VAR will impact Celtic more than any club in world football

247

If there is any club in world football that will benefit from the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, it is Celtic – in my opinion.  Other opinions are possible.  Refereeing is wide open to interpretation by fallible officials and is seldom consistent.

In my football supporting life, countless shoves in the box have been viewed as a penalty, or not.  The 2005 penalty at Tynecastle, when Rangers needed a late goal, springs to mind as quickly as the offside goal Newco ‘scored’ at Hampden on Sunday.  Then there’s the 1993 Douglas Hope decision, to allow Rangers to take kick off while 8 Celtic players were celebrating a goal in front of the Jungle.  Technically not a VAR issue, but a demonstration of what can happen without appropriate supervision.

VAR does not remove mistakes, honest or otherwise, however, it will make them significantly less likely.  When it is introduced to the Scottish Premiership in December, it will change the way we celebrate goals.  At the moment, I often glance at the linesman as a goal celebration starts, to check his flag is pointing in the right direction.  Only then can there be certainty.  From December, we will need to wait, often for several minutes, to find out if a goal has actually been scored.

The biggest impact of VAR will be as a deterrent.  Defenders will learn to stop grabbing shirts inside the box, off the ball incidents should quickly dry up, talent should be allowed to flourish.  Teams that learn this quickly will be first to benefit.

Yesterday’s decision feels momentous for the future of the game in Scotland.

If you’ve ever had your Blanet deleted you would know all about it😳

    It does sound painful 😂

I welcome VAR. I only wished we’d had it years ago.

Will it work – will it be allowed to work – perfectly?

    No , of course not.

On balance though it will , I believe , be better than we have.

Paul is right – it will act as a deterrent on defenders but, more importantly, on referees.

No longer will they be able to hide behind the argument that they only get to see it once in a split second.

For me , when that genuinely happens, I have no complaint.

The worst decisions that go against us , and for them , are ones where there is no dubiety at all and the decision is a scandalous game – sometimes season – changing one.

    Take for example just three.

Cadetes equaliser in 1997 at Ibrox – an utterly scandalous decision.

The missed handball against Ict in 2015. Even worse, if that’s believable.

Willie collum giving a penalty that never was and he couldn’t physically even see – the worst of the three.

    There are countless others.

Not even the most egregious ignoring of the rules would allow any VAR not to reverse this decisions , with the tv analysis available today.

  3. Coneybhoy- based on media here you can see thro the bad speln and you know it’ll be our fault

  4. Interesting discussion on VAR.

Agree that it will not solve everything.

However, I’d take resolution of the majority of blatant decisions.

Few years back, sevco correctly received a multitude of retrospective red cards. Celtic and Aberdeen being the main victims.

If VAR had existed back then?

  5. prestonpans bhoys on

One club didn’t vote for var and they were outwith the top league. No idea who though.

  6. Freemasons will be dancing in the streets of Scotland……

    Or is that they Orangemen?

  7. I predict a mystery power cut or camera failure of the VAR system at Ibrox, if they have voted against this then like the Cinch deal they wont implement it.

  8. As luck would have it we were again without a match-fit striker for an important game…and as we know, problems at full-back and in midfield developed. Would any of us have objected if Ajeti, Bolingoli & McCarthy had been pitched-in? I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but maybe the above three playing in their recognised positions could have given something. It’s well known that the first two have been way out of the picture with Ange, but sometimes needs must.

Bolingoli was never a KT, Ajeti not a Hartson, and McCarthy no Scott Brown, but to see seasoned professionals from the EPL & Europe unable to ‘get a look in’ in Scotland puzzles me, are they really that bad?….of course maybe they are! If so, c£12m+, fees & wages, ‘up in smoke’.

Salient points well made! Perfection doesn’t exist – a better way forward does.

  10. The fundamental concept of VAR is to help referees with their decision making.

Can anyone on here seriously argue against that. ?

    HH.

  11. We have gone from eccentric oddballs for referees ( 1930´s – 60´s ), to professionals who refereed on the side

( 60´s – 90´s ) and since then we have had the emergence of younger professional referees with Instagram accounts and children who will be referees too. If VAR can put a lid on their ascension then bring it on.

  12. JHB

Bolingoli is on loan and we have heard nothing on Ajeti since he was injured before Christmas.

The only one of the 3 who warms the bench is McCarthy. The story with him is the murkiest – never gets a start but always on the bench.

Bitton wasn’t in the squad so the other option was Ideguchi who has only recently recovered

A lot of bad bounces for us but I am hoping for a massive reaction on May Day.

You don’t need a midfield clugger if you pass and move properly – as we have done a lot this season, for perspective

  13. have we let thems know yet they are not welcome and that they are getting no allocation on health and safety matters for the next Glasgow derby.

  14. dont know if this will work, but 10 minutes of huns admitting they will die, heheh,

  15. Referees:- has anyone else noticed how many of them are gym bunnies now? Linesman at Anfield last night was massive (nice hair too). A few Scottish ones look bulked up too.

  16. You don’t need a midfield clugger if you pass and move properly – as we have done a lot this season, for perspective

    exactly.

  17. Will VAR be shown on the telly – like they do on SKY with offside lines and freezeframes?

… I’d love a Celtic official (doesn’t have to always be Ange) to trot this out verbatim at EVERY post match interview …

“A situation where there are 42 senior clubs but 80% of all Grade One officials support just ONE of those 42 clubs doesn’t feel healthy …”

    ————

We would be ridiculed for that. How do you know it’s 80%? How can it be proved if a referee supports a particular team?

    ———–

WBC – Thank you for response. In reply

    “We would be ridiculed”

    by who?

Those making a living from the status quo? Who cares?

“How do you know it is 80%”

    I don’t.

And, if you check the wording, it doesn’t actually say this is the case.

    Haven’t a clue on percentages but it’s a lot.

    Again – who cares?

    “How can it be proved?”

    Who wants to prove anything?

    Who cares about proof?

Objective is to put the core message out there, exact details irrelevant.

The football world will either be compelled to consciously avoid it en masse or, eventually, dam bursts and someone actually talks about it.

If that talk is disparaging towards Celtic?

    … You’ve got it ! Who cares.

    😊🤔

PS – the last sentence in the suggested statement is deliberately the most definitive.

    “Celtic call out refereeing performance”

    Eh, they wouldn’t be.

Celtic pointedly make no comment about performance instead speculating generally on something that does not FEEL healthy.

  19. I said at the time Bolingoli got a rough deal compared to other breaches of Covid.

Did he even get a fine ?

This was a political ostracisation that Celtic went along with. He was made an example off.

I presume we are still paying him.

Our own first minister has had numerous breaches of the rules and the f@@ king Prime minister has had fines and numerous parties but is still in position.

Sorry moderator 1888, but this partly political post is totally relevant and needs aired.

    HH to all.

  20. CONEYBHOY,

You don’t need a midfield clugger if you pass and move properly…

    ____

You shouldn’t need one if you have fair refereeing.

We’ll prove it a week on Sunday.

    ——-

    A voice of reason.

VAR will enhance the adage – not just justice done, but justice seen to be done…..to a certain extent. Will it solve everything? Of course not. Should we embrace it – yes I think so.

One thing’s for sure, if the Ref & assistants are the “baddies’ on the field now, we will have a whole new batch of “baddies” off-field and in front of screens to berate in future……possibly the famous McCoist phrase of “who are these people” will become de rigueur.

I have many relatives in Liverpool. My cousin’s daughter lost her partner at Hillsborough. His grave today is still festooned with red and white scarves and flags. His brother was with him and survived but passed away about 10 or 12 years ago. He was a broken man.

    Hobson’s choice right enough.

Looking at Bada’s post about this weekend’s refs and based upon previous patterns of appointments, this would suggest neither Clancy nor Walsh will get the hun game gig.

Collum and Madden did the two recent games, so Beaton wouldn’t be a surprise.

If we do the business on Sunday, we will be in a good place as only a win at Celtic Park will be enough for the hun. However I am sure the ref appointed will be one upon whom they can rely to give us hee haw.
