VAR will impact Celtic more than any club in world football

247

If there is any club in world football that will benefit from the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, it is Celtic – in my opinion.  Other opinions are possible.  Refereeing is wide open to interpretation by fallible officials and is seldom consistent.

In my football supporting life, countless shoves in the box have been viewed as a penalty, or not.  The 2005 penalty at Tynecastle, when Rangers needed a late goal, springs to mind as quickly as the offside goal Newco ‘scored’ at Hampden on Sunday.  Then there’s the 1993 Douglas Hope decision, to allow Rangers to take kick off while 8 Celtic players were celebrating a goal in front of the Jungle.  Technically not a VAR issue, but a demonstration of what can happen without appropriate supervision.

VAR does not remove mistakes, honest or otherwise, however, it will make them significantly less likely.  When it is introduced to the Scottish Premiership in December, it will change the way we celebrate goals.  At the moment, I often glance at the linesman as a goal celebration starts, to check his flag is pointing in the right direction.  Only then can there be certainty.  From December, we will need to wait, often for several minutes, to find out if a goal has actually been scored.

The biggest impact of VAR will be as a deterrent.  Defenders will learn to stop grabbing shirts inside the box, off the ball incidents should quickly dry up, talent should be allowed to flourish.  Teams that learn this quickly will be first to benefit.

Yesterday’s decision feels momentous for the future of the game in Scotland.

It’s in Celtic Hands to go and clinch the league title nobody else ,starting up in Dingwall on Sunday,a couple on here mentioning the South Stand needing upgraded ,well I can tell them with the present miserable B———s,in the Celtic Board it won’t happen,F—-s since Celtic Park was redeveloped and that wasn’t yesterday)Them Girders and Beams and Structures are all rusty which badly need looked at ,and like myself and many others want the Main Stand upgraded , they can’t even give the whole stadium a lick of paint .

my neighbour took his son over to Manchester last weekend for a birthday treat, including the game at Old Trafford.

He reckons the stadium is a dump and falling apart.

He also said there was nothing in the superstore to buy that his boy didn’t already have from normal shops.

They are mess from top to bottom it seems

I seem to remember we had a ref from Luxembourg during the referees strop.

    ——

    Indeed Jimmy.

And, from memory, the guy strolled through the game?

No fuss, no contention, managed the game, did his job, went home.

Final from me on VAR if I may …

(Was going to say “Last word” then remembered Pablo’s steer !!! ).

Frustrating watching it’s inadequacies in England (there seem to be fewer in European matches?)

    Was that a penalty?

    Was that a red card?

Did that ball cross the line?

    Was he onside?

    There’s your scope …

    How hard can it be?

Rugby Union’s TMO strategy much better than VAR.

    Interactive

    Audible to TV audience.

Ref tells TMO “here is what I am seeing”

Ref asks EVERYONE “Do we agree the facts and the decision?”

  7. The debate on VAR is interesting (better than polilitics)) but pointless. It’s going to happen and I hope it is good for the game in Scotland.

Mibnes aye, mibnes naw – lets see!

There’s probably a Scotch and Wry comedy sketch which could be done on 4 Scottish refs mike’d up on how they make a decision..

Agreed the rugby refereeing is on a different level, excellent.

The problem trying to do a retrospective analysis is that if an ordering off did / didn’t happen or a penalty was / wasn’t given what’s to say the result would have been any different.

  10. what about RAR? – Radio Assistant Referee?

Cheaper and we let the pundits on Radio Scotland decide?😎

that point is made on the site – that it can only be taken with a large dose of salts.

In life generally I am a big fan of serving your time at whatever your job us before stepping up to leadership/ managerial roles. We’ve all seen the damage inexperience can do in the workplace.

Football had it’s own challenges management wise in terms of getting experience. But when you give a guy a job half way into a season you’d think you might have sone longer term plan.

Perhaps he just doesn’t have the presence. Maybe the senior pros were briefing against him. He’s not the most charismatic guy. Shame. Perhaps he is someone suited to helping players with their technique, football knowledge etc.

  13. Football management is a very fickle business. Our fans’ media were pushing for Ralf Rangnick to be our new boss. Yet this guru of gurus hasn’t done much to change the fortunes of Manchester United. We were also encouraged to buy into the director of football model. Yet, we end up with a guy who’s, in some ways, more of an old fashioned do it all model and he’s been brilliant. I’d love to see Ange stay here for a very long time. If we can go some way to matching his ambition, I think he would.
