Victor’s contract offer, Charlotte and Willie

663

I hear from good sources at Celtic Park that despite Victor Wanyama declining to sign a contract extension since October last year, the player is an absolute joy to deal with.  His professionalism is well rooted; there have been no “rolled out of the pub” emails about this guy, nor is there likely to be.

There are usually reasons why a player with the best part of three years left on his contract (as it was) declines a one year extension for dramatically better wages (Victor is on an entry level contract and was offered a top pay deal).  We now know discussions were taking place for a proposed move to QPR last summer.

According to Victor’s agent, Celtic blocked the proposed move, costing the player £1m in wages.  It could be argued that advising Victor to decline Celtic’s new contract offer also cost Victor a substantial sum.

Herein lies the problem.  QPR were paying the kind of money that would make Louis XVI wince.  Staggering sums were paid to players, well beyond their value.  Despite this, those very same players are now readjusting to life as lower-division players.

The irony has escaped Vic’s agent, but the contract value proposed to the player during QPR’s pre-guillotine era made declining Celtic’s offer almost a year ago look like a good idea.  The contract offered by saner-Southampton clearly pales by comparison, which will make the decision to sit on entry-level wages at Celtic for nine months look ridiculous.  Of course people are getting irritated, there are questions to answer about the advice given.

My guess is that the agent needs to pull a big contract offer out of the bag.  Victor is a special talent but Louis XVI-type offers don’t always come along in twos.  If Victor goes, it will be to a club matching Celtic’s valuation and the money will come in handy.  If he stays, Celtic expect to retain their top player for another two years.  No one, and I mean no one, is distressed at this prospect, after all, Celtic sell when they choose to, not because they have to.

So the Daily Record have (for the second time, in case you’ve not been paying attention) dipped their toes into Charlotte waters.  Items “leaked on to the internet, where they are openly available” have been used, without reference to source, and without concern for apparent legal consequence.

As far as I am aware, none of the owners of the material leaked have disputed their authenticity or declined permission for it to be used.  Our media are a huge part of this story, they feature in galling terms in many of the leaked documents.  The cry of legal probity was convenient, but has twice been shown to be nonsense by the Daily Record (who have been highly selective on who to target).

It is a huge story.
There are months of material waiting to be written about.
The Daily Record are doing what many said cannot be done, without consequence.

But, this one does not fit popular narrative, and is likely to cause the kind of schism Mme Guillotine did in 18th century France.  Seek Truth, as someone once said.

Willie Wallace………… what can we say?

Willie came onto CQN last night before leaving for Australia today.  This is a taste of what he said:

“I just wanted to come back onto CQN this evening to say my farewells as myself and Olive head back to Australia tomorrow.  I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to all the Celtic supporters I have met during the past month, at book signing events, in supporters clubs such as Greenock and at the CQN Golf Day.

“Also to everyone at the Lions Roar event last Friday where Bertie stole the show as usual! I came all the way from Australia and I couldn’t get a word in! The 1254125 charity tells you everything you need to know about Celtic supporters.

What is amazing about this Celtic family of ours is that when you live at the other side of the world you still know that this is a special club with wonderful supporters. Then you come back to Scotland and realise you actually under estimated these things because Celtic is even better than you remember and the fans are truly amazing. The best in the world.

“To everyone on CQN can I say a very special thank you. I hoped that the book would go well and we’d sell a few copies but it was never about money – it was about telling my story. I arrived at Winning Captains house and was met by a mountain of books to sign – all ordered by the CQNers. I had to go back another day to finish signing and the mountain was as big as before! I’ve been avoiding him ever since!

To Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan – when I heard his name I thought that would be some round of drinks! He’s been great, helping make Heart of a Lion what it is – a really good Celtic book – and turning up at the CQN events and book signings.

“Thank you the CQN’ers.

“Thanks to the Celtic family and I look forward to our next trip home to Paradise.

“Hail Hail and all the best to each of you and your families.

“Willie Wallace

“Keep the Faith!

“Hail Hail!”

Willie, it has been an utter joy.  Thank you.

Thanks…but you’re dealing with a complete dinosaur here.

If I click on a link the nominated site opens up, where CQN was.

How do I take a link from a poster & open it…but in a different tab?

Do I just copy and paste the link into a new tab?

If so, what’s the point in having a link that is “live”…

  7. Vic’s agents do seem like thee worst.

If a player is being offered improved terms with an extension then (unless you are determined to run down the contract – would have thought far too long a contract for that) then why not take it. If an acceptable offer comes in and the player wants to leave then generally he’d be allowed to… it makes no sense to turn down increased salary.

It reminds me of the time I had my first works published.

‘Twas a fishy tale of a young boy going across the water on his first real holiday and how he was attacked by a winged creature as his ship was half way across the vast watery expanse.

To cut a long story short the young boy in question was a seven year old me sailing from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay.

While feeding the seagulls bread from the top deck of the cruise liner, one of the more gallus birds tried to snatch a piece from my hand, and, in the process, managed to nip my finger.

What a story I thought. (The punchline of the story was that the bird must have thought it was a fish finger. See what I did there?)

I’ll send it to the letters page of the “Sparky”.

Now, anyone else old enough to remember this publication should also recall that a published story earned you TEN BOB

    That’s 50p in “new pence”

Not only that, if your writing was deemed the best out of all the letters sent that week you also received a “state of the art pocket transistor wireless radio”

After writing my effort in “Crayola Crayon” (I was only seven at the time) I blackmailed my older sister into writing it out in her bestest handwriting, (I threatened to tell Mither about her kissing Berty Henderson doon the back close if she didny dae it)and sending it to said “Sparky” to try and win, not only the ten bob, but also the tranny.

About six weeks later I was both delighted and disappointed to receive a ten bob “Postal Order”, (Think it cost about five bob tae cash it in cos a didny hiv a post office savings account, didny tell ye that in the “Sparky” when they said you could win ten bob) but nae tranny.

Turns out when I saw some of my sisters writing I noticed girly things like curly “Ys” and “Gs” and wee flower heads on top of the “i’s” instead of dots and wee pictures of ponies runnin about on the sand. So I think the “Editor” maybe cottoned on that said writing was not a young boys, but in fact a cheeky young boys bigger sisters handwriteng who had somehow managed to blackmail his bigger sister into carrying out this serious and heinous crime of deception. Anyway, I’d now like to take the congratulaions of my fellow posters for probably being the first to have his works published, I mean, I’m talkin nearly 50 years ago noo.

Hooper and Wanyama another season in thCL and they would have their picks of top clubs IMO.

  15. One way to get big Vic to sign is get his bro at Parkhead on loan. Was on loan ta Parma last season and can’t seem him feature much at Inter this season so another loan on the cards.

  16. Is anybody else having a problem or is it simply that I am 24hrs too late? I’ve been on the Celtic site trying to buy a couple of tickets for Stan’s game and it seems to be virtually sold out with only a handful of tickets in the South Stand available. Can that be correct? They only went on sale yesterday afternoon did they not?

  17. Paul67 et al

So, Victor’s agent is using the QPR offer as a template against which to judge offers from both Cardiff and Southampton, and presumably others, well good luck with that. You never know though, maybe Harry Redknapp will come in for him.

Great to hear Willie Wallace had a great time on his visit to Scotland. Celtic make Scotland an altogether better place. Congratulations to all concerned.

  20. itsabouttim

I think that is where the captain would usually come in and give a bit of advice to a young player.

It’s hard in the modern game tho. I suspect that Victor wants a move to a big club in England and his agent may have said look I will be the bad guy here. I will get your name out there and make it known you would like to leave meanwhile if you stay then at least your happy where you are.

The offers/interest have come so far from clubs who will probably fight relegation next year. I suspect Victor would like a CL club or at least a EL club. I reckon he will get his move. The English clubs are probably not even back training yet. If he is patient and keeps working away in training the big clubs will come for him. If not he is at a big club in Scotland and one of the biggest on Europe. The problem we have is no different from most clubs out with England. They can offer obscene amounts of money to players in wages!

WGS. Agents in the main do what the player asks them so if Big Victor tells his agent he fancies a move to the English Premiership where he can earn silly money the agent then casts his net out. The main way for the agent to earn is through a transfer of his/her client and if the club who are making an offer in this case Southampton are not fancied by the player there is a multitude of excuses the player and the agent can use to scupper the deal.In modern day football the player has most of the power if as you say Victor and Gary stay for another season that would be good but I think it is unlikely to happen.I think they will both leave and it is only a matter of time until the right offer comes along.I think the best we can do is get as much as possible for them and use part of the money to bring in further new faces.H.H.
