Virgil is in a different place than Victor and Gary were

709

Virgil van Dijk looks like a level-headed footballer, so I don’t think his game will be upset by his agent’s loose lips.  He has enjoyed a remarkably successful first season at Celtic Park but any attempt by his representatives to create an earner this summer is likely to be inhibited by the three years remaining on his Celtic contract.

There is always a risk of serious injury, but short of that, Virgil’s market value will not diminish in the next 12 months and may even appreciate.  He is in a completely different situation from Victor Wanyama and Gary Hooper, who glided into the last two and one year of their contracts respectively.

It’s a truism of football that those spending a nation’s the mineral wealth on football players tend to get what they want, but it remains to be seen if a handful of Champions League performances are enough to tempt this kind of approach onto the table.  Great player though he promises to be, Virgil’s not been tested at the top level over a prolonged period.

Thanks again for all your support of the Mary’s Meals Malawi school kitchen project ahead of Friday’s CQteN St Patrick’s Day dinner.  You can get involved here.

I was also sorry to hear about Bob Crowe, a decent man who did great work for his union. He’ll be a big loss.

  7. Copies of the new CQN book which is titled SEVILLE – The Celtic Movement have arrived. We have a wee pic of this over on the CQN Magazine Facebook page. It will be on sale at CQTEN and you can also order from the blog now. If contributed to CQN last May or again in January when we were discussing Seville then you are in the book. If you send your Seville photos in to CQN – then these are in the book. And some of you are also in our cartoons. It’s a lovely Celtic book – I hope you like it too.

Jack Irvine’s latest departure from Ibroke is bad news for Bill McMurdo’s boy.

He’ll have to put his name to someone else’s press releases. Providing they want to use him, of course.

I’m sure the Daily Mail will have a field day tomorrow. But that’s only to be expected. They’ll no doubt run groundless tales of London coming to a standstill on the day of his funeral, which they may even attend to ‘doorstep’ grieving mourners.

The Mail taking the moral high ground on any matter always amuses me.

  18. I realise this is beginning to look like something of an obsession but I still have not seen anything OFFICIAL concerning Nir Biton`s injury. Has anyone or are we all repeating the same rumours?

  19. Re Virgil. I noticed in our last Home game how the often maligned Efe Ambrose both covered for Virgil and guided the young Dutchman positionally throughout the game.

Good luck to our young Reserves tonight against Hibernian especially Eoghan O’Connell, Marcus Fraser and Liam Henderson.

Often it’s injuries and/or suspensions to established players which open a route to the first eleven.

Also, I’d like two or three of the Under20’s to experience a tough away game in the big team before playing at the Bear-pit under lights on 31st March.

Re Virgil…..if we accept less than £15m in the summer

then we have totally no ambition….time to play hard ball

    with the cash laden EPL.

  23. McCoist claims there is a misunderstanding about the deid team. No, there’s no. There has been unprecedented spin lying about them, which their follow followers have lapped up. The truth has always been out there; they chose to ignore it.

Big Virgil won’t leave in the summer….next year mibbe….spoke to two Dutch scouts from the national team who thought he was two or three years away from being able to move to a top club and he has been advised to cement his place with us…plus him and his girlfriend love it in Glasgow.

    Fraser…now that’s a different thing altogether…

Leigh Griffiths thus far is certainly making a mockery of his critics.

Recents comments from him would suggest an intelligence and insight into the game that would surprise some. He also knows the clugger Scottish football from the inside out and unlikely to be surprised by the hammer throwers.

And he has that necessary gallus, hungry quality that successful strikers have in barrow loads. Just take a look at his Twitter avatar in his Hoops top celebrating in front of the mini-huns, it’s worth it for a chuckle.
