VAR will impact Celtic more than any club in world football

247

If there is any club in world football that will benefit from the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, it is Celtic – in my opinion.  Other opinions are possible.  Refereeing is wide open to interpretation by fallible officials and is seldom consistent.

In my football supporting life, countless shoves in the box have been viewed as a penalty, or not.  The 2005 penalty at Tynecastle, when Rangers needed a late goal, springs to mind as quickly as the offside goal Newco ‘scored’ at Hampden on Sunday.  Then there’s the 1993 Douglas Hope decision, to allow Rangers to take kick off while 8 Celtic players were celebrating a goal in front of the Jungle.  Technically not a VAR issue, but a demonstration of what can happen without appropriate supervision.

VAR does not remove mistakes, honest or otherwise, however, it will make them significantly less likely.  When it is introduced to the Scottish Premiership in December, it will change the way we celebrate goals.  At the moment, I often glance at the linesman as a goal celebration starts, to check his flag is pointing in the right direction.  Only then can there be certainty.  From December, we will need to wait, often for several minutes, to find out if a goal has actually been scored.

The biggest impact of VAR will be as a deterrent.  Defenders will learn to stop grabbing shirts inside the box, off the ball incidents should quickly dry up, talent should be allowed to flourish.  Teams that learn this quickly will be first to benefit.

Yesterday’s decision feels momentous for the future of the game in Scotland.

    Apologies.

  5. There was an item on VAR on ‘The Nine’ on BBC Scotland last night, at or around 9.30pm, on iplayer for those that are interested. Normally a decent news programme, it switched to Hampden to show VAR being illustrated on a training simulator, led no less by John ‘Bellshill’ Beaton, and an interview with Nick Welsh. Now you would like to think that the Review of decisions would be independent of the referees on the pitch, but it won’t be will it, it will be carried out by the same officials or their retired equivalent. In short another money spinner for the masonic cabal.

Watching that took me back to the first goal.in the 3-0 derby at CP

And all the talking and time it took for madden to eventually give the Hatate goal .

We of course do not use VAR but I cant help but wonder if he was asking the 4th official if there was a foul on the tv replay

Him and the linesman got together and he was clearly seen talking to someone on his mic

Yes, it was a strange one. On VAR, I’m in the camp of in favour, only because, I agree it gives ex refs to give or not give dodgy decisions.

I believe initially that will be the case, remember it will be introduced at the tail end of next season, so more ‘honest mistakes’ both on field and in the VAR studio may or most likely come into play, IMHO assisting their favoured team.

My reasoning for being in favour is that, initially they (their favoured team) may benefit. however their dodgy decisions will be brought to a global attention.

    Hope you are well

If the fix is in for the huns we will surely get evidence of it this weekend. Hopefully not, but we shall see.

I wish it were purely incompetence on the part of the refs but my paranoia has been increasing of late.

  10. Ref the ref

I’m surprised his handling of the end of each half was ignored

This is not open to debate but factual and visible.

Twice as they attacked he played past the allotted time eg 3 mins. At the end of another half celtic were on the attack, he blew 3 seconds early.

Also as seen and heard on commentary, they had never seen a referee give an uncontested drop ball, to them, on the edge of our box. It’s actually against the spirit if not key rules of the game to do this.

After Hillsborough: very hard reading indeed.

I would also urge football fans to Watch the documentary ” Anne”. Unforgettable.

Safe limited standing areas, maybe. But we should never go back to standing stadia.

    HH

    ••••••

Standing stadiums all over Britain and a tragic disaster happened at Hillsborough 1989.

Utterly tragic may the 97 lost souls rest in peace. 🙏 💔 🍀

    But, but, but, but.

The Hillsborough disaster doesn’t then mean that all of the other stadiums were there was NO disaster are all of a sudden, safety hazards, far from it.

Ask Liverpool fans delegation who visited Parkhead to view our safe standing area, all visitors agreed that ‘all seating’ football stadiums after Hillsborough were a cynical overreaction from Thatcher’s govt which she cynically exploited to crush football hooliganism, which Thatcher couldn’t control, especially English international supporters, and Thatcher knew that football terraces were areas that rejuvenated the working classes by lifting their spirits and forging new connections, which Thatcher abhorred, “There is no such thing as society” she said, so screwing with the “out ball” ie huge chunks of society going to football games and benefitting from a sense of belonging, Thatcher decided that football’s togetherness had to be smashed, by Toryfying football, turning supporters into customers etc, and now football is a business, money is the root of all evil etc, and billionaires own clubs and supporters are just dairy cows being milked by billionaires on renewal day, year in, year out.

So, Liverpool fans, 97 of their family died at Hillsborough, yet Liverpool fans want seats removed as they feel they’ve been played by the establishment, govt, media, the law, etc, etc.

I agree with Liverpool’s fans football stadiums have been turned into libraries for 90%+ of games, that’s created apathy within supporters and it has spread through society, creating a sheepish population, which was Thatcher’s desire at the very outset for years before Hillsborough, she knew that if you cut the balls off of football supporters, the govts would get away with whatever they wanted, making people think, like you did, GREENPINATA, that standing areas at football grounds cause disasters, it had absolutely nothing to do with how -THAT – game at Hillsborough was policed on the day.

Liverpool fans know best, listen to them. HH

Maybe I missed it but I was looking in to see if AN TEARMANN

had answered CANAMALAR’S request for evidence that would prove AN TEARMANN’S repetitive posting that, Mr GEORGE GALLOWAY is a racist, and other things that CANAMALAR had also mentioned.

    Thanks.

  16. I was worried – clearly not surprised – by Reo’s revelations by Dan Orlowitz that he was running on empty [we can all see it!] …

“In Japan there were ways I could refresh myself and take a mental break but that’s difficult when you’re playing so frequently.

“There are times when can’t make a run on goal, or hold back on the attack to preserve the team’s balance, and I have to recognize my fatigue.”

To me, very weird that neither Ange, JK, McElhone or wee Gavin have recognised how this will impact onfield cohesion and performance. If Reo’s exhausted yet bustin his hump in training to prove he’s worth a first team shirt clearly his performances will be affected. Sports science will have all the data and metrics to prove this.

On VAR, if we think the SFA/League powers dont yet know who their VAR controllers will be and are accepting resumes from the best candidates for the job we’re delusional; a tool is only as useful as the workman wielding it.

    ••••••

I’ll take that as a NO you don’t have evidence to prove your 2 year long claims everyday without fail that Mr GEORGE GALLOWAY is a racist, as you have called him?

As for the £49 question, take that up with your fellow Tims who paid that price for OLDFIRM tickets amid the BRENDAN RODGERS circus show in 2016, then they sang “YOUR NOT RANGERS ANYMORE” really?

So why were tickets priced at £49 if they weren’t Rangers anymore?

Eight years now and Celtic season ticket holders have been paying for tickets, £49, £52, £53, each purchase sugests that the OLDFIRM is a thing and Rangers are still alive, according to Celtic season ticket holders.

Maybe its your fellow Tims season ticket holders whom you should be calling racist huns?

It’s Celtic season ticket holders who are racists by propping up a PLC board who fully agree with and sign off on their agreement of these OLDFIRM ticket trap prices, and if you prop up the OLDFIRM then you prop up anti-Irish racism, so don’t blame me gov.

The sleekit PLC used BR as the decoy to make Tims think that the PLC was on their side after recruiting BR, who was merely recruited to ensure that no Tims or MSM would ask what view the PLC would have about Rangers, were they the same club?

How many trophies would be stripped?

How much had Rangers paid back to HMRC of the £150 million EBT TAX DODGING SWINDLE?

How was AULDHEID, CANAMALAR, MORRISSEY, BRT&H getting on with Res12, etc?

Did any of the all singing, all dancing, 53k season ticket holders give a toss anymore about boring, sideshow stuff like, Res12, ETHICS, INTEGRITY, PRINCIPLES, or did the crafty PLC show everybody what your real colours were when they forced you all to drop everything and go gaga for BRENDAN RODGERS, and make you swagger aboot midgy infested Scotland with yer chests puffed oot?

But come OLDFIRM time integrity was the first victim, sacrificed on the the altar of the ugly, self indulgent, parochial, me me me, Green Hunnery, £49 SAME CLUB / SAME PRICE, OLDFIRM ticket trap.

But BR made all of those burning questions disappear!

So much for being in the fight till the last rebel?

    Awe talk nae troosers brigade.

As for your calling myself a racist for voting for Brexit, I mean what?

The refugees at the border – says who? The BBC?

Have you ever heard of crisis actors?

How many of these ‘refugees’ did you take into your home?

Or were you grandstanding like Krankie?

End imperialism – end refugee crisis.

Mr GEORGE GALLOWAY is the leader of the only party in Britain who’ll end imperialism.

But you put your fingers in your ears and shout “Racist!”

Maybe less coaching from the rebound blog will do you good.

I mean well, one day you’ll get over yourself and say “yon racist guy was right.”

    Take care. ✌

The two games you mention, Nottingham 1983, Dundee at Parkhead 1988, were scary experiences but they had nothing to do with terraces, and everything to do with bad policing letting far too many people inside the ground, properly policed, no issues with terracing.

The Nottingham game police opened up the gates and thousands of freezing, ticket-less fans poured in causing crushes at the front of the terrace.

The 1988 Dundee game was rather difficult to work out who was to blame?

Was it the police letting too many fans enter the ground?

Or was the kind hearted Kelly’s & White’s letting too many youngsters in by being lifted over for free, and making it difficult to work out what the actual crowd was?

Your correct about families being able to attend which is brilliant.

But at what cost? A library atmosphere?

There needs to be areas for families, maybe the Main Stand, North Stand, top decks of Jock Stein and Lisbon Lion’s Stand, with lower JS & LL with ALL seats removed and return of terraces, not rail terrace, but real terrace which would boost capacity, and as always – policed properly.

    Or keep the libraries?

  21. Mild Colonial Bhoy on

Not sure we will be the Club in the entire world to benefit most from VAR to be honest. Plenty other examples of “mistakes” in other venues. The most blatant one to me this term was Aberdeen’s goal V St Johnstone earlier this season where the player used both hands to control the ball before striking it into the net. I don’t think VAR would have made much difference on Sunday as I don’t think it concerns itself with foul tackles in the middle of the park. And for the examples quoted again I doubt VAR would have made any difference. Having viewed the build up to the winning goal a few times it looks onside to me. At the most his hand might have been ahead of the last Celtic defender but as far as I am aware that does not matter anway as you cannot score a goal with your hand. On the other hand (no pun intended!) if VAR had been in play then I am sure Kyogo’s winner V Hearts would have been ruled out. As for the Bobby Hope incident ( which as stated would not be a VAR issue anyway) there was no rule broken anyway. The referee can start the game as long as the players are in their own half. If player over-celebrate and/or don’t take up their correct positions then that is their problem. The issue with that one is whether the official would have done it if it had been Rangers doing the celebrating. No amount of VAR or discussion would ever resolve that.
