Warning signs observed, creative issue lies ahead

640

What warning signs there were, were observed. Last season Qarabag beat Salzburg (who then won at Celtic Park), drew home and away with Twente and Saint Etienne, drew at home with Inter, and beat Europa League finalists, Dnipro. Remotely disrespect their challenge, and you’d leave Baku empty handed.

I think we would be over-generous to either team to make too much of the chances on show. James Forrest had the goal at his mercy, before choosing to make a pass, which, if it got through the immediate defender, would have found a heavily marked Leigh Griffiths, but shots from distance don’t count.  This was a game without real chances.  It also provided some evidence that James Forrest’s confidence is not where it once was.

The defence scarcely put a foot out of place but the performance of Stefan Johansen and Scott Brown was pivotal to the outcome. Johansen disrupted Qarabeg high up the field, showing incredible energy levels in that heat. Scott Brown held a deeper position throughout and got himself in the way of Qarabag repeatedly.

We had nothing going forward. Gary Mackay-Steven was put on his bum a few times early on and looked to be suffering heat-exhaustion more than anyone else. Nadir Ciftci was isolated, again, but the hoped-for link play didn’t materialise. He needs a link player. That’s a problem for another day. Between now and then, you and I have a Champions League play-off draw to worry about.  Once we know our fate we can worry about being more creative.

It was an absolute treat again to see the Celtic FC Foundation logo, this time on the first choice jersey.  Magners could have put their bottled water brand there instead, but they get what this relationship with Celtic is all about.  The help they’ve given our Mary’s Meals, school kitchen appeal is further evidence of this.

Our competition where you can win a Celtic third choice (bumblebee) top, courtesy of Mangers, closes at 14:00 THIS AFTERNOON.  To enter, email celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the country Mary’s Meals have built four CQN school kitchens in the subject line of your message.

If you can cope with the excitement of also sending a £1 or £2 to the appeal while entering, you can do so here.  Thank you.

To balance out your point about the away goals, playing the second leg at home means that, in the event of extra-time being required, you get that extra 30 minutes on your own pitch, so 2 of the 3.5 hours have been at home.

Those extra 30 minutes put a big demand on energy levels, and players often talk of the fans giving them exactly that when the stakes are high.

And what better crowd than a CL Celtic Park one to do this?

Winning Captains on this picture next to moniker any chance I can have a legend in the making Broony, some people will realise how good Scott Brown is when he is long since stopped playing

Anybody in the draw today just delighted to be in the hat

  6. Bring on the …. whoever. I really don’t mind. We have enough to reach the group stages.

I see the seedlings for the groups has been changed so that actual champions are in pit one rather than the 8 with the highest coefficient. Wonder why they didn’t follow this through …

Agree about CG. He is the best keeper we’ve had in my days of following Celtic (didn’t really see enough of Ronnie Simpson to judge). Some people said that the save on Wednesday was one he would have expected to make. I don’t know – the spring he got in his leap was exceptional. He is better than Forster or Boruc.

Mind you, MON would have given his eye teeth to have one of those 3 during his time or the current David Marshall. Seville would have been a win and we’d have got a couple of last 16 CL berths as well.

  8. For all of you coming on and finding out about the picture beside your moniker idea, I’ve already requested Jock Stein, so think again!

Though I don’t mind sharing, of course!

MON did have some occasional blind spots . Why didnt we get a class keeper to round off that superb team?

I also remember him doing his TV pundit and saying that Frank Ribery was rubbish. This was a little before Ribery went on to be recognised as one of the best attackers in world football . I’d seen him play in a youth tournament for France and he stood out even then as future world-class. He also inexplicably rejected La Pena who was on trial and would have been a sensation had he signed.

Can I have a photie of Dunky McKay,for me, the first of a long line of attacking full-backs who played in the Celtic Way.

Most of us thought that when Celtic signed Hedman in 2003, we had at last a world class keeper.

Probably, up there with Gravesen as bad signings in recent years, though.

    Totally agree with you.

Can u imagine Martin’s team with a Boruc or a Gordon or Forster in goal?

However, my recollection on De La Pena is that Martin wanted to trial him as he had a long spell of injury.

De La Pena took the huff at that thinking that a trial was beneath him .

  14. Difficult decision, the aul avitar…

How do you have a Lubo over a Henke or a Kenny over a Jinky, then there is of course Cesear.

I’ve a picture of the young Barrow chested Jimmy McGrory now that would be good or even that classic with the homburg.

But if push came to shove, I’d like to see the chap that inspired my Mum’s pet name for me – Stevie Chalmers, a Lion and a Legend.
