Volume and variety from Hyunjun and Liel

145

Still 21-years-old, Liel Abada is the same age Jota was when Benfica sent him out on a season long loan to Valladolid.  The insanely valuable talents of Jota were not evident at his mother club and remained hidden for his duration in Spain.

Kyogo was 23 before he played top-flight football in Japan, also as a winger.  His prodigious talents took years longer to mature into the goal scorer he is today.  This is what successful player development often looks like and it is why Brendan Rodgers persuaded Liel Abada to get his head down for another season at Celtic.

Like Kyogo, Liel has an innate understanding of space and timing in front of goal.  He is also a big game player, having scored three times against Newco in his two seasons here, only Dundee United have conceded more to him, including a memorable last-minute winner with 10-men, and, of course, a Scottish Cup Final goal.

He has played through the middle on a couple of occasion without success but I think he has what it takes to make it as a striker, all he needs is time to learn the position and good coaching.

Joining him for competition on the wing will be Korean Hyunjun Yang, also 21, whose signing from Gangwon was confirmed this morning.  Hyunjun leaves a team who were fighting relegation all season, which is quite a different prospect from what he will experience at Celtic.

The developmental opportunities for wing players at Celtic have been one of the highlights at the club in recent years.  As we discussed last week, wingers are changed during a game more often than any other position, we need volume and variety in the squad.

Welcome to Celtic, Hyunjun.

I don’t expect anyone to get the answer, even with GOOGLE. I only know because I was on the committee of the other football team and was at the match.

  5. RON BACARDI @ 8:05 PM,

    Miles out, sorry.

Maybe concentrate on Ron Atkinson and Brendan Rodgers link to the club whose ground it was.

  7. Surprised any player is signing for us,being forced to play in those terrible strips.

  9. Turkeybhoy,

By fu@k you’re right. Some of the strips I’ve seen in Antalia are truely terrible

    HH.

  10. I really like it.Stands out much more.Soon as it arrives here in the ,ahem, markets,I am lashing out the 15 quid on one.Prices have shot up.

  11. Greenpinta,

    That’s Antalya.Shop here does the best.No difference.

    Upmarket here,you see,sniff.

  12. So Genk or Servette will have played 4 competitive games before they play the Huns.

Neither team are changing much vs prior year.

A totally new rangers team are being assembled and will have played just one competitive game on plastic at kilmarnock.

What could possibly go wrong ? This tie alone is worth £7m to them. £5m from uefa and £2m gate money which they would lose out on if they fail to get through and have no play off match.

This is the worst draw they could have got.

  13. Greenpinta,

In Thailand a good few years ago,and they had a pile of strips with the Celtic badges on,Nakamura’s on the back, the lot.

With blue and white hoops !!!!!!.Seriously.

  14. From Wiki entry for Witney Town FC –

In 1979 Trevor Francis made his first appearance for his new club in a testimonial held at Witney Town’s ground

  18. Name of ground was Marriot’s Close, subsequently became site of a supermarket.

Ron Atkinson had once coached them, and Brendan Rodgers spent a few months on loan to them.
