Virgil’s suitors

2079

Aye, sure, Dick Advocaat would like to sign Virgil van Dijk for Sunderland.  Of course he would, but Virgil is very unlikely to go to Sunderland for a host of reasons.  Many clubs have made inquiries about Virgil but the player has an understanding with the club.

For a start, he’s going nowhere until after the Champions League qualifiers are over with, and even then, player and club have agreed that only approaches from tier-one clubs will be considered.  No disrespect intended for Sunderland, but a haul of one cup in 79 years leaves them well off the pace.

The prospect of Celtic being interested in Steven Fletcher, as reported in The Herald this morning, is unlikely to make any difference.  If Fletcher is wanted it will be for the qualifiers, there will be no quid pro quo.

Virgil has two years left on his contract and there’s little prospect of him extending his stay in Scotland, so if Celtic decide to listen to offers in late August it’ll do no harm having as many English clubs as possible bidding portions of their TV bounty for the player.  So let Sunderland bid away.

You and I have been working on the whole Mary’s Meals project for a couple of years now.  It’s not a big part of any of our lives, but what we’ve done is a big part in the lives of thousands of kids we’ll never know.

Reaching the 1 million kids fed each day figure last month has reinvigorated the charity.  It’s a worldwide phenomenon but incredibly started here in Scotland.

At midnight tonight a couple of guys will start to walk the West Highland Way, 96 miles, a 17 thousand feet ascent.  They hope to complete the journey within 24 hours.

You and I know that not every journey is completed on time, some, sadly, will never be completed……… but these two are close to hitting their £6k target figure for Mary’s Meals before they set off.  Go and give them a a couple of pounds, help drive them on to complete the task.  Every £1 you give will feed a child for a month.  A month!  Tell me you’re going to do something better today and I’ll not believe you.

Checked the forecast for my golf tomorrow then had a look at Glasgow City to see what the bigot fest could expect.

Forecast is excellent. Heavy rain all day with wind gusting to over 40mph. They better have better tents than the one used for the hun agm.

  2. Ah Dick Advocaat…

If you believe the SMSM, then his decision to stay at Sunderland ruled him out of the ‘running’ to be the next Sevco manager.

Aye. Like he was ever in the running in the first place!

The media continues to embarrass itself with completely evidence-free ‘stories’ about the strong list of ‘candidates’ to succeed McCall.

Here are some mocking thoughts on the circus!

  3. Winning Captains,

I see you might be on at the moment – quick question…

as the CQN mag editor, do you know of any reason why John Clark has never had a book published about his career / life?

I’m fairly sure he is the only Lion who has not had one – Jinky, Ceasar & Tommy Gemmell have had at least 3 each.

JC has been at the club for so long, he must have a book in him?

The only other past player (still living) who I can think of that is held in equally high esteem and who also hasn’t had a book is Paul McStay

    Any thoughts?

from the previous thread, the pizzeria in Muswell Hill is La Porchetta, the original one. A really great place, last visited last spring , to my knowledge still going strong although it may not be hipster enough for all the new “locals” in Muswell Hill.

  9. Why would Virgil not go to Sunderland?

Vic 67 went to Southampton and he was better than Virgil…imho.

Who do folk measure Virgil against…Vic 67 kicked ass in the CL.

    Fletcher…..better wi Adam Rooney.

Bring back the Jungle….Orange Walk…who cares?

  10. Gary 67

If Virgil isn’t committed for the full season he should be sold ASAP and a replacement brought in prior to the qualifiers. A player who has it in his head that he will be leaving at the end of August won’t be 100% committed in qualifiers.

On the contrary, he’s likely to be even more motivated if it will impact on a big move….

VVD wouldn’t sign for the Black Cats unless he’s crazy, and Stephen (Lamborghini) Fletcher is off the radar. We’ve enough transplants to be getting on with.

    Winning Captains.

    Using iPad.

I get a problem when trying to read articles on CGN Magazine which reach me via Facebook. I click on the link, the article loads and as I start to read, BOOM, the app closes.

I tried using Open In Safari as it loaded. Again the page starts to load then the page goes blank and an error message appears saying

An error occurred with page so it was reloaded.

The page does indeed reload, then goes blank, then reloads ad infinitum.

(Curiously, it also cause me to be logged out of the blog which I have open in a different tab, causing me to retype this when I went back to get the exact wording of the error)

    ———

    On the IPAD…

I tried to read the Guidetti article that WINNING CAPTAINS provided a link for.

I opened it in a new tab and had the same problem as described above. I copied the link and opened it in Opera. Again the page loaded but after 20 secs the app closed.

No problem with the blog for me, just the magazine.

John hasn’t written a book yet as he is still at the club. When Willie Wallace was over promoting Heart of a Lion he encouraged John to speak to CQN about it and he said he would when the time was right.

Celtic may decide to do it themselves as the big anniversary approaches in 2017.

  15. Kev J

Agree 100% re Fletcher and Adam Rooney.

Virgil hasn’t yet proven himself in Europe but he looks better than many centre backs currently changing clubs in EPL lala land for £20m +.

Not sure why that is happening. It isn’t happening here on Mac, iPad or iPhone. What device are you using? I will try to sort.

Supersutton can you try gong to http://www.cqnmagazine.com on your iPad and let me know if the problem remains?

  19. harrym @ 13:08,

Gary 67 – while I’ve agreed with your sentiment in the past, if we can come to an agreement with a key player I say we should keep them for the qualifiers.

As HarryM says they need to perform to confirm the big move plus we can put them on a qualification bonus.

UCL qualification constitutes what? A third of our T/O.

We can be generous with a bonus and ensure the player(s) are motivated, in more ways than one.

    Hail Hail

    Hi fella – Hail Hail

Yeah, Rooney looks a guid yin to me.

Virgil is absolute class….he’s as good as what’s going about in the EPL but, he’ll need to work his way up the league I think….if he goes….he must always be welcomed ack as a friend.

  24. Would’ve been keen to take Fletcher 6 years ago.

But now he’s a classic EPL dickhead footballer spoiled by the money – more interested in posing with his new Ferraris than putting the effort into his game.

We want hunger and desire to improve and win.

  25. Paul67 or anyone

When will the draw be made for our qualifying game ?

May get to it but would need to be on the ball with flights etc.

I only have the problem described when using my lappy.

At work, internal settings take care of it. Otherwise iPad and iPhone override it.

Point is,there have been a significant number of posts about this for months now. Most,it seems, from those using a lappy. Their concerns have not been addressed.

Hopefully now you are definitely aware of them, you can do something about those concerns.

    Cheers and,
