Virgil’s suitors

2079

Aye, sure, Dick Advocaat would like to sign Virgil van Dijk for Sunderland.  Of course he would, but Virgil is very unlikely to go to Sunderland for a host of reasons.  Many clubs have made inquiries about Virgil but the player has an understanding with the club.

For a start, he’s going nowhere until after the Champions League qualifiers are over with, and even then, player and club have agreed that only approaches from tier-one clubs will be considered.  No disrespect intended for Sunderland, but a haul of one cup in 79 years leaves them well off the pace.

The prospect of Celtic being interested in Steven Fletcher, as reported in The Herald this morning, is unlikely to make any difference.  If Fletcher is wanted it will be for the qualifiers, there will be no quid pro quo.

Virgil has two years left on his contract and there’s little prospect of him extending his stay in Scotland, so if Celtic decide to listen to offers in late August it’ll do no harm having as many English clubs as possible bidding portions of their TV bounty for the player.  So let Sunderland bid away.

You and I have been working on the whole Mary’s Meals project for a couple of years now.  It’s not a big part of any of our lives, but what we’ve done is a big part in the lives of thousands of kids we’ll never know.

Reaching the 1 million kids fed each day figure last month has reinvigorated the charity.  It’s a worldwide phenomenon but incredibly started here in Scotland.

At midnight tonight a couple of guys will start to walk the West Highland Way, 96 miles, a 17 thousand feet ascent.  They hope to complete the journey within 24 hours.

You and I know that not every journey is completed on time, some, sadly, will never be completed……… but these two are close to hitting their £6k target figure for Mary’s Meals before they set off.  Go and give them a a couple of pounds, help drive them on to complete the task.  Every £1 you give will feed a child for a month.  A month!  Tell me you’re going to do something better today and I’ll not believe you.

I would have Aiden McGeady back at Celtic park in a heartbeat, loved his comment about the “tartan army” and the would have booed wee McCarthy as much as him, aye right Aiden, he called them out for booing him because where he plied his trade, why is never mentioned that Scotland never approached/rejected Aiden in his early years, don’t really care about any international football but as I wrote would have Aiden back if possible

  4. Don’t deserve to beat anyone after that vote.

What an affront to the eucharist.

  5. Who’s going to be the first to say that the safe standing petition is just a way to get at the Labour Party/SNP/SFA/OO/PL/Saudi Arabia etc etc etc? :-)

Had the unhappy experience of a first visit tothe new Southern General last night (this morning).

    4am, deserted.

Endlessly long corridors. Blue shifted LED light. Clinically clean. Completely silent.

Would also have Aiden back. Looks like he is carrying some extra weight . Ronny would soon sort that out.

Work beckons for this bhoy. Not often I get a chance to chat live but still try to read as many posts as I can even if it’s hours behind.

Gerry good luck in your new job.

Gerry, if Aiden returns, I would prefer if he played in a central position.

When he was played in a central/roving position against the now defunct club in the 2009 League Cup Final, in my opinion, was his best performance for us.

I couldn’t understand why Gordon never played him in a central position after that game.

Would rather have a fit Paddy back. (Is that an oxymoron?)

At least there was more end product with Paddy, instead of all the fancy- dan nonsense from Aidan. Ask any Evertonian and they will tell you how frustrating it is to watch Aidan.

Having said all that, MON seems to get more out of him in terms of his overall game.

Aiden was unplayable that day, like you I would give him the cheating role (No.10) just behind whoever our No.9 will be, can’t believe why we never played Aiden in that role after the Darren O’Dea final

  18. Tictaewin

Agree with your comment re a safe standing area. It would definitley help our match day experience and cater for those who prefer to stand.

Not sure I agree that it’s ‘disgraceful’ & ‘unnacceptable’ that we’ve got restricted view seats. Definitley prefer not to have them, yeah. I’m friendly with someone who worked with Miller who built the North Stand, and the steelwork cost alone to prevent the restricted view seats was multiple £ millions. Plus the vast majority of our seats have great views.

Much as I loved Paddy-a magician wi the ball at his feet-I don’t recall his distribution being that great.

  21. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

I like Gordon Strachan a lot, but as you say, he should have played Aiden in a more central position in the league games following the League Cup final.

It may have helped us win the league that season.
