton (Clarkston).

  26. when was their “share” ever won “fair” ?

the new version ignores every FFP metric. stole the “old firms” regalia, insigni and effectively is trading under a false banner, we are the same , but not for liabilities of the old club.

the old version – under murray

EBTS, off the book payments, improperly registered players (3-0 reversal in all other competitions), paying players foreign tax liabilities, falsely inflated stadium values, tax cases, unpaid debtors, ………. 27 years of cheating.

the old version – pre murray

masonic craft and orange lodge cabal, sfa integration, a sectarian employment practice (not just players, everyone down to the cleaning staff),

Maybe not quite as proscriptive as you can’t talk about this, here are a few topics of conversation to be getting on with, maybe an interesting and informative insight piece on something topical to stimulate debate. That sort of thing

    Yeah, heard the same rumour.

The stupid sod got his McGregor’s mixed up. How he managed that who knows, cause one wears a mask and the other is pot ugly.

Moral of the story: the next time certain allegations are made, check out the Alligator.

Truly the sod was named McGill. He’ll of a nice guy, but fishy
